Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1978 volume:

Nos Memoires . . . Our Memories In Words And Pictures Of The Sights Sounds Images Impressions Patterns People Of Parsons High School September 1977 To June 1978 Parsons, West Virginia With common goals and common longings, we laughed, we loved, we played, we won. Those were our school days, the good ol' days. They were real be- cause we made them real. They were alive because we existed. 4 And then, as suddenly as they had dawn- ed, they had faded into the less carefree days of adulthood. And finally they are gone . . . those good ol' days in school. Around The Corner Are The Unknown Days Of Tomorrow. Who Knows The Future They Will Bring? s The lunch hour gave stu- dents a chance for conver- sation and relaxation. After school the freedom widened and PHS scattered from band practice to football games, from dates to meet- ings and from running around to home again. These were the good ol' days! Memories: Not soon forgotten Memories that Linger through Our laughter Joy and tears. Friends, Faces Images that are Treasured, Retained, Recollected. 8 Days; These summer, School-time days; Moments fleeting Into seconds; Gone forever These good ol'days. Look Not to yesterday But to tomorrow. For tomorrow is A new Beginning. 9 ft. trrp ibiH ‘V Being Together Memories light the corners Of my mind. Misty water-colored memories Of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the Smiles we left behind Smiles we gave to one another For the way we were. Memories may be beautiful. And yet. What's too painful to remember We simply choose to forget. So it's the laughter we will Remember. Whenever we remember the Way we were. The way we were. Can it be that it was so Simple then? Or has time rewritten Every line? If we had the chance to Do it all again. Tell me would we? Could we? As the hours of the day Pass into the hours of the Night Life continues . . . Bringing forth a need A need for accomplishment For recognition and for love Since no one can stop the Ebb and flow of life Or retrace their sometimes Faltering steps We continue . • . We hope that someday, Somewhere, someone Will profit from what We have given to life. Each of us at PUS will take with us from high school our dreams and ambitions. The world is new to us. It has much to offer, and PHS students have much to give in return. Now is the time to reach inside of ourselves, grasp hold of our dreams, and prepare to live them. Every opportunity in the world lies before us. Men orios of us in the making at PHS lie here behind us in the halls. Memories. Fond remembrances that are so very important in life. Hundreds of them cherished and loved, yet forgotten as time goes on. Friendships. Games. Com- petition. Plays. Learning exper- iences. Good times. Events of the year are recorded in this book to help you remember the key to memories. Seniors Speak Out. . . What Is Your Opinion Of The Quality Of Education At PHS? Patrick Joseph Ashby Kenneth Micheal Bohon Steven Jeffrey Booth Lois Rebecca Bright Mark Allen Bright Sarah Ruth Brock In my opinion, the classes I have taken during the six years I have attended PHS have been too easy. It was not that hard to make an A in any class. There is always an exception to ev- ery rule, and it is also true in this case. I can think of only five teachers I had that really put me to work. Their classes were always a challenge to me and I had to work hard to make a decent grade. 20 This is a very small per- centage, considering the number of teachers I had. Three of these teachers taught History, one taught English, and one taught Math. A lot of the teachers were much too lenient with their students. For example, if a teacher sets a deadline for an assignment, there should be no exceptions made except for those who are ill. I believe that the quality of education in Tucker County will improve once the two schools consolidate. The teachers will be able to stick to one set of rules rather than varying to meet the whims of those who are lazy. Another possible help will be the dam at Davis. The schools would receive revenue desperate- ly needed facilities and equipment Greg Hott Ida Darlene Brow Sharon Kay Carr Teresa Ann Close Walter John Connell Rick E. Corcoran Daniel Lee Dilly Seniors Speak Out . . . What Did The Co-Op Program Have To Offer That Regular Classes Didn’t? Ricky Allen Dumir e Eric Jack Elza Gregory Lynn Evans Rex Allen Eye Steven Dale Eye Mark Alanson Felton Being involved in the co-op program gives a student the opportunity to be placed in a job which you think you are interested in persueing as a vocation. You can de- cide whether that job is right for you before entering college or training for that field. It gives you the op- portunity to deal with pro- blems you may face as a contributor to the working society. Becky Nestor Dana L. Hockman The co-op program is an excellent program. It gives the person involved a chance to work with people and find out what kind of job they would be interested in when they get out of high school. It also gives the student preparation for college and their particular field of in- terest. You learn how to work co-operatively with people and how to take or- ders on the job. You also learn how to accept criti- cism. The program pre- pares you to talk intelligent- ly about your work and how to deal with the public Jon Mahoney 23 24 Seniors Speak Out . . . What Will Be Your Biggest Adjustment After Graduation? Susan L. Kelly Chris M. Kidwell Sondra J. Knicley Craig W. Knotts Robert A. Knotts Steve R. Knotts After school the biggest adjustment for me will be the fact that I'm really on my own. No longer will there always be someone to run to when I'm faced with a problem. I feel that I can handle it, but it will be a big adjustment. I think that the feeling of knowing that I can hold down a job, support my- self, and make my own de- cisions successfully will be one filled with a sense of accomplishment. Like a lot of kids my age I have some fears and res- ervations about the future, and I know I'll miss my friends and other things pertaining to school, but I'm glad that my chance for a future is so near. Jackie Irons After high school I plan to go on to college. I think the biggest change will be being on my own in unfam- iliar surroundings with strange people. In a situa- tion like this I will have to depend totally on my own opinions and judgements to make my decision. A- nother big challenge will be meeting new people and learning to adjust to their personalities and habits. However, the most diffi- cult adjustment will be to cope with the pressure to do something productive with my life and then go- ing out and actually doing it. James McDonald Robert E. Lantz Beverly A. Lawrence Hollis N. Lipscomb Jon Mahoney Lisa Ann Mauzy James W. McDonald Edith Darlene Myers Kimberlee A. Michael Diane P. Mick Rose Ann Miller Joann Arlane Morehead Joyce Ann Murray Seniors Speak Out . . . There Is A Definite Lack Of Support In Some School Organizations. Why Is This So? Most clubs don't have very many members due to the fact that the clubs never have any activities or do anything. Who wants to go to a club meeting that is so unorganized that you can barely hear the sponsor yell over the roar of every- body else? All the clubs collect dues, but for what? The members never get any benefit from them, organizations need to offer more activities. Carolyn Rosier 26 What Do You Think Of Teenage Marriages? A teenage marriage in my opinion, is fine if the two people involved are respon- sible enough to realize ev- erything marriage involves. They must understand each other and accept their dif- ferences. You must under- stand that you may do or say things which may hurt each other, yet willing to overlook petty arguments. You must learn to compro- mise and not expect every- thing to go your way. You should show your affection often. A marriage should last forever if you remem- ber these things. Eric Elza Becky Lynn Nester Deborah F. Nestor Geraldine Kay Nestor Ricky R. Nestor Sang Nguyen Paul Randolph Owens Michael D. Parsons Annalee Phillips Edward Gerald Phillips Jr. Darlene L. Pine Judy Darlene Pitzer Robin Elaine Plum Seniors Speak Out . . . What Do You Think About The Current Coal Strike? I feel that the coal miners don't have any foundation for holding out for a better contract. The one which was offered gave them a substantial raise in wages and better benefits. It seems the miners didn't like that one because they couldn't have wildcat strikes without being fined. These strikes are com- pletely unfounded and usu- ally never accomplish any- thing anyway. Many miners even feel that they have the right to force non-union mines to close. To the point of resorting to violence. James P. Poling Of course, it is the miners interest to stop all coal from being mined to put the pinch on the public. But we cannot let one group of workers put many states into a state of emergency every time their contract expires. If I were in charge, I'd send the national guard into all non-union mines which the miners were trying to close and force them to leave. They would guard the mines while the non- union miners would dig the coal. If they had to shoot a couple of them, maybe that would stop the rest. This would probably keep us going until summer, when we would be much less vulnerable. Mark Felton Barbara Alkire Shahan John David Shahan Winfred R. R. Shahan David William Simpson Vera Ann Sponaugle William George Stevens Has Television Had An Effect On Tucker County’s Crime Rate? Violence on television has risen steeply over the last five years or so, and it seems to me that the crime rate in tucker county has risen also. Tucker county is a fairly small place, and usually nothing goes on ex- cept petty rowdiness. But recently there has been a rash of really serious crimes. One of the crim- inals involved confessed his idea came from TV. So, I would have to say yes. Jim Poling Seniors Speak Out . . . Charles Brian Sturms Phyllis Ann Tacy Hancel J. Mr. Pollock Our team started out slow this year. Dur- Donnie McWilliamdtRB-SS) ing the first four games, our team was up 17 TD's; 116 total points 209 carries, and down. We tried to play a 6-2 and a 1407 yds., 6.73 avgdjs. per carry; He 5-3 defense, but were too small physically is the best high schodBKotball player tljgr to hold the other teams. On offense, we I have ever seen. Of the three years I have been at PHSjfETle best game was Parsons vs Northern JM| the one game that I will never orget W The 6th and 7th games were tough. We had to play big teams with fast backs. We won these two games, becausfe e wanted to win more than they did. At the 8th game with Petersburg, the boys knew they were a good team, and we were a good team! At this point of the season, we could have played with anyone in the state. We won our final two games to finish 8-2, one tenth of a point from the state playoffs. Annie Felton played her best game with 16 pts and many exciting steals. In front of hometown fans, the fe- male cagers revenged an earlier loss to a strong Petersburg team despite furious fourth quarter rally. Judy Pitzer led all scorers with 20 pts. Kathy Carr had 5 pts and 15 rebounds. The girls made it through the sec- tional tournaments easily with Pitzer averaging 25 pts in the two games and Kathy Carr grabbing an average Louanna Bava also played well in the tournaments as she had the whole season. In the losing effort to University High in the regionals, Louanna fired in 21 pts. Other outstanding con- tributions were made by Teresa McDonald, who played fine defense, Annie Felton, who im- proved as the season went on, and Jenny Klein, who had the task of filling all positions. 1st Row L to R: Tim Henderson, Mark Jones, Bill Holler, Greg Hott, Jim Poling 2nd Row L to R: Rick Corcorran, Mark Freeman, Kevin Turner, Dave Stevens, Jim McDon- ald, Coach Neil Gutshall. It looked like chicken scratch The other students, all of whom received B's or C s on their first assignments, said most of the teachers' corrections included run-on sentences, poor phrasing, repetition and incorrect spelling RESEARCH PAPERS, often used by profes- sors in place of an exam grade or for a grade weighing heavily on their final grades, also presented problems for the students as fresh- men. Aretha Grant. 19. a graduate ol St. Albans High School, said she wasn't required to write a term paper the entire four years of high school. The only thing I could do was ask the professor some basic questions The rest I had to find out from my friends. Miss Grant said Cathy Gibeact. 18. a graduate of Nitro High School who has been an A student during her first year at WYSC said that although she was assigned term papers all four years ol high school, she still faced obstacles when doing research All of the students agreed that high school teachers should assign term papers dur ing either the second ot third year in order to prepare the graduates tor college assignments While Othello Washington. 20. a graduate oi Dunbar High School said 5 percent of his high school teachers were good Miss Gibeact gave the highest rating of 20 percent. 1 think the teachers are reluctant to teach their capacity. Wandling said. One ol my teachers was out running up and down the halls during class hours instead of being in the class room Most teachers are too easv on the kids How can students learn without superv ision” ' WHEN ASKED how they thought high school teachers could be improved, the students said they felt there was not enough concern or dedication on the teacher's part All agreed that their own performance and interest in the ctas- was heavily influenced by the teacher s attitude I tried a few times to ask for extra instruction and help from some teachers in school and they said they didn't have the time. Miss Grant said. Paul Tyree. 19. a graduate ot St. Albans High School, said teacher evaluations, now u.-ed in many colleges and universities, might be an alternative method of ferreting out ineffective teachers in high schools. “The teachei s job is to get the student interested and they should do what they can to teach that particular subject Tvree said. 168 Top Left: Kathy Wolford Typing Top Right: Carol Roy Social Studies Bottom Left: Neil Gutshall Phys.
