Today is new. It is very much like any other late summer morning, warm and almost-fall. But just below this surface of the ordinary, a pulse of expectancy begins to vibrate. Today is different. Up on the hill, sunrise outlines Paseo's tower, just as it has during the past summer months. But today, something is different— and expectant. As the windows of the tower look down toward the walk below, they reflect the familiar image of gathering students. Students who assemble in small groups and crowds. Anxious, excited, eager students not quite ready yet to give up vacation freedoms. They come from different neighborhoods, range widely in age, and have skins of different colors. Yet, when once they enter the school, they will be united into one group with a common force holding them together. They will be Pirates. Gradually, the scattered groups melt into hundreds of expectant people. Time is getting close. Soon the swimming pools, the lakes, the picnics, the summer jobs and the chances to sleep late will give way to a different kind of adventure. History, English. Spanish and math will be the rule. Club meetings and fall play rehearsals will occupy late afternoon hours. Suddenly, the doors yawn open after three months of rest, and Paseo's student body, her Pirates, pour into the corridors. Laughing, talk- ing. shoving, they bring the building back to life. The tower is observing and recording still another first day of school. It has witnessed many already, and knows that the coming year will bring hard work. fun. and sometimes disappointment. Welcome, Pirates! Welcome to a world of learning.
