CLASS POEM THINGS REMEMBERED Itis the little things, The little things best remembered . . . The way the sky looks a hard, bright blue on a frisky morning And the flag etched sharp and clear against it, The field melting into heaven until The bold red stripes are a separate entity in themselves. And that first amazed flop on the ice at the gate And I-Iasn,t this walk been cleaned off yet?', And the snaky lines of the fire drill . . . The way you can,t get upstairs after lunch And the pained surprise when a test is sprung And the perpetual squawks about one thing or another. The awful humiliation of being caught with your homework not done The first time this term QIt,s always the first timej. The shiver of joy when there's no eighth period Or second . . . or third . . . as the case may be. The throb of excitement at a football game With the color and enthusiasm of the band and the Mr. Tompkins's light spring up to the platform And the thunder and lightning of honest applause cheerleaders And the days you find out your teachers are human. For all these things-but mostly because youire you The big, alive, colorful you- Eastside, I'll remember.
