But for Paseo High School, it must be said that great strides were taken toward the rebirth of our hidden greatness. We have proven that we can recover from major set-backs and push on toward our goals. That first week we thought we were off to a good start. Then the September 12 flood occurred. This natural disaster took 25 lives and caused many millions of dollars damage. Many students and their families had their homes and possessions damaged or destroyed by the Hood. The torrential rains which caused the flooding (16 inches in 24 hours on ground previously water-soaked) also caused considerable damage to Paseo. Several math rooms were damaged so much from roof leaks that classes had to be held in other rooms for the remainder of the year. For the first time we had a “flood day,” the first of many days to be made up at the end of the year. We had just about recovered from the unsettling effects of the flood when we had to undergo a complete reorganization the first part of October. During the summer the attendance boundary lines were changed which sent many pre-enrolled Paseo students to other schools. With the drop in enrollment figures, we lost several teachers. Therefore, it seemed that we started school all over again in October. Photos: Cars washed into Brush Creek by the flood. For several months school went on as usual, with a couple of surprise ice and snow vacations. Then, on Saturday morning, February 25, 1978, disaster struck again. This time it was again in the form of a major fire. The main office, the administrators’ offices, and the counseling center were completely destroyed, as was the whole communication system for the building. At first it was thought that the student records burned. However, they were just charred around the edges so could be salvaged. The pre-enrollment for 1978-79 had recently been completed and was burned so had to be done all over again. The whole building had a great deal of smoke damage. The fire department estimated the damage in excess of $250,000. 1. After day and night clean-up through Monday, we were back in school. The whole student body rallied as true Pirates. Everything in the lockers was covered with a greasy, black smoke film. We had no tones to end and begin classes, only air horns operated by assistant principals on each floor. What could have been utter chaos was not because of the “together” attitude of the students. The year had many events and activities which indicated that Paseo is on its way to the goal of togetherness. During the spring holiday, 14 seniors and class sponsors, Ms. Whitfield 3. 4 and Ms. Sadler, went to New Orleans. The junior class was extremely active and capped their efforts by giving a fantastic prom. The student council sponsored a school clean-up week. During the past several years we have watched the band grow mightily under the leadership of Mr. Williams. This year they embarked on the ambitious project of raising funds for new band uniforms. Some of their fund-raising events were a dinner-play at the Waldo Astoria, St. Valentine’s Day dance, a band vs. faculty basketball game and the Paseo alumni sponsored a dance. The band does a great deal toward creating greater spirit at all events. 4. 6. 1. Interior of offices after the fire. 2. Office windows. 3. Smoldering file cabinets thrown out of office. 4. Outside of building. 5. Smoke damage in the front hall. 6. Thank you, KCFD. for saving our school. For the first time, Paseo had a May Day celebration. It was originated and coordinated by the physical education department under the leadership of Coach Bowie. The physical education classes performed various popular dances of bv-gone years. Each class gave a one-act play under the direction of Mrs. Hunter. Other activities included an art contest, a cake-baking contest, and a track meet between the classes. Hopefully, this will become a yearly event. The Class of ’78 demonstrated true school spirit in their choice of gift to the school. They did not selfishly give a decorative object to call attention to themselves but gave a “living” gift in the form of a new set of drums to the band. For years to come, the Class of ’78 will be a part of each school event, increasing school spirit among the whole student body. We have proven this year that we can “get it together” and overcome flood, ice, snow, and fire. Let's make togetherness a habit. With a unified student body we can create a new spirit, proud to be Pirates, the BEST! PASEON STAFF 7. 1. Photographer Regina Miller doing her thing. 2. Cathy Clark and Doris Wells at work. 3. I imagined myself wearing a long yellow robe, a hat with a tassel, my name announced as I walked across the stage to receive my diploma. Then, after commencement, I dreamed of throwing my hat off and —Wait’Hold everything!!! What about all the fun 1 had during this one year? Remember the time you skipped class to have a little fun? Remember the senior picnic and the parade? Do you remember the senior trip? Do you remember the hard work you put into your classes? Remember your grade cards? They showed how hard you worked—or didn’t work. Remember the senior dinner dance? I know you remember the term paper you wrote for Mrs. Hurt. Remember the times we had substitutes and didn’t do our classwork? Do you remember your 18th birthday? Hopefully growing older and wiser? Do you remember the friendship and learning experiences you shared with your friends? Do you remember the people you grew up with? Who you practically spent your life with? Before I threw off my hat, 1 thought of past experiences. I almost wished to go back. I know graduation is a happy event, but there is one sad moment about your senior year—Saying goodbye to all your peers. I threw off my hat and, suddenly, I realized I was an adult and have a whole future ahead of me. Beverly Carr A Change From red and white To black and gold. From flying in the sky To sailing on the sea. From Manual To Paseo was quite . . . A change. New friends, new foes, A whole new life 1 didn't want. Time has passed, things have changed. The past’s behind me now. 1 love the old school, and miss old friends, But Paseo is my home.
