GETTIN’ IT TOGETHER A year of spirited beginnings, disasters and rebuilding has come and gone. Many events have made this year unforgettable. But for Paseo High School, it must be said that great strides were taken toward the rebirth of our hidden greatness. We have proven that we can recover from major set-backs and push on toward our goals. That first week we thought we were off to a good start. Then the September 12 flood occurred. This natural disaster took 25 lives and caused many millions of dollars damage. Many students and their families had their homes and possessions damaged or destroyed by the Hood. The torrential rains which caused the flooding (16 inches in 24 hours on ground previously water-soaked) also caused considerable damage to Paseo. Several math rooms were damaged so much from roof leaks that classes had to be held in other rooms for the remainder of the year. For the first time we had a “flood day,” the first of many days to be made up at the end of the year. We had just about recovered from the unsettling effects of the flood when we had to undergo a complete reorganization the first part of October. During the summer the attendance boundary lines were changed which sent many pre-enrolled Paseo students to other schools. With the drop in enrollment figures, we lost several teachers. Therefore, it seemed that we started school all over again in October. Photos: Cars washed into Brush Creek by the flood.

For several months school went on as usual, with a couple of surprise ice and snow vacations. Then, on Saturday morning, February 25, 1978, disaster struck again. This time it was again in the form of a major fire. The main office, the administrators’ offices, and the counseling center were completely destroyed, as was the whole communication system for the building. At first it was thought that the student records burned. However, they were just charred around the edges so could be salvaged. The pre-enrollment for 1978-79 had recently been completed and was burned so had to be done all over again. The whole building had a great deal of smoke damage. The fire department estimated the damage in excess of $250,000. 1. After day and night clean-up through Monday, we were back in school. The whole student body rallied as true Pirates. Everything in the lockers was covered with a greasy, black smoke film. We had no tones to end and begin classes, only air horns operated by assistant principals on each floor. What could have been utter chaos was not because of the “together” attitude of the students. The year had many events and activities which indicated that Paseo is on its way to the goal of togetherness. During the spring holiday, 14 seniors and class sponsors, Ms. Whitfield 3. 4
