HISTORY OF THE SENIOR CLASS 1948-49 Tuesday, September 7, 1945, was a big day for the Freshmen, because they were beginning high school. It was a goal they had striven for some time to achieve. We were very much excited and thrilled to think of being with older boys and girls in high school. We had planned to make good grades so our teachers would be proud of us.- Miss Percival and Miss Weiss were our home room teachers. Our officers for the year were: Thomas Kelly, Richard Goldsby, Jim Dew, Tommy Stevens, Beverly Houdlette, and Carolyn Sylvester: and Edna Earle Williams was Red and Black reporter. In order to take part in the worth while activities of the school, the class elected Rodney Copeland, Chairman of the Victory Bond drive, and we were well represented in the final check-up. We voted to save Crusader bands and to raise money for the treasury. We also sent a Christmas box of fruit and other items to the orphans. Miss Percival and Miss Weiss helped very much in making these achievements possible. Miss Percival was also a great help to us when the Student Council Constitution was up for ratification: she gave a talk stressing its good points, and it was passed by the student body. At the end of the school year, a farewell party was given in honor of Miss Weiss, our coach. We had a feeling of satisfaction for the completion of a very successful year. Our Sophomore class also had a good year with Miss Percival and Mr. Parton our home room teachers. The following people were chosen for offices: Mott Jackson, Jimmie Hudson, Loutrell Warren, and Archie McKendree. In Mr. Parton's home room, officers were: Richard Goldsby, Doris Anderson, and Jim Dew. Our rooms sold Christmas cards to raise money for our classes. Some of our honor students served at the Junior and Senior banquet. They were: Jimmie Ann Rhodes, Villa Mae Parker, Loutrell Warren, Gertrude Harper, Howell Mickler, Archie McKendree, Gordon Larkin, Rodney Copeland, Lawrence Burk-halter, Ladonia Sullivan, Jim Dew, Richard Goldsby, Delores Mann, David Peacock, and Thelma Robbins. The year we were Juniors, Miss Tant and Miss Rauch were our home room teachers. Officers chosen were: Mott Jackson, Jimmie Hudson, Gertrude Harper, and Villa Mae Parker. Once we were settled, our class voted on a hay ride for our classes' own enjoyment. Richard Goldsby provided transportation, and all went skating. One exciting day the Juniors ordered their class rings The day of the Junior and Senior banquet, jll the Juniors were so excited they could not think of studying. Mr. Cornelius let us go up to the Woman's Club and help decorate the club for that big night. That night all the Juniors and Seniors were there; boys in suits and ties; girls in pretty evening gowns. After a wonderful dinner, the crowning of the King and Queen took place. The Junior court were Jack Dennis, Gertrude Harper, Libby Burger and Lawrence Burkhalter. Our Senior year was a happy year because it wouldn't be long before we would be finished with high school and ready for college or other big adventures. Mr. Hurn and Mr. Ellison were our home room teachers. Sponsors were Mrs. Cartwright and Mr. Smith. In October our class rings came. In English class just before we received them, Mrs. Cartwright had a hard time getting us to study; so finally she gave up all hope of getting us quiet. Mr. Cornelius brought the rings to us and we surely were glad to get them. They really looked good. Then football season came. All the games were very good. We won the Tampa Bay Conference and were very proud. We do give a great deal of credit to the A and B string squad. Our Senior class presented a play called. What a Life which was a big success and all enjoyed it very much. The banquet of course was the nicest ever had, and all had a wonderful time. On Senior skip day all the other students envied us because we had a whole day off to have fun. And on Senior's kid day all the students had a good laugh at the Seniors because they really did act like kids. We Seniors shall never forget our good old school days; when our hair has turned to silver we shall look back to the happiest days of our lives which shall live in our memories the rest of our lives. When graduation was over all the Seniors were glad to say—Whew! !—thats over! ! TEN YEARS FROM NOW At last I saw a boat coming around the bend. I only hoped that this ship bore news from my home town, Dade City, Florida. As I ran up the gangplank, someone handed me a newspaper. I was so excited that I rushed to my hut, locked the doors, and began to read in peace and solitude. Oliver Twist DeWitt, the brilliant surgeon, has built a new hospital on the sunny banks of Lake lola Beach. Jimmy Ann Rhodes is the brilliant doctor's special brain surgeon. Marie Zacher is now the new Physical Education teacher at Pasco High. It is said that she keeps the hospital well supplied with patients. She must give them some workout. Frank Collura has now become a dentist, but it seems as though people are afraid to go to him because he owns half interest with Glen Adams in the Clop Clopper False Teeth Co. I see that Jack Dennis has finally become capable of a special skill. You can find his hand knitted booties, baby jackets, and bedspreads all over the country. His business has become so great that he has had to hire David Peacock as his new assistant, to teach his students the old knit one, purl two method. It seems that Telford Laurie has been confined to the hospital for the insane at Chattaho-chee. And just think, one small part in an operetta led him to believe he was Santa Claus. That isn’t all; Lawrence Burkhalter thinks that he is a reindeer. Looking on, I noticed that Joe Louis has finally met his match. Now our own John Heufel holds the title of Heavy Weight Champion of the World. Turning the page, I read that the magnificent tight wire artist, Louise Roland, made her debut doing hand springs on the tight wire across the Grand Canyon. With great shock and horror I read that the movie, Lak-Along-Hop-And-His-Last-Shot-of-BB's starring Gordon Larkin, has been banned from the screen by the Juvenile Delinquency authority, Jim Dew. It seems that Juvenile Delinquency has increased 99 per cent since the first showing of the picture. I see here too that Lela Jones has published her third book on Juvenile Delinquency. Her Publisher says that this one is the best of all. Turning the page, I read that Margie Childers is now the proud parent of the new and stylish store, Childers' Trading Post. Anna Olney is her clever designer. Upon reaching the society page, I see that the majestic team of Shirley Pugh and Carl Messick are surely going places with their new dance routine, The Slip Slop Slippery Shoe Slide. It says that Wayne Hodges will make his debut at Carnegie Hall, as a celebrated toe and balletdancer. As I turn the page, I see that Margaret Gals-ter is opening a new night club, The Stable Room, located at Fifty-Seventh Hit and Run Street. Howell Mickler's clarinet and orchestra are to appear nightly for three weeks. As a special attraction the major trio of Louise Campbell, Dorothy Brown, and Doris Anderson are appearing. Their specialty is Smoke On The Water. It says here that Elizabeth Burger has opened a new juke joint, The Slop Bucket just across from Geniveive Norman's new and modern Stork Club. They seem to be having quite a bit of competition. Soon this ad caught my eye: Is your mind blank when your wife asks, 'Where were you, whom were you with, and whose lipstick is on your collar?' Daniei Duggan and Alfred Whatley, Inc. tell you what to say to these questions, and they guarantee that no home will be broken up if you follow their method. In case your wife does not believe you, Charles Stahl and Bert Atwater are competent lawyers who handle divorce cases. Villa Mae Parker and Archie McKendree were forced to sell their shares in the famous dude ranch, the Pig Pen, to Pat Lee. Both Villa Mae and Archie have millions. Pat Lee didn't know that Anita Nathe had just opened a rifle range within shooting distance of the famous Pig Pen. Edna Earle Williams has just been granted her fourth divorce. She now writes stories about her past romances which are published in the magazine Love 'Em and Leave 'Em. There is a picture here in the paper of Eugene Holtzhower and Calvin Roberts, who have just arrived home after a long hunting trip in Africa. The main purpose of this trip was to bring back enough leopard skins to make a new wardrobe for Gene Carter, who is known as the strongest man in Pasco County. Sarah Bryant is now traveling with a carnival as the fat lady. There have certainly been some changes since high school days. Jimmy Holland has retired at the ripe old age of 27. He made his fortune matching pennies with Joe Weaver. Barbara Mahoney has landed a job at last. She holds the position of scrub woman at the new Dade City Hotel. Tommy Stevens, the heroic sheriff of Pasco County, has finally caught the notorious desperadoes, Richard Goldsby and Hank Mindack. They were the leaders of the mob who stole candy from babies. Fred Groover has opened a new factory. His main attractions are Buttons to Suit Your Personality. Ladonia Sullivan, Eva Carol Veach, and Eunice Durden have just returned from Europe where they gave lectures to the foreign students on their newly published book, It isn't the School, It's the Principal of the Thing. Boy this is news! ! Frances Etheridge has become a history teacher, and she says that she hates to see her pupils skip classes. It seems that Kenneth Thompson is the hero of the day. He dashed out in front of a truck to save one of Carolyn Sylvester's precious Alley cats. Carolyn is head of the Humane Society. Florence Black has gone into the termite business. She guarantees to get rid of all termites in two weeks. If not satisfied money and termites returned. I see where Verna Lee Scarbrough is running a little ad in the paper; it reads: Let me tell you how you can improve your looks, personality, cloths, etc. I quarantee results. As I come to the next article I see that it is about Delores Mann and Joy Voight. They are both secretaries for Rodney Copeland. Rodney 's in the louse-powder business. Turning over I see where Rev. Eli Mott Jack-son is running a two weeks revival meeting. He has Gertrude Harper and Roberta Beaver leading the singing. His main topic is Repent ye Seniors an'! win back your privileges. I see where Beverly Houdlette and Pat Jordon have just arrived in Washington. While there they wiil be hostess and co-hostess at the President's Ball. Yes, President Hudson (Jimmy Hudson, of course) is really doing good since he was elected. He has appointed Kenneth Burnsed as Ambassador to Trilby, St. Leo, and Lacoochee, Florida. After reading all of the news, I have decided that it would be best for me to stay here on my peaceful island and wait for more news from Dade City. B. HIGHLIGHTS OF 1948 FOOTBALL SEASON When it comes to naming the highlights of the 1948 season, it is really a hard job, because since we won all our games, they were all highlights on the part of the team. I will try to name some of the personal highlights handed in by the individual players. Mott Jackson's 92-yard kick-off return for a touchdown in the Tarpon Springs game. Jack Dennis' many long runs and his total of 126 points for the season. Billy Heads' and Barney Hallmans' numerous hard-driving line plunges that gained us a many first-in-tens. The drop-kicking handed in by Billy Brown. 19 out of 28. That's not a bad record. Lawrence Burkhalters' signal calling that threw the opposing team off guard many a time. Oliver DeWitts' offensive playing at center. The team could always count on him to get the ball to the right place at the right time. Wayne Hodges and Howell Micklers record at ends. Wayne got a scholarship to Florida for his performance. The wonderful defensive play turned in by Gordon Larkin and Dan Duggan. They were usually the fifth and sixth men in the opposing teams' backfield. The quick-thinking play turned in by Warren Edwards, Billy Sanderson and R. G. Hobby at tackle. The wonderful play turned in by the varsity substitutes. They were always ready to take up where the varsity left off. But none of this would have been possible without the aid of the coaches.
