I f l WE, the Graduates of l9-47, dedicate this book to PERMANENT PEACE, a peace established on the foundation of mutual love and understanding among nations. We firmly believe that our prayers and efforts, added to those of students all over the world, will even- tually bring the realization of our dream, a world where men will live together as brothers, in peace and harmony. REBA E. EATON DERNJTH P.. CLARK xtlllfitlli-lf Schools A large percent of your predecessors of ' the past few years, graduates of high schools throughout the nation, have been actively engaged in a devastating world war against aggression and inhumanity. Their sacrificial efforts have contributed to providing the peoples of the world one more chance to organize for international cooperation and peace. This chance, which may be civiliza- tion's last, in light of the potentials of atomic energy, is an important part of our heritage. What will you and the rest of us make of this rich heritage-of our chance for peace and world cooperation? What will we do to use it intelligently, to add to and improve it, to preserve it for posterity? We are no longer children with little responsibility, we are now adults with grave responsibilities for our every per- sonal and corporate act. CLARK W. MCDERMITH REBA E. EATON 10 Vice-Principal RATIUN TO THE SENIORS: It is gratifying to me to see such an excellent publication as the 1947 edition of the Echo . l know what patient and careful effort the com- mittee and advisers have made. Last Will ul the Januarg '47 Class I strolled along the darkened halls of Passaic High School, the haunting strains of a sousaphone hitting me in the face. As I was about to kick a piece of paper under the lockers, my curiosity got the better of me and I picked it up. It was a scrap paper copy of the Last Will and Testament of the 4-2 class. Here, let me show it to you: the Sophomore Class we leave the culture and traditions of our g h 41 1 N illustrious school, gasbills, trips to the Sweet Shop , to the Annex. ,A N, 125 ' , ,533-.assi l .nf ' .. fi jug' f D . , ty ' V double seats in all classrooms. As we gaze into the crystal ball, we find that Termites' Paradise lthe Annex to other peoplel has been devoured, and in its stead stands a magnificent 1 new school. A KJ' ,144 Qc: g if S graduates of Passaic High School, we rely on a crystal ball Q A W ' ' W' A fS Continuing our tour of the new building, we come to the guidance office. Ah, yes, there are Marvin Alperin and Ro- berta Schoem, guidance counselors, whispering sweet nothings through the partition. Around the corner we come to the room where safety is taught, and we find Miss Mae Baldanza direct- ing her class. We glance out of the window and we see all the girls swooning with joy. The cause? lt's only the new history professor, Mr. Kenneth Van Hine. ln the library we see a new set of books on the art of argumentation written by Morris Garber. Wearied from our tour we go to the lounge. We spot on a table a newspaper with a picture of Helene Mosberg, who is X , , We see ourselves entering the stately portals and wander- ing along the marbled corridors. Shhl lt is the sound of music. We follow the sound and come to the door marked Music Room . We peek in and find the maestro, lvan Uze, conduct- ing the Junior Symphony Orchestra, We look into the room and find that Rita Mandell is Mr. Biondo's assistant coach of the Pacific Grass Skirt Chorus. Then we saunter along and admire the magnificent structure. We see Lenore Kantor directing a group of eager Thespians in a play called To Do or Not to Do Homework . And in the spacious, mirrored, and carpeted office, we see Shirley Fisher and Mae Braer, the school truant officers. QB currently starring in a Broadway play. On another page there is an advertisement of a very large and beautiful dance school directed by Norman Goldstein. On the homemaking page we find a column entitled Your Children and What To Do With Them , written by Anita Heyman, eminent child psychologist. On the next page is a picture of the county jail which has been remodeled and furnished by New Jersey's foremost interior decorator, Elodie Miller. As the dismissal bell rings, we step out into the corridor again and while we walk along, we hear the latest bits of gos- sip. George Bickoff is reported to be peddling balloons con- cealing answers to the Observer tests. So ends our delightful trip through the new high school of the future. -lll -gui N the following pages, we present the members ot the June, l94'l, graduating class. Hey, boy, give me a paper! After ten years away from this city I doubt if l'll be able to recognize any of the names. What's this? Joe Scangarella for mayor! And look at this. Coach Madgziak predicts another victory for his All Star Army Team. Plans for a third high school in Passaic are being drawn up by Madeline Bayer, Mary Ellen Fiske, and Barbara Decker. l never thought those girls would become famous architects. And what have we here? The new principal of Passaic High School, Dr. Robert Taylor, has announced a heavy program for the new term, with only six study periods a day for every student. Jack Liptak will be the new school dentist, with Angelina Falcone as his assistant. And l see that two new depart- ment heads have been chosen, Devra Schneider, head of the English depart- ment, and Helen Strelkowski, in charge of the French department. l never really thought they'd make it. Look here! Dr. Howard Bindelglass and Dr. Alan Feld, the country's leading baby doctors, have discovered a new method for painless operations. Harold Chapler, our ambassador to Latin America, has announced plans for an underground tunnel between Washington and Chile. Well, look at this! Edward Kerle, the celebrated drummer, will appear as guest of honor at Carnegie Hall with Jack Nadler's famous orchestra. Eileen Landow accompanies them as vocalist. So Merton Harris and Robert Teitlebaum are opening their new quiz kid show, with Carol Kessler and Nor- man Dickerman acting as judges. l thought that Carol would be a his- tory teacher, Rose Bagolie is di- recting, producing, and starring in her own play, The Late Life of the Party. 33080 NEWS Well, what do you know! Stuart T Bierman is going to try for the heavyweight championship boxing l title against Joe Louis at Madison -3 Square Garden. Confidence is ex- pressed by his manager, Buddy Feder. Oh, here comes my train at last! Say! That engineer looks familiar. Why, it's David Stonier. S, Pinaforef' The interest of the students continued to dwell on Music as they atterggled Mr. Maxwell Jarvis' first spring concert. r,s, , riJ13,kh ,A The month of November found Johnny's parents among the casualties at St. Mary's Hospital, suffering from the shock of their visit to Open House. A week later they were revived by the joyous news that Johnny and his fellow barriers had captured their twelfth state crown. g The new year i945 finally rolled around, and Johnny Sophomoreihecame Johnny Junior. This term the tables were reversed as the teachers were marked by the Middle States Evaluators. . Turning slightly sentimental, Johnny and the gang sent approioimately 400 Christmas cards to servicemen still overseas. Christmas spirit was still, prevalent as the Hilltop Star staff came forth with their red and green publication. Johnny's long years of toil and effort as a Junior were finally rewarded with the announcement of his promotion to the Senior Class. p J iili Reverting to peace-time measures, he arose with the roosters in orderito attend classes commencing at 8:30. Of course, Johnny made up for lost sleep while dozing over Newton's Gravitation Theory. . inspiration was given to those fellow students of Johnny's who were musically inclined, when Frankie Carle and Frank Daly made their appearance H. S. to judge the talents of the students, the bestgwere selectedifto play ia the All-Star Band, which performed at the Meadowbrook. The taients of Johnny's classmates were further displayed with the presentation of Stage Door by the Dramatics Club. . s - D , g How can any of thosesfiuclents who braved the Prom forget that colorful panorama depictiggicamivai scenes? it The month of October finally arrivediand with it a tumultuous roar from Johnny's gang, as the class rings made their appearance. November was a big month as it called for the assistance of every one to make the senlorpolay, Life of the Party, a success. December quickly passed, and then came the long waited month, 'for the mid-term seniors danced their last dance at the Senior Prom and walked their last mile to receive their diplomas. The rest of Johnny's classmates in the June class slowly, but surely, made their way to the end, graduating and following the steps of their mid-term classmates on to uncharted courses in the ever-changing world. 78 I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Song Titles To Each His .....,....................... ............
