Miss CLARA DEGROOT Business Staff Adviser Y - STUBBA MRS, Bektpiciillgdvisei General Sta IT IS a pleasure for us, the Seniors of l94l, to dedicate our yearbook to you, Mrs. Stubba, Miss Manley, and Miss DeGroot. Your unfailing zeal and kindness, shown not only when helping us edit our yearbook but throughout our years in school, will long be remembered. We greatly ap- preciate the time and effort you have so willingly spent that our book might achieve success. 31 Q l TO Miss Marion White, who so generously gave her assistance during the illness ot Miss Manley, we extend our heartfelt thanks, MISS ELAINE MAN L Editorial Staff AdviseEY lille , 4 1 ,1,L1 i. ,. u , A iW' 1 1 v is W o R D John Kieran, Franklin P, Adams, Oscar Levant. Honorable James A. Farley, Guest. The experts are unanimous in expressing their appreciation of the work and the enthusiasm that has gone into the Annual. We hope it is a tre- mendous success and wish to extend the best of luck to all the Seniors who are about to graduate, Sincerely yours, Information, please? Can you tell me where I am? Why, on the first page of the Echo, This edition belongs to the l94l class. What is the 'Echo ? Oh, that's easy. lt's a diary of all the good times the graduates have had during their four years in high school. Just wait till you see the activity section, just crammed with news about our clubs! You'Il never be able to forget our victory over Rutherford in the Thanksgiving game-the write-up is right on the football page. That reminds me: There are some fine pictures in this Echo -and lots of them, too. Why not turn the pages and take a look at our l94l seniors as they appeared to the photographer-dignified and seIf-conscious- and as you've known them-studious or care- free. CONTENTS I. SENIORS II ORGANIZATIONS III ACTIVITIES IV SPORTS V ADVERTISEMENTS PRINCIPAL OLLO A. KENNEDY B.A. Amherstg M.A. Columbia HERE is a new emphasis on all school activity this year. We are urged to strengthen our courses in Physical Education and Vocational work as an aid to National Defense. The pro- posed outcome is to have a bet- ter fundamental physical and mental preparedness for our democratic society. It is hard to distinguish be- tween what is tundamental and sound and what is just a tem- porary expedient in our nation- al progress. The only way to solve our problems is to try continually tor improvement. HEADS CDF ERT L. BLAKESLEE HILDA E, cHiLsoN O D HAGREN ELS l M A. D DRAMATICS CLUB 1 Adviser MISS MARGARET CASKEY President LAWRENCE SAXER Vice-President JOHN COLE Treasurer DORIS HOFFER Secretary BARBARA CONSTANTINE LL the world's a stage, said William Shakespeare, and Miss Margaret Caskey, adviser of the Dramatics Club and coach of the annual plays, proves it to the members. These future John Barrymores and Margaret Web- sters display their talents, not only by assisting on the committees and with the club's administration, but also by acting in the plays presented. Each month the Dramatics Club meets either to view a play or discuss a future production. At the September meeting a stirring melodrama, Ezra Upshot's Triumph, was presented. ln October a new vice-president and treasurer were elected, while in November, Miss Caskey read selections from What a Life, the play to be presented in February. Try-outs were held early in December, and on St. Valentine's Day, the play with an all star cast was presented. This, its twentieth anniversary, was the first time the club greatly reduced the price of admission. lt was also a momentous occasion in that the profits were the greatest in five years. The spring season opened in March with a make-up demonstration held in the auditorium, and was followed by smaller classes conducted after school by Miss Caskey. At the April and May meetings ofthe club, several members entertained with two plays, one of which was a realistic comedy. L Adviser MISS HELEN HALL President DEBATIN6 CLUB SAUL LEVINE MICHAEL RAPAK Vice-President MILTON DAUBER SYLVIA EPSTEIN Secretary SHIRLEY STEINBERG BERN ICE SLAFF Treasurer STAN LEY SCHAMPAN HE Debating Club ot Passaic High School, again showing their fighting spirit, tried for new and higher honors by entering numerous contests this year. Their desire for these new and higher honors, moreover, was satisfied, as we loyal supporters knew it would be. The majority of the members of the debating squad were entered in the contest in original oratory. The same was true for the contest in extempora- neous speaking, Donald Fainberg, Bernice Slatf, and George Moaba were vic- torious in that order. Joyce Koplow was chosen to represent our school in the dramatic interpretation event, Michael Rapak in the extemporaneous speech contest, and Stanley Schampan in the oratorical declamation contest. The American Legion had a contest for pupils of the Passaic schools. Try-outs were held for the High School students, Ten members of the team competed tor the honor ot representing us. George Moaba was the winner, and Jean Connors was the runner-up. In June, the annual Debating Club banquet was held. As usual, this was the high spot ot the debating season, and, as usual, a good time was had by all, with the members of the different squads gladly being ted by their less famous but proud friends. President SHIRLEY YELLIN Vice-President BERNICE SLAFF Treasurer RUTH FRIEDMAN ELEANOR BAKER Secretary DORIS BESSERMAN Advisers MISS GRACE LITTLEFIELD MRS. FLORENCE RICHARDSON MISS FLORENCIA BARRIOS MRS. PRISCILLA DEATON SPANISH CLUB BETTER understanding of the countries and peoples to the south of us is one of our country's foreign policies. ln this respect the Spanish Club is working in harmony with our national government. At various meetings teachers have told about their travels in Mexico, and discussions have been held on the geography and history of the Latin American countries and the habits and customs of their peoples. A big event of the year was the entrance into the club of Senor- ita Barrios, an exchange teacher from Chile. The senorita has taken Miss Mary Card's place while Miss Card is teaching in Chile. Miss Barrios gave a very interesting talk on Chile, especially about the school she taught in, and then offered a prize to the student who wrote the best essays on Chile in English and in Spanish. At the most important meeting Pan American Day was cele- brated. Students, carrying the flags of the twenty-one republics to our south, gave talks on the countries they represented. The meeting was concluded, as usual, by singing Spanish songs, playing games, and enjoying refreshments. LATIN CLUB LTHOUGH humor is practically a permanent member of the Latin Club, several of the meetings this year had a serious turn. There were formal debates and the trial of Lady Latin. But humor was not silent all the time, and spoke her piece at a fashion show. The glamorous models were also famous celebrities, and they displayed the latest Roman creations factae in Italia. The high spot in the entertainment was Dido and Aeneas. The cast was: Dido, Grace Eileen Smith, Aeneas, Henry Condit, Achates, Arthur Levy, Scylla, Ann Lynch, Charybdis, Muriel Schiffman, Juno, Shirley Steinberg, Anna, Arlene Loede, and Jupiter, Paul Schneider. The term ended with a bang in the form of a Christmas program. As the first feature of the new term, the seniors debated the topic Resolved: That Latin should be established as an international lan- guage. On the negative side were Phyllis Freed and Marvin Weinstock, while Howard Rosenstone and Lilyan Boss upheld the affirmative. The judges, however, could come to no definite decision as to which side won. Advisers ELBERT E. BLAKESLEE MISS ANNE PERKINS President ANN LYNCH BORIS KAUFMAN Vice-President SHIRLEY STEIN BERG MARY LUMLEY Secretary MILTON DAUBER LILYAN BOSS Treasurer ARTHUR LEVY MARY JANE PICKETT 79 Pl-lY- CHEM CLUB Adviser MISS FRANCES NIXON President JEROME KOVARSKY Vice-President ARLEN E LOEDE Secretary HERBERT SEKULER Treasurer ALBERT VAN BLARCOM BORIS KAUFMAN AVE you seen the snappy looking pins worn by members of the Phy- Chem Club? The identification is given to them by the American Insti- tute Science and Engineering Clubs with which the Phy-Chem Club is affili- ated. This association entitles members to free admission to all functions of the American Institute. Taking advantage of this privilege, Sylvia Epstein entered a work shop course in physics at New York University, which the Insti- tute sponsored, and was awarded a certificate of merit. This year, at its first meeting, the club, which is the brain child of its adviser, Miss Frances Nixon, took an oath to keep alive the story of the Time Capsule by observing the anniversary of its sealing. At other meetings the members had discussions and saw experiments and movies on such interest- ing scientific topics as Light, Sulfur and Its Uses, and the Utilization of Waste Materials. The big event of the year was a lecture given in auditorium by Mr. Con Williams, a noted deep-sea diver. The lecture, which was open to the gen- eral public, as well as club members, was a huge success. Mr. Williams cap- tured the audience with the story of his life and his many exciting experi- ences, especially his battle with an octopus. MISS MARIAN RACE BENJAMIN GOLDBERG ROBERT HUBER Vice-President SAM SCHLYEN JOSEPH GILMOUR MURIEL SCHIFFMAN MARIE BREISACHER Adviser President Secretary DORIS LEVY Treasurer I-IISTCDRY CLUB ON'T be afraid to talk. These are familiar worcls to the fifty or more members of the History Club, who meet twice a week to discuss current problems. The History Club is an associate club of the broadcast, Town Hall of the Air, and the members talk about problems voiced over this popular weekly program. If the walls of ZE could speak, they would give us the pro and con argu- ments for aid-to-Britain, restriction of agriculture, the worth of the Demo- cratic party, and the retention of the Philippines. Even the seats on the right side of Room 2E and those on the left side have an air of political rivalry, for didn't the Democrats sit on the left and the Republicans on the right during the discussion of the l94O election? On that memorable occasion the black- board was lined with political propaganda, and to each member of the au- dience who asked the speaker a question went a picture of an aspiring polit- ical candidate. The big feature of the year was several trips to Town I-lall, followed by regular excursions to the Doughnut Shop. At these broadcasts the future Ciceros, Demosthenes, and Garrisons see and hear famous personages, and the more enthusiastic members have been known to get autographs. Another feature of the programs was films, of which Miss Hapgood's were especially enjoyable. 'N President NORBERT ROSENZWEIG Vice-President MURI EL SCHIFFMAN Secretary FRANCES LABASI-I Treasurer MICHAEL RAPAK Advisers MISS LOVICY DELANO MISS LOUISE CROCKER GERMAN CLUB OT chocolate, remembrances of Vienna, and Quartettspiele are all reminders of the successful season of the German Club. Who of the members will forget Arthur Kaplan's inimitable portrayal of Till Eulenspiegel when he said to his host, Ja, es ist warm bei dem Ofen ? lt will also be difficult to forget Quartettspiele, which is the favorite game of the Club. lt is played with a card deck of either poets, authors, or cities on the Rhine. The object of the game is to collect as many groups of four as possible by a process similar to the American game of Go Fish. At Christmas the Home Economics Room is transformed into a Weihnachtsraum because presents are scattered under the tree, mem- bers are singing Stille Nacht, hot chocolate is being served in heavy white cups and saucers, and jolly old St. Nikolas, portrayed this year by Harold Kovarsky, bustles about. Each member has to recite a German poem before he can receive a gift from St. Nikolas. ln the past, members representing Passaic in the German Oratorical contest at Rutgers have won many prizes. ln the future the Club will present a Day in Vienna, using a setting of Strauss waltzes. FRENCH CLUB E Cercle Francais, which provides a means whereby students may enjoy the advantages of club life and learn more of French culture through songs, games, and lectures, enjoyed a pleasant year. At the first social meeting, which was held in October, there was a presentation of skits and an exhibition of hobbies. The lectures ot the season were given by Miss Virginia Covington, ofthe Traphagen School of Fashion, and Mr. Mark Rappaport, who is at- tending New York University. Miss Covington spoke on French design- ing, and Mr. Rappaport, who attended Passaic High last year, described school life in Brussels. Pictures of Paris were also shown. The Christmas program was composed of French carol singing, a humorous skit, and a reading from the novel, Marie Chapdelainef' Miss Beatrice Rosenberg, a practice teacher, arranged the March program, which concerned the history of the province of Dauphine, its SOHQS, dances, and customs. In April a popular French operetta, The Wed- ding of Jeannette, by Victor Masse was presented. The club has adopted a French boy who is now living in England. Advisers MRS. These words open each meeting of the Italian Club, the main purpose ot which is to teach its members more about Italy and the Italian language. And this is one place where learning is fun. All meetings are conducted in Italian except elections. At the first meeting in October officers were elected. Italian games were played at the November meeting, and prizes were given out to the lucky winners. ln December a Christmas program was held. An Italian poem was recited by Mildred Schimmenti, piano solos were given by Emily Belli and Juliette De Ligny, and Angelina Cormaci sang an Italian Christmas carol. Small gifts were distributed to the members. At the February meeting a new treasurer was elected. Miss I-lapgood also displayed her pictures ot the western part of the United States and told of her travels there. The March meeting was devoted to hobbies. Each member brought his hobby and spoke about it in Italian. One of the most unusual was that ot Miss Ware, who collects toy donkeys. lt was planned to have a speaker at one of the spring meetings, and to have another devoted to Italian Art. With such programs it is no wonder that the members of the Italian Club hate to hear the words, La sedute e chiusa, which end their meetings. MISS MAY STILES Adviser HE Slide Rule Club under the direction of Miss May Stiles was organized in Passaic High School for the purpose of instructing all pupils interested in the correct use of the slide rule. The club does not resemble any other club of the High School in that there are neither any officers nor any dues, but the whole membership is under the tutelage of Miss Stiles. The club was organized with only one view in mind: to interest and instruct pupils in the rapid and accurate use of the slide rule. Each meeting, on Thursday, is de- voted entirely to the accomplishment ot that purpose. The Slide Rule Club is conducted like a regular class, and all the members show a deep interest in the lessons. This spring a new experiment is being tried by the Mathematics Depart- ment. With the students ofthe Slide Rule Club as a nucleus, a group ot pu- pils assemble once a week, and, under the guidance of Miss Stiles, discuss elements of higher mathematics which cannot be approached in school, Dur- ing these meetings logs fly around the room with reckless abandon, and formulae are used and discarded like scraps of paper. The students them- selves are in charge of these meetings, and each pupil in his turn is chosen to do some research and present his findings to the body as a whole. SLIDE RULE CLUB President JOSEPHINE FRANCAVIGLIA DEBORAH HOLTZMAN Vice-President DEBORAH HOLTZMAN DOROTHY RETZ Secretary AUDREY GOLDEN EVELYN ADRIAN Treasurer ESTH ER TASSOS Adviser MISS HILDA CHILSON l-IIL-ET-CHI CLUB ADEEZ AND GENTLEMEN: On this page we have the amazing and mystifying l-lil-et-Chi Club which, during the past year, performed the marvelous feat of almost doubling its membership! This is a true story, ladeez and gentlemen-and it's little wonder when one glances at the club's interesting program. In November the members provided their companions with enter- tainment plus instruction when they presented a fashion show consisting of a complete wardrobe for a high school girl, made and modeled by themselves. Miss Smith of the DuBarry Pattern Company, commented on the styles and fabrics. ln December the club held a Christmas party at which home-made gifts were exhibited and the club's most newly acquired and highly prized possession, a radio, was allowed to entertain the chosen few. March brought a lecture by Genevieve Blazejowski, who described her travels in Europe and Asia. In May the club held its annual spring dance, which was the grand finale in the year's entertainment. Good luck, l-lil-et-Chi, and may you always have as happy and busy a season as this has beenl RADIO CLUB HE Radio Club is one of the newer organizations of the High School, being introduced last year to satisfy radio-minded students who wished to obtain amateur radio operators' licenses. Although it start- ed out with but a few enterprising individuals, the club can boast of doubled membership this term, two members being girls. At the weekly meetings radio theory and the international code have been mastered. An interesting lecture on the vacuum tube was given by Mary Ann Reeves, the first feminine member. The club is proud of its fully equipped transmitter, and the mem- bers were anxious to pass their license tests in order to operate it. During the year a receiver was built, which automatically gives the members opportunity to put into practice the fundamentals they have grasped. The high school has its own call letter, WZMRQ. Last year one boy received his license to operate his set, and this season President Frank Arvay obtained his. Some members may wish to make a career of radio, as has past President lsrael Sinofsky, who now operates a radio shop in Passaic. Adviser MATTHIAS MILLER President FRANK ARVAY Vice-President MARY ANN REEVES Secretary NANCY FULLER 87 PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB Adviser President JOHN ANDERSON Secretary NANCY FULLER Treasurer CARL BRUBAKER HIS year the Photography Club, besides doing exceptional work in the field of picture taking, has also struck a clever note in interior decoration. ln order to provide a dark room in which to develop their prints, the club mem- bers constructed and installed a system of blinds for the windows of the mechanical drawing room. There Passaic l-ligh's ardent camera fans now come to revel in the mysteries of the little black box. The club has also been working on a snapshot project of various civic and public buildings in Passaic, Upon completion, it will be donated either to the Photography Club or to our Alma Mater. Several group hikes were taken in and about Passaic to capture some candid glimpses of the city. This scheme provided excellent material for comparison, criticism, and appraisal. The group also witnessed some illus- trated lectures on photography by prominent photographers, among them George Holm of the Herald News staff. Included in the entertainment during the meetings were pictures featuring comedies, demonstrations of camera techniques by expert photographers, and full length films. With only three years of organized activity behind it, Mr. Bowes' Camera Club has already gained a wealth of experience in the field of photography. JOHN BOWES MATTHIAS MILLER Adviser President ALEX MANGEL JOHN BELLIN I Vice-President JOHN BELLIN I SPENCER SCHOEM Secretary SPENCER SCHOEM ALBERT F IORI HE Aero Club is the refuge of young, air-minded enthusiasts and future birdmen of America. Here, under Mr. Miller's instruction they eagerly gather to learn how to use the models as a means of studying the art of flying and the physics of the airplane. While the boys are enjoying the task of building, they are also training and disciplining themselves in their chosen field of work. In April the Aero Club sponsored a contest in which three classes of models were flown: the gas model, the glider, and the rubber model. The contest committee was composed of Spencer Schoem, William Stuckey, and John Krehel. The models were made individually and the builders received no expert help, hence, the decision of the judges was based on the craftsman- ship, technique, and performance of the plane. A motion picture was given in order to raise money for the club's treas- ury. Another event of the season was a visit to the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics, which proved to be most inspiring and beneficial to the mem- bers. They witnessed actual classes in ground mechanics and engineering. These activities were all a result of the expert guidance of their adviser and the fine leadership of their officers. AERO CLUB President JOSEPH I NE CH I RICHELLO Vice-President DOROTH EA CUCCI Secretary JEAN McKEE Treasurer GRACE GIAMPAPA Adviser MRS. JESSIE BURNETT TRI-Y HE Passaic Girls' Tri-Y under the leadership of Mrs. Burnett has been helping the community this year by doing Red Cross work, making afghans and participating in sewing projects. l-lowever, since all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, they do have their fun. Last autumn the Tri-Y held a successful dance. They also spon- sored a spaghetti supper to honor the Passaic l-ligh School football team. This spring the Tri-Y held another dance which was as great a success as the one earlier in the year. The club has also sent three delegates to the Mid-Winter Girl Reserve Conference in Plainfield, which was held on March eighth and ninth. These girls were Jean lnsinna, Catherine Brinley, and Gloria Munsell. During the week of April twentieth to twenty-sixth, the Girl Re- serves all over the nation celebrated their sixtieth anniversary. On Sunday, April twentieth, the Passaic Tri-Y took charge of the Vesper Services at the Y. W. C. A. The week came to a successful close with a birthday party at which some of the Tri-Y girls entertained with a fiesta for which Rose Cardone was responsible. so :FK I-II-Y HE Passaic Hi-Y is composed of three separate groups, the Arnold, Dales, and Blue Hi-Y's. There is a wide scope of activities for all these clubs, ranging from barn dances to bowling tournaments. This year the Blue I-Ii-Y came out on top in bowling and was second in the interclub basketball. ln the fall of l94lO a barn dance was held by this club to celebrate Hallowe'en, and it plans to sponsor dances dur- ing the spring. Last Christmas vacation, besides sending food baskets to the needy, the Arnold I-Ii-Y staged a party for a group of underprivileged children, carrying on an annual custom of community aid, During the l94l season, this club is holding interclub bowling, pool, and table tennis contests in order to develop skill in these sports. lt is also demonstrating, on a map, where most of the accidents in Passaic happen, thus aiding the safety program. The Dales I-Ii-Y has made much effort to develop its monthly educational conferences and vocational lectures by authorities on varied subjects. lt also has held several dances, rw.. ,..,, c Nw' Advisers JAMES MESSINEO PENFIELD O. Under the able supervision of Miss Frances Brown and her co-workers, Miss Mary Card, Mrs. Nora Gilson, and Miss Helena Denfeld, this year's campaign has proved most successful. Since the beginning of the war, the Penny Aiders have been in- terested in the plight of the refugees. They have solicited for knitted squares which, in turn, were made into blankets for the Red Cross. So far this year, fifteen blankets have been sent to the war sufferers. Collecting potatoes for our orphan asylum is an annual event. This year the club gathered up half a ton of potatoes which were gratefully accepted by the Home. Another one of its activities is the collection of tin foil, which netted five dollars for the Visiting Nurses' Associa- tion. During the spring a new campaign was launched, the proceeds of which have aided greatly in helping them to continue their fine work. The goal was set for 515150, but more than this was raised. ACT V S 'wel BAND HAT puts us into the spirit of things at a football game? What makes everyone run to see a parade? We certainly couldn't stump the experts with these questions. Of course the answer is, The Band. ln the short time of four years the Passaic School Band has become one of the finest in this vicinity. It has steadily grown in size and now con- tains approximately fifty-five members. Under the splendid supervision of Mr. Arthur C. Dunkerley, their repertoire has increased greatly and their mu- sic has become finer. The band contributed largely to the success of the football games during the entire season. In the early spring months it entertained the students of the Woodrow Wilson, Franklin, and Memorial Schools. Later, it played at the gym demonstration, and, in May, held its fourth annual concert, which met with great success. The people of this city can well be proud of the Passaic School Band. We predict that in the future it will be considered one of the finest bands in this section. CHEERLEADERS Chorus at work on Oocrctta MRS. CHARLES HUMPHREYS Pianist CLAYTON P. The plot ot Patience, like most of Gilbert and Sulli- van's works, becomes rather involved. Bunthorne, loved by many ladies, loves Patience, a dairy maid, who loves the hand- some Grosvenor, Patience, believing that love must be un- seltish, agrees to wed Bunthorne because Grosvenor is too per- fect. SENIOR PLAY UNE MAD, a three-act comedy of modern youth under the able direction of Miss Ruth Thomas, who gave much time and effort that it might be an overwhelming success, was presented by the Senior Class on November IS, at the Passaic High School to a record-breaking crowd. The action of the play revolves around Claire Raphael, whose characterization of Penny Wood is beyond reproach, and Saul Topchik, who gives an unforgettable performance of Chuck Harris, the boy next door, as they go about the fre- quently difficult and always amusing business of growing up. When Howard lsenberg, best known at this time as Penny's Uncle Mervyn, brings Edward Koster, who does a marvelous characterization of that suave gentleman, Roger Van Vleck, home from college, Penny forgets to be a man-hater and succumbs to an attack of puppy love which is ten times worse than measles, Things really happen, however, when Penny almost disrupts two families in trying to make herself attrac- tive to the fascinating senior who, in turn, tries equally hard to make himself just as fascinating to Mervyn's flirtatious young girl friend and Chuck's dictatorial older sister Julie, played by Barbara Constantine, who carries the love interest of the play. The demonstration began with an address by Mr, Kennedy. Dances fol- lowed, among them the Tambourine, Cowgirl, lndian, Mexican, Drum Major, the Wand Drill, and Collegiate Tap. Posture exercises were a feature, and a tumbling and an apparatus team showed their skill, An original first-aid skit, in which four experts were asked questions, because of its resemblance to the well-known Information Please held the rapt attention of the audience. The girls are to be commended, not only for their ability to present the gymnasium work, but also for their courage. On the night of the demonstrae tion occurred one of the worst storms of the winter. The weather, however, did not interfere with the presentation nor with the enjoyment of the au- dience. The Hilltop cross-country men started off the season by trouncing the Lodi runners 24-31. Barringer won the next meet 16-39, but forfeited the victory because of the ineligibility of their two stars. The Hilltoppers chalked up their first two losses to East Rutherford 15-40, and to Newark Central 19-37. The Indians then beat the Clifton Mustangs 19-36, and St. Mary's of Elizabeth 27-28. Paterson Eastside truly humbled the Marksmen by two shutouts, one of them being the County Championship meet, 15-40. The squad took fourteenth place in the New Jersey State lnterscholastic Championship Run. The Pickettmen dropped their first game to East Ruth- erford, l3-O, but came back on the warpath, breaking in Clifton's Mustangs by a l3-6 score. Again the lndians were humbled, this time by Garfield's Boilermakers, l3-6. For revenge, however, the Redskins literally scalped the Dic- kinson team, 33-7. Paterson Eastside emerged from Pas- saic, victorious by l4-l 2. In turn, the l-lilltoppers shut out Paterson Central ,l 3-O. Next the South River eleven eked out a 7-6 win over the Passaic team. Coach Pickett's boys climaxed the season by defeating their keenest rivals, Rutherford's Bulldogs, by one of the greatest scores made since they first met each other in competition, l9-7. Coach Raymond Pickett seemed well pleased with the '40 squad, especially with the sound drubbing they gave to Rutherford on Thanksgiving Day. They're a great group of fellows to work with, he commented, good sportsmen and real fighters. Our sea- son may have been only fair in wins and losses, but each one put all he had into the team, What more could one want? Co-Captains Scottie Rodger and Lefty l-lalkard were the mainstays of the team, aided greatly by the brilliant performances of Uley Miller, Pete Baker, and Mike Agnell. One of the spectacular games of the year was played with Phillipsburg, before whom Passaic went clown in defeat 38-37. On the way to the game, the team enjoyed a fine supper at Washington, N. J., and on the return they were delayed four ho b urs y a severe snowstorm. Other memorable games included th ' e victory over East Rutherford 44-28, in which l-lalkard, Miller, and Rodger starred. Clifton on its home court played marvelously, however, Passaic rallied and emerged winner, 45-33. When Passaic won over Cl'f ' ' ' i ton a second time, she finished twenty-one years of battling with this team h ' , aving suffered but one defeat. Playing the first game of the season against Kearny, i939 co-cham- pions of New Jersey, the team gained a 6-6 draw. Following that, the team ran off seven straight victories. April Z5 the team beat East Rutherford ll-5, and two days later, they swamped Garfield by ll-2. They then nosed out East Side 7-6, beat Central 3-O, walloped Clifton 8-3, and ran all over East Rutherford to the tune of l4-9. After beating East Side 6-O, the Indians suffered their first defeat of the season by succumbing to Central 7-5. The Pickettmen then beat Garfield 4-O, but in their next game against Nutley they received a l2-l beating. Then, with a chance to clinch the County League title, the Indians were defeated l-O by Clifton, but the Pickettmen came back in the next week to rout Clifton l3-4 in a play-off game to take the title. Coach Pickett expects a difficult time during l94l as most of last year's nine have either graduated or left school. lO9 Raymond Pick LETTERMEN P. Baker A. Blazeiowski S. Hanisko P. Knapik J. The annual interclass meet was followed by meets with Lodi, Lyndhurst, East Rutherford, Clifton, Eastside and the county meet at the Passaic stadium. During the season Passaic also had two intramural meets, one of which was won by the Blues, the other by the Reds. The outstanding meet was with Lodi, in which Passaic took every first place and won 6l3A1 to ISV4. ln it Captains Stewart and Stoy gathered 20 points between them. Passaic went on to defeat East Ruth- erford, Lyndhurst, and Clifton, but was defeated by a powerful East- side team. ln the annual County League meet between Passaic, Clifton, and Eastside, Passaic placed men in every event. A medal was awarded Captain Stewart for his magnificent run in the 440. Captain Stoy, John Dukich, and Wilbur Marshall placed in their respective meets. Co-Captains for l94l are John Dukich and Wilbur Marshall. Last year Dukich was outstanding in the 440, 880, running broad jump, and mile relay. Marshall paced the broad jumpers and instructed the fellows in all field events. Passaic expects to have a good l94l season with six meets, two intramurals, one interclass, and the annual county meet. William Fredrickson N l94O the Passaic High School tennis team experienced a most successful season, winning all eight conference games, and losing only to Barringer during the entire season. The net men started the season with a 3-2 win over Clif- ton, the l939 league champion. ln the only match engaged in outside the league, Passaic took its first and only beating at the hands of Barringer by the score of 4-l. The team then bounced back to wallop Central Paterson by 4-l and later beat Clifton again by 3-2. Then on May l6 the team clinched the league title by a 4-l victory over Eastside Paterson which, ac- cording to Co-Captain Melvin Taub, was the hardest fought game of the season. The netmen went on to beat Garfield 4-l, and from then on the only thing that stopped them was the weather, when they were rained out of succeeding games with East Orange and Bloomfield. Back into the swing of things again, the team ran over Central Paterson by a score of 4-l, and again defeated Garfield by 3-2. The season was ended with a smashing 4-l victory over Paterson Eastside. Because of ineligibility and graduation there remain only three of last year's men around whom Coach Woods can build a new team. The prospects are not very bright unless some new tennis stars have come into the school since last tennis season. LETTERMEN W, Fredrickson J. Hazonics F, Shagin M.
