Through trials and tribulations THE PANTHER was finally com- pleted. Ov-EAtfvlS We editors have had a fine staff to work with this year. If memories are cherished be- cause of the 1964-65 Panther, we have reached our goals. Full realization of the entire school and its activities comes into sight as one toils at such a job as editor. Our most prominent hope is to please you. Don't forget those chairs must be moved back in place before you leave the room! 5 MISS GRACE BRIGHT MISS MARIE UPSCOMB In the picture below, Miss Lipscomb is clean- ing the snow from her walk. As you can easily see, she is getting plenty of help from her dog. It is a little too snowy for golf, one of her fa- vorite pastimes. No longer at PHS but missed and fondly remembered are Miss Grace Bright and Miss Marie Lipscomb, two Junior High teachers who gave the students of Tucker County more than a combined 80 years of dedi- cated service. Both gave of themselves to the unselfishly bet- terment of PHS'ers regardless of size, shapes, or in- tellects. The value of their careful guidance and counseling to those entering this school for the first time is immeasurable. Miss Lipscomb's sparkle and wit has enlivened many a science class, as well as endeared her to the students and faculty. Thorough instruction in her social classes was one of Miss Bright's trade marks. The high Christian and moral principles she always held up before her students will stand as a memorial to her teaching career. Miss Bright has turned seamstress and is shown mak- ing a dress on her new machine. In acquiring the new pastime, she has a very able teacher, her ninety-four year-old mother. Man through the ages, has seeked to further his knowledge, or to develop a certain skill, which in turn would better his life. Everyone who possibly could, should further their education through college, but everyone canât. Instead we have vocational schools and other schools of instruction. When we finish our institutional training, our education is not complete because education is a life-long task. Boo tfL 0h' GduCOtiOlv 8 (L. to R.) Lawrence Losh; H. A. Meyers; Miss Eloise Bergstrom; Mrs. June Ann Carr, Secretary; Mrs. Louise Lilienfeld; Harold Parsons, Director of Attendance; Stelman Harper, Superintendent; and William P. Minear. (Not Pictured - Delton Mullennax.) TO THE STUDENTS OF PHS: Pioi X|DdjE 's Wgs$(xcj The greatest satisfaction in life is not in getting ahead of others, but in getting ahead of ourselves. It comes from breaking records, from doing something better today than we were able to do it yesterday. Try- ing to get ahead of others is a mistake, which often leads to envy from failure or conceit from success. In trying to outdo ourselves we have nothing to lose, and a world of satisfaction to gain. There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that is your own self. So you have to begin there, not outside, not on other people. That comes afterward, when youâve worked on your own comer. Best of luck to all of you. Earl Sines, Principal PARSONS HIGH SCHOOL Mrs. Sandra Hedrick Sherman, a former graduate of PHS with the Class of 1960, is the present school sec- retary. Training for this job was acquired in her busi- ness courses in high school. She has worked as secretary to the Circuit Clerk of Tucker County and in a hospital office. Her main interests, however, are found in her fam- ily. Phil, and Little Philâ occupy most of her time. Commercial education provides varied job prep- arations. As the students learn the fundamentals of business and office life, they are laying the founda- tions for their future vocations. BERTIE RENNIX JIMMIE McCLAIN B.S. - W. Va. The Panthers quickly came back on a quick pass to L. Filler for 19 yards. The defense held the Indians on the next four downs and quickly the Panthers score on a 99-yard drive with S. Delaney scoring on a 15-yard pass. The Panthers held a 13-7 lead at half-time. The Indians went ahead to lead 14-13, but the Panthers scored on another pass, this time to J. Roy to lead 19-14. The starting enrollment stood at 100. Freshmen officers were Inez Swartz1, Susie Wil- fong2, Donna Goss'1, and Patti Jo Burner4. Members of the Class Council were Patty Haddix, Jerri Bodkin, Sheryl Lipscomb, Connie McCrum, Jan Simmons, and Deanna King. S. C. representatives were Inez Swartz, Robert Rightmire, Patty Armentrout, and Joe Gilmore. The sponsors were Mrs. Bright, Mrs. Rightmire, Mr. Henry, and Mr. Parsons, who was later replaced by Mr. Kopnski. The class chose Connie McCrum as Homecoming princess and Linda Delaney as Class Cheerleader. Linda Delaney and Carl Hedrick were chosen as Class Favorites. JiuOa â63 and '64 âBanquet YeaV The 91 returning Juniors realized the need for raising money for the Junior-Senior Banquet and real- ly started working. As usual, they had the pop and candy machines; Christmas corsages were sold and the class had a Talent Show . On May the 11th they held their banquet at Blackwater Lodge in a set- ting of Apple Blossom Time with Robert Shaffer as Master of Ceremonies. Officers this year were Robert Shaffer1, Inez Swartz2, Deanna King3, and Alana Wilfong4. S.C. representatives were Susie Wilfong, Patty Armentrout, Richard Poling, and Larry Filler. Losing all our spon- sors but Mrs. Rightmire, three new ones were ac- quiredâMiss Howell, Mr. Barb, and Mr. Broschart. Deanna King was Homecoming princess and Carol Bolyard was Class Cheerleader. Deanna King and Robert Shaffer were chosen as Class Favorites . Mary Hamby, Sharon Vanscoy, Inez Swartz, De- anna King, and Robert Shaffer were elected to be National Honor Society Members. Inez Swartz and Robert Shaffer were chosen as representatives to both Boysâ State and Girlsâ State and Know-Your-State-Govemment Day. The 100 Sophs who returned this year were deter- mined to fill their empty treasury, so they had Sat- urday candy sales and sold name tags. Officers this year were Mary Hamby1, Richard Poling2, Susie Wilfong3, and Jerri Bodkin. Teresa Bolyard, Danny Fridley, Carl Hedrick, Patty Haddix, Larry Nichols, and Faith Roy were our Class Council members. They elected Patty Armentrout, Patty Haddix, Inez Swartz, and Larry Nichols to be our S. C. members. Sponsors remained the same except for the loss of Mr. Kopnski from resigning. Our Homecoming princess was Linda Delaney and Danny Fridley was Class Cheerleader. Once again, Linda Delaney and Carl Hedrick were chosen as Class Favorites. Although the enrollment now stands at 84, it is somewhat above average in size for P. H. S. senior classes. Senior officers are Joe Gilmore1, Larry Nichols2, A 4 Deanna KingJ, and Alana Wilfong . S. C. representa- tives are Patty Armentrout, Larry Nichols, Mary Hamby, and Inez Swartz. Class sponsors are Mrs. Rightmire, Mr. Barb, Mrs. Mullenax, and Mr. Ashby.
