and Ms. Sadler, went to New Orleans. The junior class was extremely active and capped their efforts by giving a fantastic prom. The student council sponsored a school clean-up week. During the past several years we have watched the band grow mightily under the leadership of Mr. Williams. This year they embarked on the ambitious project of raising funds for new band uniforms. Some of their fund-raising events were a dinner-play at the Waldo Astoria, St. Valentine’s Day dance, a band vs. faculty basketball game and the Paseo alumni sponsored a dance. The band does a great deal toward creating greater spirit at all events. 4. 6. 1. Interior of offices after the fire. 2. Office windows. 3. Smoldering file cabinets thrown out of office. 4. It was originated and coordinated by the physical education department under the leadership of Coach Bowie. The physical education classes performed various popular dances of bv-gone years. Each class gave a one-act play under the direction of Mrs. Hunter. Other activities included an art contest, a cake-baking contest, and a track meet between the classes. Hopefully, this will become a yearly event. The Class of ’78 demonstrated true school spirit in their choice of gift to the school. They did not selfishly give a decorative object to call attention to themselves but gave a “living” gift in the form of a new set of drums to the band. For years to come, the Class of ’78 will be a part of each school event, increasing school spirit among the whole student body. We have proven this year that we can “get it together” and overcome flood, ice, snow, and fire. Let's make togetherness a habit. With a unified student body we can create a new spirit, proud to be Pirates, the BEST!

For several months school went on as usual, with a couple of surprise ice and snow vacations. Then, on Saturday morning, February 25, 1978, disaster struck again. This time it was again in the form of a major fire. The main office, the administrators’ offices, and the counseling center were completely destroyed, as was the whole communication system for the building. At first it was thought that the student records burned. However, they were just charred around the edges so could be salvaged. The pre-enrollment for 1978-79 had recently been completed and was burned so had to be done all over again. The whole building had a great deal of smoke damage. The fire department estimated the damage in excess of $250,000. 1. After day and night clean-up through Monday, we were back in school. The whole student body rallied as true Pirates. Everything in the lockers was covered with a greasy, black smoke film. We had no tones to end and begin classes, only air horns operated by assistant principals on each floor. What could have been utter chaos was not because of the “together” attitude of the students. The year had many events and activities which indicated that Paseo is on its way to the goal of togetherness. During the spring holiday, 14 seniors and class sponsors, Ms. Whitfield 3. 4
