The students in Paseo's art classes are constantly learning new techniques and ways to express themselves. Painting, printing, sculpturing and sketching are the usual methods of self-expression. Students are constantly experimenting with new materials to produce varied effects. Painting with food colors and script lettering with balsa wood strips are two of the new methods being used this year. Under the instruction of Paseo's three art teachers, the pupils develop their artistic ability to the fullestg each striving to master his own particular style. Mr. Richard Burns, biology in- structor, is assistant f o o t b a ll coach. Mr. Burns is an avid sports enthusiast. 22 Science plays an important role in the curriculum at Paseo. With the approach of the atomic age, an increased stress has been placed on all fields of science. The Science Department provides classes in general science, physics, chemistry, human science, biology and earth science. Chemistry and physics are important basic science courses which pave the way for specialization in college. The human science classes performed some interesting experi- ments this year. By laboratory analysis, each student was able to determine his blood type. Also, a spirometer was used to determine the lung capacity of the students. Biology offers to students a closer look at living things and the changes which substances undergo. For the first time in a long while, an advanced course in biology was offered. The dissection of a monkey is one highlight that few of the students will forget. Mr. D. C. Evans is a biology and human science instructor. His hobbies include gardening and building science equipment. Mr. Joseph R. Klein, biology in- structor, is coach of the freshman football team. Mr. La Verne Cable, vocal music instructor, is director of A Cap- pella Choir and Girls' Choir. His leisure time is spent directing his church choir, hunting and fishing. U 'ii 55 558 Mrs. Beatrice Jourdan, music teacher, is on the National Honor Society Committee. She enjoys playing bridge. Bach to Bernstein- the sound of music. Music is a vital part of many a Paseoiteis course of study. ln the field of vocal music students may progress from beginning music to A Cappella Choir and Girls' Choir. Band i and Orchestra further each pupills experience in performing with an instrumental group. Annually, student musicians perform at A Missouri's state-wide instrumental and vocal Mn Mr. arts and i contests. They bring well-deserved honor to themselves and in turn to Paseo. Whether a student displays his talents with a vocal or instrumental group or just listens, he can be proud of Paseoas reputation in the field of music. ' Mr. M. L.
