From awkward eighth-graders mighty pirates grow Paseo's common learnings classes serve as a foundation from which eighth graders familiarize themselves with high school life. School business is conducted during this period and the pupils become ac- quainted with their student government. Both English and social studies are in- cluded in the common learnings program, thus, the new students have fewer teachers with whom they must adjust. Literature, handwriting, composition, formal gram- mar and spelling constitute the English course. lncluded in the social studies curriculum is history, geography and cur- rent affairs. The Missouri Constitution test, which is required by law, is the main criteria for the completion of this class. Mr. Thomas R. Adams, common learnings instructor, keeps phys- ically fit by riding his bicycle. Miss Rosemary Lee Davis, com- mon learnings instructor, sponsors Zetas Literary Society. Mr. Richard Burns, biology in- structor, is assistant f o o t b a ll coach. Mr. Burns is an avid sports enthusiast. 22 Science plays an important role in the curriculum at Paseo. With the approach of the atomic age, an increased stress has been placed on all fields of science. The Science Department provides classes in general science, physics, chemistry, human science, biology and earth science. Chemistry and physics are important basic science courses which pave the way for specialization in college. The human science classes performed some interesting experi- ments this year. By laboratory analysis, each student was able to determine his blood type. Also, a spirometer was used to determine the lung capacity of the students. Biology offers to students a closer look at living things and the changes which substances undergo. For the first time in a long while, an advanced course in biology was offered. The dissection of a monkey is one highlight that few of the students will forget. Mr. D. C. Evans is a biology and human science instructor. His hobbies include gardening and building science equipment. Mr. Joseph R. Klein, biology in- structor, is coach of the freshman football team.
