We wish to dedicate this space to thank our parents and faculty members who have en- couraged us to go through school and finish our education. We hope, as the years pass when you will look through this Annual, you will remember the persons and places and events that made the days when l was in school so memorable. We hope that this book will give an inspiration for the classes in the future to do a better job than the year before. Our school aims not only to teach books but also to teach how to live and get along with everyone. We hope that these aims will be fulfilled in our lives after we leave PATOKA HIGH SCHOOL. 4 enfofc 61444 Q E y . Q . iz .54 V I ' 1 r a v-V we V 6 3 ',hL '. X ' xx ff David B. JOl'1nso'1 if Van T. As freshmen, we had sixteen members in our class: Donald Sloan, Charles Stuckey, Bruce Johnson, Lawrence Hulfachor, Joe Hedge, Ruth Junod, Lou Ann Myrick, Mary Ann Hulfachor, Barbara Schmitz, Paul Stone, Van Gehl, Larry Hartley, Carl Knight, McLove Priestly, Johnny Sloan, and Mettie Foster. This year we had Miss Dulcie Rachels as our sponsor. Barbara Schmitz was our attendant to the basket- ball queen. We entered our sophomore year with a very unusual situation. Four of the girls who had been in our class left, leaving one girl in the class, Loui Ann Myrick. Those who left were Ruth Junod who moved to Vincennes, Barbara Schmitz who was attending the A. I. C. at Ferdinand, Indiana, Mettie Foster who moved to New Albany, and Mary Ann Hulfachor, now Mrs. James Smith. 'We were very thrilled when we ordered our class jackets and graduation rings during the year. Mr. Herman Sollman was our sponsor. Lou Ann Myrick was our attendant to the basketball queen. Bruce Johnson made the varsity basketball team this year. We started our junior year eagerly awaiting the much talked about thrills of junior and senior life. We received our jackets and rings the first part of the year and were very proud to show them off to the other classes. We had a lot of fun giving our play entitled The Antics of Andrew, which was a big success. We gave the junior and senior reception, in honor of the seniors, at the Princeton Country Club. This was a night enjoyed by all and one we'll never forget. We went with the seniors on the annual class trip to St. Louis, Missouri. There we saw many interesting sights: Shaw's Gardens, Jefferson Memorial, and the art museum. But most exciting was the ball game at Busch Stadium. Joe Hedge left us during this year. We were glad to have Mr. Sollman as our class sponsor again in our junior year. Lou Ann Myrick was again attendant to the basketball queen. The junior girl with the help of the two senior girls enjoyed popping pop corn for the ball games. This year we had four boys from our class on the varsity. This year we entered our last year of high school, some anxious to be out and some dreading the last few months of school. We now have eleven members of our class, ten boys and one girl. In September we published the first edition of our paper, The Wrens' Tales. Mrs. Gieseke is our sponsor this year. There has been much excitement making the many preparations for graduation . We are very proud to have all seniors on the first five men in basketball: Bruce Johnson, Van Gehl, Donald Sloan, Paul Stone, and Lawrence Hulfachor. Also, we are very proud of the team's fine record in season play as well as the sectional. Lou Ann Myrick was the basketball queen of 1954-55. Our Baccalaureate was April 24, 1955 and our Commencement was April 25, 1955. Those who have been with us from grades 1-12 inclusive are Donald Sloan, Bruce Johnson, Van Gehl, Paul Stone, Charles Stuckey, Carl Knight, Larry Hartley, Lawrence Hulfachor, and Lou Ann Myrick. Third Grade Teacher - Mrs. Carmen Myrick Fourth Grade Teacher - Mrs. Mariella Hull. 8 ptolaiecy I, McLove Priestly, a mechanic, and proud owner ofa large garage in Cleveland, Ohio, was lazily browsing around the city of New York. I dropped into a restaurant for a bite to eat. Who do you suppose came to take my order? My old classmate, Lou Ann Myrick. I asked her if she was married yet, and she said, No. B ut she had plans to meet her boy friend, Bob Bruce, at the airport t he following week, in her new Oldsmobile. They planned to be married then and to live in New York. When I left the restaurant, I bumped into Johnny Sloan. He was driving a yellow Cadillac convertible. He had married a rich woman from California, and then moved to New York. I walked down the street about two blocks when I saw o young, well-dressed man looking at some children's clothes. I went into the store, and to my surprise, I saw Lawrence Hulfachor, who was a minister and head ofa large church located in New York. He was married and had three lovely children. I headed straight for the airport as Ihada one-way ticket to Los Angeles, California. When I arrived at the airport and started to have my baggage weighed, I found Larry Hartley working as a baggage clerk. He was not married, but was engaged. As I started to board the plane, I saw the pilots standing near by One of them was my old friend, Carl Knight, who was married and the father of five darling children. It was time for the plane to leave, so I did not have much time to visit with him. When I arrived in Los Angeles, my tooth which had been aching, gave me an opportunity to search for a dentist's office. I found one which had a few minutes vacancy, so I was surprised to see Bruce Johnson and Van Gehl as dental partners. Bruce was married and has two brilliant children. Van was married and had a son iust like dad, and a daughter iust like Diane. After leaving the dentist's office, I noted an engineering plant near by, so I decided to go through it. As a guide started to take me through the factory, I saw Donald Sloan as the chief engineer. Donald was married and had four children. Two sons and two daughters, who were the very image of their parents. I stayed at a hotel in California that night, and after breakfast, I decided to rake to the air again. After a few hours, I arrived at Austin, Texas . I rented a car from the drive-yourself lot. I iust drove around town leisurely for a while. As I was leaving town to go to the country, I had a flat tire near a large garage. I drove into the garage to have it changed. It was Paul Daniel Stone who owned and operated this fine garage. As the tire was being changed, we chatted about our dear old high school days in Indiana. Paul had iust been on his honeymoon trip to South America.. He had married a beautiful and wealthy oil heiress from Texas. After my tire was changed, I started on my iourney again. As I was driving through the country, I saw a large, beautiful ranch, so I stopped to take some pictures After taking a few pictures, I was very thirsty, so I went to the ranch house to ask for a drink. When I knocked on the door, Dr. Charles Stuckey answered. He owned the ranch, and he was also a doctor, married and the appreciative father of two fine sons and a pretty red-headed daughter. As we were talk- ing, the phone rang. Charles answered it and came back in a hurry. Sorry Mac, he said, I have to hurry. What's wrong, I replied. Mrs. Jones is being rushed to the hospital for those twins they are expecting, and demand my attention, he said. This was a wonderful vacation for me. The Wrens outplayed and outclassed every team in the sectional. They drew Owensville in the first game. They had to beat them in a thrilling overtime 49 to 47. By doing this they met Oakland City in the Semi Finals on Saturday afternoon. They wasted no time by beating them to a standstill 67 to 51. They then met Princeton in the final game in which they outclassed and outplayed the Tigers. The final score was Patoka 60 and Princeton 50. This is our first sectional and we hope many more will follow in the years to come. By winning the sectional we advanced to the regional at Central Gym in Evansville. The four teams included Patoka vs. Newburgh and Tell City vs. Reitz. We had beaten Newburgh during the season by a 'score of 52 - 41. But the Newburgh team showed much improvement in the regional as they beat us 70 to 58. The Newburgh team was hitting and playing better ball while we were not hitting and have played better ball. The regional was won by Reitz 57 to Newburgh 52. This was the last game for the five seniors who are as follows: Bruce Johnson, Donald Sloan, Lawrence Hulfachor, Paul Stone, and Van Gehl . We are proud of the boys, of their fine and outstanding play, and showings over the year. They left the high school with its best record ever as they won 21 and lost only 3. The team also lost their one and only student manager, a senior, Larry Hartley. We wish the team and coach,Mr. Sollman, more luck next year. Date Nov. Nov Nov Nov Nov Dec.' Dec. Dec. Dec. Dec. Dec. A -- wif, 4--omni W5 PATOKA BASKETBALL QUEEN The Patoka High School gym was transformed into an ice and snow scene, forming the setting for the crowning of the I954-55 basketball queen, Lou Ann Myrick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Myrick. The ceremony was held February 4 between the first and second games. Leading the procession were first graders Sherry White and Iris Lynch dressed as skaters, followed by Lynita Hartley and Michael Hartley dressed as cheerleaders. Miss Sharon-Jane McCallister, freshman attendant to the queen wearing a light blue ballerina length formal5Miss Marilyn Sloan, sophomore, in an aqua ballerina gown, and Miss Betty Byrns, iunior attendant, wearing an azure blue ballerina gown, formed an escort at the center of the floor. They all wore wrist corsages of red carnations. - Miss Judy Johnson, the maid of honor, was dressed in a pink ballerina length formal. She was met by Paul Stone, co-captain, and was escorted to her place in the center of the floor. She wore a white carnation corsage . Victoria Meeks, crown bearer, wore a white floor length formal, and the basketball carrier, David Hartley, wore a white suit. Little Ellen and Helen Dix dressed identically in red nylon floor length gowns, carried white snowball baskets scattering snow in the pathway of the queen. The queen, lovely in a white nylonfnet, ballerina length gown, carried a colonial bouquet of red carnations tied with red and white streamers. Her gown was fashioned with strapless fitted bodice topped with tiny ruffles. The bouffant skirt was encircled with rows of ruffling enhanced with satin trim. She wore silver slippers and a rhinestone necklace. She was escorted to the room by Bruce Johnson, captain of the team. Captain Johnson , with words befitting a queen and the traditional kiss, placed the crown upon her head and she, in turn, presented him with the basketball, wishing the team every success during the remainder of the year. The beautiful organ music played during the ceremony was by Mrs. Lucille Perlow of Princeton. CHOIR The choir members are from the six upper grades. We sang carols for the church at Christmas and participated in the musical programs at the close of school. Mrs. Gieseke is happy we can wear our robes on such occasions. PLAY The Antics of Andrew This play was given by our class in October, l955. Since we had only one girl in our class, the two senior girls and one sophomore girl helped us give it. The play was a great success. The cast was as follows. Petunia McLove Priestly Andrew Browne Donald Sloan Jacques Charles Stuckey Willie Waldo Harold Hadley Althea Thorne Julia Boynton Betty Boynton Dean Socrates Boynton Issac Zimmerman Miss Prunella Thorne O'Flarity Royle Reverend Doolittle Director Paul Stone Van Gehl Lou Ann Myrick Judy Black Judy Johnson Lawrence Hulfachor Bruce Johnson Corellen Armstrong Joe Hedge Larry Hartley Carl Knight Mrs. Ethel Corn Gieseke H wHQli?E?,SrHfl Presenting the cuom 1 ! 5 i 1 ITV 1,1 .
