We were also enthralled by a magician, a theatrical presentation from Mark Twain, and also a Russian evangelist, Hyman Appelman, who escaped from his homeland at the time of the 1917 Revolu- tion. He spoke for us to fight for democracy and to be Ratriotic. 'An excellent Mark Twain. Mr. Appelman came to uspmad the word to PHS. The Panthers played host to the top contender for the Alabama state championship, the Murphy Tigers. The Panther defense played a great game, but the offense seemed sluggish. Two interceptions deep in Pan- ther territory were returned for Murphy TDs. Murphy earned one TD, e Goula 0. ' The strongly favored Indians dared the Panthers to come' to their Homecoming. The Pan- thers growled and were off to beatiem. Goula scored first after a 49 yard run by James Wil- liams to set up a TD pass from Mike Davis to Maynard Dailey. Tommy Woodson stole a pass and raced for another TD. In the third quarter Ricky Kosman kicked a 23 yard field goal for the final score of the game. Outstanding defensive players were Thomas, Davis, Woodson, and Williams, who to- gether picked off five Biloxi pas- ses. Another upset Panthers, 15 ' Indians, 7. The Panthers had to win against Moss Point to have a winning season. The first three quarters were score- less as the Goula defense skinned the Tigers. Then things began to happen. Ricci Larsen punted out of the hole. Mike Davis picked off a pass at the Goula 28. With less than 4 minutes Jim Nyers con- nected with Don Law for 72 yards. TD! Goula. However, they made up for this deficiency in guts and good outside shooting. Against opponents other than Moss Point and Gulfport East, the Panthers went 13-5, while dropping all 8 contests against the bigger teams, and ended the season even at 13-13. It was the Panthers pride that succeeded in bringing about a satisfactory season in a year that could have been disastrous to PHS basketball. The one bright spot in this year1s team was John McMurray. Playing outside, John popped consistently throughhut the season. Although offi- cial records are not kept, it is most probable that John set school records in total points in one season, 515, highest average for one season, 19.8, and high point total for one game, 33. Because of his outstanding play this year, John was named to the All- South Big-8 and All-District 4 teams, and was named to play in the Missis- sippi Coaches Association All-Star Basketball Game, an outstanding achievement. .this year totaled 14 wins and losses. While this was thought t to win. . Under Coaches Bobby Cant and Jim Wallis, the Panther captured the District Crown, Next the Panthers defeated For- est Hill for the Regional Chama pionship. Choraliers present The Road Not Taken? SENIORS! I ntrospectz'on In my room I sit and watch the rugged world go by; I And wonder how it came to be, a man-made hell and why. ; The days drag on, the nights grow long, my rest can bring no peace; . For all I see, humanity, cries out for lifeIs release. T3 IIMy GodPI I cry, IIcan you be there, if life is living deathP, IIPerhaps Heis dead, as some have said, or sleeping? I suggest. My mind is shocked, my words are mocked, for no one can explain Why men must hate, and desecrate - and even curse the rain. I hear of war and see men march off to kill a friend They never saw his love of life, which they put to an end. Nor did they hear his cry of hear as life oozed from his veins. The scarlet stain, the scarring pain A what do they have to gain? I hear of IIloveII and run to see just what the world had found ' But IIloveI, is just a little dust and gratifying sounds. For love is not the ugly blot defined by some as love. v, -..- 3:51 ; armmumm: iv. .3 The boasting prayers, the sacred stairs, the murder of a dove : But love is more than man can see, or hear, or taste, or feel; I A man who lives, our Lord has said, forgives, and helps, and heals. I: Love is sure, the only cure, for cancers such as hate, E And some have shown - though God has known! - that love 1s heaven s gate. 5 A perfect love demands we give our life to free a soul, $1; For we can give, though we still live, and death 18 not our goal. 5; We wish to see all men set free, and one has gone before, I To live, and die that you and I taste love, and search for more. But if we must, then we can give our. very bodies, too; Remember Christ gave his own life and' died for me and you. And when we learn to fight and to spurn our selfish greed and pride, Then love will come to everyone, and God will be our guide. IIO dream? I cry, IIAnd nothing more A Oh God, forgive us all? And in my fear I feel a tear, and watch a sparrow tall. And down below in dirty snow she struggles where she lies, A man walks by, and hears her cry, walks on - and then she dies.
