TENNIS Supervised by Mr. Jacob Weber, the tennis team did its part to uphold the high standards of Eastside's athletic squads by winning eleven matches while losing only three. In conference competition the racqueteers were unbeaten, easily winning the title by trampling each opponent. Clifton and Garfield were each crushed twice while Central went to defeat once. The courtmen earned victories over the New York Military Academy and Englewood, split even in two matches with Montclair and relinquished its other defeat to Barringer. The racqueteers opened their season opposing Tenafly, and before they could get started, they were nipped in the bud 3 to 2. Regaining their stride in the next meet, they overcame Montclair by the same score, 3 to 2. This commenced a long string of victories, numbering eight, seven over Conference opponents and another over Kearny. The team hit a stone wall and sustained its first loss in nine meets when it was outvolleyed by Barringer 4 to 1. A week later Montclair turned in a 4 to 1 victory over the 'KGhosts. The mainstay of the team was the top seeded Sid Brown. Other performers were Hugh Sloan, August Katterman, George Cohn and Bob Rose.

Winning its ninth consecutive meet in dual competition by vanquishing Rutherford, the 1941 harriers completed their first undefeated season in the school's history. The Goldberg coached team also captured the Passaic Val- ley championship for the third straight year, crossing the Hnish line ahead of Passaic, Clifton, Rutherford and East Rutherford. This was the Hrst year that the cinder-men entered the State Championship competition and they did well in fin- ishing fifth, behind Trenton, Thomas Jefferson, Union and Dover, in that order. Opening its season on October 9, the Ghosts defeated Clifton by the shutout route, 15 to 40. Then came suc- cessive victories over Rutherford and Clifton again. The COACH IOE GOLDBERG hill-and-dalers resumed action against Lodi on October 29, conquering them 10 to 36. Within a space of six days from November 5 to November 10 the harriers rang up three wins, trouncing East Rutherford, Passaic and Rutherford. Already having beaten Lodi the second time, the Ghosts,, finished their most sensational season. Lettermen include six seniors who will graduate Eastside before next season. Among these six are Jack Mial and Bill Kirkham, co-captains of the team. Kirkham and Ray Chiappelli provided the teams one-two punch throughout the season, dividing their glory equally throughout the season. CROSS COUNTRY
