Haskstba!! Season kssvundiug Success Varsity Basketball had one of its best seasons ever this year. With eight returning lettennen, though none taller than 6 ft. 2 in. , the team provided a wealth of experience for its new coach. Because of the obvious height disadvantage the team had to make up for this with a tight man-to-man defense and full court press. Defense was so stressed that the offense was considered a month behind at the opening ofthe season. Highlights of the pre-season were resounding Jerry Tardie, Coach victories over Camino Real rivals Crespi, St. Monica 's, Murphy, and Angelus champion Cantwell. The Golden Eagles were shut out of the Amat-Bassett Tournament but rebounded with a second place finish in the Monica 's Tournament. The Eagles created a five straight win streak in league play, including St. Francis's first loss in league before falling to eventual champion Alemany. The last game of the first round against La Salle saw many school records fall. The final total of 106, combined scores of both teams. 64 points in the second half, 36 pts. in the third quarter, and an individual record of 37 pts. by Sherick all were records. The second round was fatal for the Eagles as they lost three games- Mission, St. Francis, and again Alemany. These tl1ree losses eliminated us from a playoff bid for C. l. F. and placed the Eagles in third place with a 10-4 record. A special thanks must be paid to both students and parents for their tremendous support of the team, including the first turnaway crowds in the schoo1's history. Those in attendance at the games saw Eagle basketball at its best.
