When the Campus first decided to bring its readers Inside PHS, there was little disagreement among staff members as to what single item should be fea- tured. Their overwhelming choice was PEOPLE. Why People?-because it's People who give a school a Personality, and Pasadena High School has Plenty of both-People and Personality. People, after all, do come in assorted sizes, shapes, and kinds. We have big people, small people, thin people, stout people, intelligent . . . provocative . . , extraordinary . . , ordinary . . . wise . . , foolish . , . handsome . . . appealing People-and then some. What makes People exciting? lt must be their unique- ness--each one a different person-no two alike, and yet in most ways similar. ln what ways similar and in what ways different we have not tried to differentiate in the l958 Campus. Between these covers, we be- lieve we have captured that elusive ingredient that points up the distinctiveness of People Inside PHS. l-sn., 4 , f....J, f 1 n, i.2!ff V.J 'Q cw- 'mfg 'TM' S hglfifli A 1 X , i5,sghsfQf t Wg, 552 . , 51.11 i35?5?Y'aflE? N ,Qu sfQff.ffffv:: dedication Mrs. Jessie Chittenden must come very near to heading up the list of proud and distinctive People PHS calls its own. ln March of this year, Mrs. Chitten- den, who had served as assistant prin- cipal here since PHS' revival four years ago, moved across campus to the city college to perform counselor's duties. Jolly, talented, and hard-working, Mrs. C. seemed always available to students and teachers, and other fellow workers who constantly sought her ad- vice and warm friendship. In addition to her official duties, Mrs. Chittenden's artistic ability showed up in many more posters, banners, bul- letins, place cards, and in floral ar- rangements, table settings, and office decorations than full credit has ever allowed. Like everything else we take for granted, her presence at PHS was not fully appreciated until she took up her new tasks at PCC. Despite these new duties elsewhere, we still label you, Mrs. Chittenden, as being one of our very own-among PHS' grandest People. 7 gr bn. mu Rf. Both newcomers to the full-time counselor field this year, Mr. Six and Mrs, Nuetzmon took hold of their iobs early and quickly made lots of friends among their fellow teachers and iunior class students. A math teacher and coordinator of the iuniors' program, Mr. Six had the multiple duty of social affairs adviser, the eleventh grade class, and the counseling and testing program for stu- dents. O'Neill and Gunstream and Miss Abbott were faced with this year. Mr. O'Neill, the veteran of the team, served as coordinator for the twelfth grade. Straight-shooting and sympa- thetic, he was responsible for helping to arrange the Baccalaureate, the graduation itself, the senior prom, and caps and gowns. Moreover, he slated and attended all class council and cabinet meetings and nailed down his Senior Counselor-Coordinator half of the 800 plus seniors' program- ming. Miss Abbott and Mr. Gunstream represented a departure from the or- dinary this year as they traded teach- ing time for their counseling chores. As PHS' first teacher-counselors, it was unnecessary for them to put in over- time to convince others of their value -but they did anyway. Miss Abbott came out of the girls' Phys, Ed. depart- ment for her stint, while Mr. Gunstream left his botany lab for his counseling hours. Vex. Social affairs and fund-raising proiects captured the interests of both groups. A Father-Daughter banquet, themed Lads and Lassies and featuring Scottish tartans, and the annual fashion show, this year entitled Eastern Enchantment, took the lion's share of the Girl's League cabinets' time. On the masculine side, the fellows got to flex their muscles with a Car Smash Ithree swings with a sledgehammer for 25 centsl, and iudo demonstration in their assembly. Declared PHS Day by Pasadena's mayor, Seth Miller . . . it was a day set aside for the official ground breaking ceremonies for the new Pasadena High School at Victory Park. The festivities began at 2 p.m. with all PHS students attending in red and white. Members of the Board of Education were present, President Steve Salisian introducing them along with Pasadena supervisors, city directors, past board members, and other city luminaires. PHS's Principal Gladiss Edwards concluded the ceremonies by saluting faculty and students of PHS and by climbing aboard one of the two bulldozers and turn- ing over the first shovelsful of dirt. Spirit was the keyword of the 45-member Bulldog Band which, directed by Mr. Daniel Hiestand, gave a total of 84 performances during the year. Football games, assemblies, Open House, and Ground- breaking highlighted the Band agenda. Activities such as the Junior Rose Bowl Parade and the March Pops Concert added prestige to this hard-working group. With the main band as a nucleus, several other organiza- tions were formed. A Pep Band which played during bas- ketball season was an example, as were The Green Moun- tain Boys -a group of girls who initiated a fife, iug, and bottle band to play mountain music. Interested parents even began a Band Boosters Club to help gain community support for our band. Another important musical group was the Orchestra, com- posed of 35 students, and also under Mr. Hiestand's direc- tion. Following a program similar to the one outlined above, the Orchestra also participated in Music in May, the Spring Concert offering by both groups. -au.. The 84-member Choir performed on such memorable occasions as the i957 Christmas pageant and the May 9th Spring Concert, Oklahoma, ln addition to participating as a group in assemblies, at Open House, and in programs at iunior highs, the Choir had ambitious members who branched out on their own to entertain. One ofthe more popular groups formed in this manner was the Boys' Octet, headed by Sam Cortines. Sam also served as Choir president for the first semester, followed in the second term by Judy Ives. The Girls' and Boys' Glee, composed of 43 and 22 members, respec- tively, participated in activities parallel to those of the A Cappella. Heading the girls for the spring semester was Karen Peterson, while Richard Rudy occupied top position for the boys. The affair was designed to re-welcome PHS alums from classes of 1886 to 1957. Included in the festivities was a special Red and White Rally which featured prominent community speakers, the unfurling of the new Pasadena Bulldog ban- ner, and the surprise announcement of the Red and White Queen. Ginny Retting, a senior, was elected to reign from a group of four other campus coeds, Margie Bertelson, Dee Powers, Hilli lvask, and Barbara Thomas. The evening activities were highlighted by a neatly-timed victory game against the Burroughs' Indians, from which PHS emerged on the top half of the 14-O score. Back in September, an idea was born of one PHS senior as he sat on the steps of C building one day, listening to the typical high school sounds around him. These were sounds, Dave Berkus thought, that would never be heard again by his classmates or himself. With a germ of an idea, Proiect Record was initiated. Dave began work, recording every sound around campus that might, as he put it, be fun to hear again, lust once. By April, over 10,000 feet of tape had passed through the recorder, and more than 500 hours had been spent in planning, recording, and editing, Recorded by Custom Fidelity Records and pressed by Capitol Records, Proiect Record en- ables every loyal Bulldog to recall the sounds of 1957-58, years hence, by simply applying a phonograph needle to the high fidelity disc. On these pages are pictured, as they happened, some of the events that the grooves of Proi- ect Record have preserved in sound. Those three letters mean lnternational Geophys- ical Yearz a concentrated effort to learn more about the earth and related fields. As its name suggests, IGY is an international proiect that even PHS has had a hand in. By promoting an interest in science and math, we have, perhaps, added to our country's reserves of scientists. The Science Fair and Engineers' Contest gave students an opportunity to display proiects they had worked on during the year. Pasadena was well represented at the annual Chemistry and Physics exams by students enrolled in these classes. A number of clubs on campus, including the newly formed Rocket Club, have provided scientific stimuli for thos inter- ested. Perhaps providing the most incentive to excel in science and math was the Bausch-Lomb Optical award. This year, this top science trophy went to Senior Joel Horowitz. Joel was given the opportunity to fly to Rochester, New York, to compete for scholarships with thirty other seniors from all over the country. The Bank of America gave twelve seniors a chance to earn 51000 in competition with other seniors from the sur- rounding area. This year the math award was won by Sharon Reimers and the laboratory science award by Barbara Serrell. .V W.. .. Beginning on a sour note with a 14-6 loss to La Puente in the opener, the Red and White unit came back strong the following week to eke out a 12-O triumph over the Panthers of Rosemead High. But then the bottom seemed to 'fall out of their attack as they dropped four straight: the first to Compton's Tarbabes, 26-O, then to Chaffey, 26-12, Glendale, 20-O, and Hoover, 20-13. Things seemed to brighten up as the Foothill League race reached its halfway mark this year, for the varsiteers bagged two straight by dropping the Burroughs' Indians, 14-O, and the Bulldogs of Burbank, 14-6. But a week later, the Bulldogs closed their '58 season on a disappointing note with a 20-O loss to Muir. Numerous iniuries which plagued the Pasa- denans throughout the season told part of the story of the varsity losses, while lack of an ex- perienced forward wall accounted for another part of their 3-6 season. Bruising tackle Tom Stoffel was named third string All-CIF to cap the year. The undefeated JV clan started its triumphant march to the top officially by clob- bering Glendale, 32-13, after which they picked up another win through forfeiture by Hoover. The next to fall by the wayside was Burroughs, 39-12, then came Bur- bank, 21-13, with a final 26-O pasting inflicted on Muir's Mustangs. But the boys, under the capable guidance of Coach Hudson Scott, dished up an entertaining brand of basketball on almost every outing. Close games were practically a trademark with the Bull- dogs, who finished the Foothill League in fourth place with a mediocre 4-6 record. The club won nine of ld pre-league engagements, and included in this list was a 5l-AO win over the defending CIF champions from El Monte. In Foothill play the 'Dogs won their first two games and appeared headed for a fine finish, but four successive set- backs spelled the beginning of the end for the aspiring ath- letes. Three iuniors-Dan Garcia, Bill White, and Bob Olds-placed, providing the Bulldogs with a second and third on the side horse, respectively. Brightest spot for the Bulldogs was iunior Mel Hein, who broke his own 2-week-old school pole vault record of l3'3 by clearing l3'7 to cop the event. Polemen had been Pasa- dena's forte all season, with Bob Wells ll3'2 3!4 l and Dan Armstrong ll2'8 l backing up Hein. Other strong performers for PHS were 440-man Bruce Rogers, top point-getter all season and runner-up in the Foothill finals, Cliff Dozier, top 880 runner, who in the finals placed second, and Richard Woods, miler, who nabbed a third in the finals. Although he did not qualify for the finals, .lim Childs contributed the season's second-highest point total, scoring at various times in the broad iump, high hurdles, and 440. Over the Foothill season, the Bulldogs garnered only a sin- gle victory over Burroughs in five outings. Lack of sprinters was Pasadena's main weakness, costing points in the lO0, 200, and all-important relay, and meaning the difference between victory and defeat in several meets. Entering league competition, PHS had compiled a record of six wins, no losses, and a third at the El Monte Relays. 1 5 if , 1, . This is the way the Bulldogs' top vaulter Mel Hein dial it. What started off as a banner season for Coach Ron Robinson and his proteges suddenly took a turn for the worst in mid-year and deteriorated into some- thing less than mediocrity by May. However disappointing the won-lost record may have been, there were bright spots. Loren Jespersen and John Richmond, a pair of talented twirlers, shone brightly throughout most of the season but were victimized by some erratic fiielding in tight spots and took more than their fair share of setbacks. Jerry Sims divided his talents between relief chores and the outfield. Hitting, while not a prominent feature of the Pasadena attack, was displayed in fine fashion on several occasions. What avid follower of the diamond sport will ever forget Mike Daugherty's grand slam home run in a game with Burbank. Then there were Cal Sheets, Jack Lightbody, Jim Winn, Larry Henderson, Herm Vel- asquez and Jim Meadows, all of whom showed that they could pelt the sphere with a considerable degree of consistency, As for next year, Robinson has a good nucleus with which to mold a title contender. Richmond, Velasquez, Sheets, Meadows, Tom Parks, Chuck Rowins and Wendall Hunter are all iuniors, which makes the outlook for the future a happy one. Pre-season play failed to raise any eyebrows, as the Bulldogs stum- bled through their matches, but in league play, the Bulldogs turned out to be tigers, registering three wins over Hoover by 7-0, 6-1, and 7-0 scores and three wins over Burbank by scores of 4-3, 5-2, and 6-1. Muir High fell before the powerful racquetmen of PHS scores of 4-3, 6-1, and 6-1. Pasadena netters at deadline had dropped three league matches, one to Burroughs, 4-3, and two to Glendale, 5-2 and 4-3, but avenged both losses by massacring Burroughs, 7-0, in their second encounter and smashing Glendale 6-1. The Junior Varsity placed second in league standings behind Muir. Stars of the JV's were Dennis Hall, Jerry Raymond, and Mike Wasgatt.
