What, then, could be a better theme? Memories are often all you have left in the years after you leave high school. As you are preparing to go on in life, take this book with you, and as you go through it, say to yourself: will I recall the good times of shared laughter that came from such simple things as having a coke or enjoying the fresh spring sun? Was I alone or was I a real pan of the memories at Parsons High School? Do you think you established any meaningful relationships, or was the year a total loss? Think about it, and then think, what will 1 REALLY remember? Or will the experiences we shared be lost forever with the closing of a book, never to be of benefit to me in a more serious later life? s Did I express myself to the fullest extent and yet keep an open mind which welcomed the thoughts and opinions of others? ! 7 Will I recall the good times of shared laughter that came from such simple things as having a coke, or enjoying the fresh Spring sun? Was I alone or was I a real part of them? What will I remember? Administration sf‘ “Ours is the only country deliberately founded on a good idea.” John Gunther Board Of Education LEFT TO RIGHT: James Phillips; Patrica Michael, president: Don Carr, superintendent; Edward Kepner; Ronald Hel- mick; and Ronald Knotts. Superintendent The Board of Education meets several times a month to make important decisions on things of importance to the schools of Tucker County. 10 Don H. Carr Principal’s Message GETTING ALONG There are about four billion people in this world. That is a lot of people; and each of them has feelings that are just as imponant to him as yours are to you. You don’t like to have your feelings him. But how can you expect others to be careful of your feelings unless you show a little respect for theirs? To remember how other people feel and to be consider- ate of their feelings is one of the hardest things we have to learn. Learning to consider other people's feelings is very important in making and keeping friends. It is imponant in other things, too. What- ever you want to be - a businessman, doctor, law- yer, teacher, or almost anything else. You will be more successful if you know how to get along smoothly with people, without hurting their feel- ings. - Better yet - Read and practice Ephesians 6:10-12, n Assistant Principal Boy, it’s been a long day. Mr. Moore, more commonly known as Coach has been the assistant principal at PHS for three years. His duties vary from MR. HOWARD D. MOORE writing excuses to making change, helping in the lunchroom, and relieving Mr. Swank on different occasions. Secretary i? Mrs. Mason's duties are very interest- ing throughout the day as she aids stu- dents in locating Mr. Swank, making change, and answering the telephone. She also keeps records of all the stu- dents at PHS. MRS. These will be with us as we enter the unknown world outside. This yearbook is a flashback of your precious years of working and playing together. We hope that you will enjoy this yearbook and your stay at PHS as we have. The Freshman Class with its 82 members was the smallest ninth grade group in ten years. They elected officers as follows: President: Jack Hockman; Vice-President: Susan Pase: Secretary: David Strawderman; Trea- surer: Tom Felton. Class sponsors were Mrs. Bertie Rennix (chairman), Mrs. Hazel Bennett, Mr. William Tomanek, and Mr. Neil Gutshall. The Class of 1974 increased over the summer months as it returned with a population of 95 members. They started making money for their prom and banquet by selling candy atijr. -Hi. ball games. Class officers were selected as follows: President: Gina Swisher; Vice-President: Jack Hockman; Secretary: David Strawderman; Treasurer: Risha Roy. Class sponsors were Miss Sylvia Duda, Mrs. Hazel Bennett, Mr. Neil Gutshall, and Mr. William Tomanek. Although the class decreased in size, they still worked hard trying to raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom. The 79 members of the class sold Christmas cards, football programs, and ran the traditional candy store. Officers for the year were as follows: President: Marlena Booth; Vice-President: Chuck Hymes; Secretary: Roxanne Roberts; Treasurer: Judy Poling. Sponsors were Mr. Neil Gutshall, Mrs. Hazel Bennett, Mrs. Carol Roy, and Mr. William Tomanek. Still going strong, the Class of '74 is at it again. The 62 members held bake sales, had a dance, and sold programs at football games to help raise money for a senior trip. Class officers were predominately male. Pres- ident: Tom Felton; Vice-President: Chuck Hymes; Secretary: George Rhoades; Treasurer; Roxanne Nestor. Sponsors were as follows: Mr. Neil Gutshall, Mrs. Carol Roy, Mr. Charles Lloyd, and Mrs. Londa Rigney. The Senior Class wishes to thank Mr. Neil Gutshall for remaining faithful to the Class of 1974. He is the only sponsor who stuck out the four years as class sponsor. Freshmen ’71 Sophomores ’72 Juniors ’73 Seniors 31 2 '% 0 You’ve Come A -e — M. G. 'Baby of Class” ■3 B. S. Throughout the years at P.H.S., students have gone to him with their troubles, taken his advice, and just generally thought of him as a person to go to in time of need. We, the students of Parsons High School, wish to thank Neil Gutshall for all he's done for us, and for just being himself. 86 ISLANDS M MilANAs MANHs n 111III mWWOJIMAOUNAWA k KOREA 1950 KNEELING: (L. toR.)J. Dennis Jack Jerome 90 . . . Forever. . . What my years as a Panther meant to me Football was indeed the highlight of my high school years. It's hard to believe that I may never put on football equipment again in my life. During these last four years by playing football I've experienced many rough times but also many great ones. I also learned that nobody is better than you as you have the desire to prove they are not. I hope that all the DENNIS BOZIC ot er 8uys that play will have as much pleasure as I had. Playing football at P.H.S. consumed a lot of time. But every one of us would do it again, every one of us wish that we could do it again. But, it's over now, all that is left is our memories of our teammates, coaches, and FANS. Football left me with self-confidence, discipline, and especially PRIDE. No one knows the feeling you get in your uniform while ,. .. V, the band plays the school song. P.H.S. - Nothing but . . . JACK HOCKMAN First of all, football meant to me playing together as a team. When you play together as a team you win. And secondly, it meant pride. When I played for the old PURPLE AND GOLD and we lost I felt I let the whole school down. But when we won it was a thrill to know you won, especially for P. H. S. JEROME DiBACCO In the last four years of football I found that it was a hard, tough sport which I grew more fond of as I went on. It has helped teach me discipline in a new way. If ever there were memories, it will be the victory and defeat of football games played for the school I loved and will always remember. PRESTON SIMMONS H BUTCH LONG Playing football throughout my four years at Parsons High was the most fun I’ve ever had. Being able to hit people and having the home fans back us up meant a lot. To be able to appreciate football you have to play it. And when you're hurt you appreciate it even more because you want to play but can't. And all the rest of the seniors who played are a great bunch of guys. Football at P.H.S. means a kind of thrill that only a player who has played can feel. For some people it's a way of living but for me it was a way of growing up. And even if records didn’t show it, we always had dedication and spirit. We always tried - and it paid off. I will always have a deep affection for P. H. S. And for the future teams all I can say is good luck and never let the best team in the state down. CHUCK HYMES Football meant a lot to me. It meant working all week together to try and beat another opponent. It meant getting physically and mentally ready to work together for a common cause. This year I played football with a really great bunch of guys, and this I wouldn't trade for anything else. DAN JUDY Remembering we did it all together . . . 91 Juniors 1st ROW: G. Gutshall, S. The starting team now is made up with three seniors and two juniors, with four seniors filling in when necessary. The team has been working hard and is improving with each game. We have to cut out the simple mistakes that turn over the ball without a shot. By the time the tournament rolls around the first week of March, we hope to be a sound ball club. The teams in our tournament are larger than our team so we will have to play better to compete with them. We have a dedicated group of boys and with a lot of hard work and a little more leadership from the older boys we could have a successful year. I know with a lot more hustle and desire we can be a better ball club. Panther Seniors JIM SUMMERFIELD PRESTON SIMMONS BUTCH LONG BOB BODKINS 102 FIRST ROW: J. Summerfield, D. Kyle, G. Gutshall, B.
