The Hilltop cross-country men started off the season by trouncing the Lodi runners 24-31. Barringer won the next meet 16-39, but forfeited the victory because of the ineligibility of their two stars. The Hilltoppers chalked up their first two losses to East Rutherford 15-40, and to Newark Central 19-37. The Indians then beat the Clifton Mustangs 19-36, and St. Mary's of Elizabeth 27-28. Paterson Eastside truly humbled the Marksmen by two shutouts, one of them being the County Championship meet, 15-40. The squad took fourteenth place in the New Jersey State lnterscholastic Championship Run. The team earned twenty-eighth place in the lnter- scholastic Cross-Country Run at Van Cortlandt Park, New York, CROSS CCUNTRY LETTERM EN R. Fuller J. Gibbs S. Glover E. Gold D. Jones E. Lomauro W. FOOTBALL HE Passaic gridders of '40 went through an up and down season, winning four out of their eight struggles. The Pickettmen dropped their first game to East Ruth- erford, l3-O, but came back on the warpath, breaking in Clifton's Mustangs by a l3-6 score. Again the lndians were humbled, this time by Garfield's Boilermakers, l3-6. For revenge, however, the Redskins literally scalped the Dic- kinson team, 33-7. Paterson Eastside emerged from Pas- saic, victorious by l4-l 2. In turn, the l-lilltoppers shut out Paterson Central ,l 3-O. Next the South River eleven eked out a 7-6 win over the Passaic team. Coach Pickett's boys climaxed the season by defeating their keenest rivals, Rutherford's Bulldogs, by one of the greatest scores made since they first met each other in competition, l9-7. Coach Raymond Pickett seemed well pleased with the '40 squad, especially with the sound drubbing they gave to Rutherford on Thanksgiving Day. They're a great group of fellows to work with, he commented, good sportsmen and real fighters. Our sea- son may have been only fair in wins and losses, but each one put all he had into the team, What more could one want?
