Arning Coach Amasa Marks E B A S K E T B A L L HEI '40-'4l Passaic l-ligh basketball squad won t f en o their sixteen scheduled games. During the season Coach Marks had his 250th victory. Co-Captains Scottie Rodger and Lefty l-lalkard were the mainstays of the team, aided greatly by the brilliant performances of Uley Miller, Pete Baker, and Mike Agnell. One of the spectacular games of the year was played with Phillipsburg, before whom Passaic went clown in defeat 38-37. On the way to the game, the team enjoyed a fine supper at Washington, N. J., and on the return they were delayed four ho b urs y a severe snowstorm. Other memorable games included th ' e victory over East Rutherford 44-28, in which l-lalkard, Miller, and Rodger starred. Clifton on its home court played marvelously, however, Passaic rallied and emerged winner, 45-33. When Passaic won over Cl'f ' ' ' i ton a second time, she finished twenty-one years of battling with this team h ' , aving suffered but one defeat. Our 47-22 vic- tory over Paterson Central was sparked by the defense of Mike Agnell. FOOTBALL HE Passaic gridders of '40 went through an up and down season, winning four out of their eight struggles. The Pickettmen dropped their first game to East Ruth- erford, l3-O, but came back on the warpath, breaking in Clifton's Mustangs by a l3-6 score. Again the lndians were humbled, this time by Garfield's Boilermakers, l3-6. For revenge, however, the Redskins literally scalped the Dic- kinson team, 33-7. Paterson Eastside emerged from Pas- saic, victorious by l4-l 2. In turn, the l-lilltoppers shut out Paterson Central ,l 3-O. Next the South River eleven eked out a 7-6 win over the Passaic team. Coach Pickett's boys climaxed the season by defeating their keenest rivals, Rutherford's Bulldogs, by one of the greatest scores made since they first met each other in competition, l9-7. Coach Raymond Pickett seemed well pleased with the '40 squad, especially with the sound drubbing they gave to Rutherford on Thanksgiving Day. They're a great group of fellows to work with, he commented, good sportsmen and real fighters. Our sea- son may have been only fair in wins and losses, but each one put all he had into the team, What more could one want? BASEBALL HE baseball team of Passaic High School experienced a most success- ful season in l94O, winning nine games while dropping only three and tying one. Playing the first game of the season against Kearny, i939 co-cham- pions of New Jersey, the team gained a 6-6 draw. Following that, the team ran off seven straight victories. April Z5 the team beat East Rutherford ll-5, and two days later, they swamped Garfield by ll-2. They then nosed out East Side 7-6, beat Central 3-O, walloped Clifton 8-3, and ran all over East Rutherford to the tune of l4-9. After beating East Side 6-O, the Indians suffered their first defeat of the season by succumbing to Central 7-5. The Pickettmen then beat Garfield 4-O, but in their next game against Nutley they received a l2-l beating. Then, with a chance to clinch the County League title, the Indians were defeated l-O by Clifton, but the Pickettmen came back in the next week to rout Clifton l3-4 in a play-off game to take the title.
