At PHS the mathe- matics department otters a wide selection of courses ranging from refresher math to solid geometry. A continuous program of development is oliferecl, start- ing with elementary algebra and geometry, wherein the student learns the rudiments of mathematical man- ipulation and formal proof. Next in sequence are the more advanced courses, al- gebra and trigonometry. Advanced theory and some practical applications are taught here. Finally, at the top of the mathematical high school curriculum is solid geometry, a course that is offered only to seniors. This course starts with an explanation ot the intricacies of computation in the third dimension and progresses into elementary calculus by the end ot the year. Miss Joyce Williamson quizzes her algebra students here as iunior Rick Wyse shows why part of his equation can't be worked out. This combination offers the advantage of presentation ot American literature against its proper background ot hsitorical tradition, thus providing an inte- grated understanding of both. ln addition, the block program provides a means of com- munication with all members ot the Junior Class and a basis for the election of the mem- bers ot Rep Council and the transaction of that organizations business. The junior block also provides for a type of informal counseling and guidance which supplements the regular serv- ice. Mr. Neumann has trouble choosing from ci host of U.S. history volunteers. Ned Leavitt looks as though he can't believe the enthusiastic response. innummuvuwmw ilnsnmw mm fffa 11:11, Am

PHS also ofters a balanced program ot lite science. The department is di- vided into two sections: psysiology and botany. The purpose ot the course in botany is to provide a basic understanding ot plant biology which will later be useful in such fields as agricultural planning and horticul- tural research.
