Before long, you will join the ranks of the graduates of Parsons High School. Just as other alumni, some of you will get Jobs, and others in a short time will be getting married. It is hoped that the goal of all of you is to make your lives as much of a success as possible. There might be a few of your number who will attain fame, which is as some wise person put it, chiefly a matter of dying at the right moment, and undoubtly there will be some of you who will eventually become wealthy. But whether fame or fortune blesses the highway of your lives or whether you live in obscurity and poverty, you can, in any walk of life, become good citizens. We hope that your four years in Parsons High have given you the foundation for this achievement. Keep your heads. Don’t follow any leader too quickly, his programs and programs and promises. Beware of those who promise you everything for they may deliver nothing and don’t forget your high school sportsmanship in all the years to oome. Good Luck! Maurice M. Freeman, Principal. Salem College CLASS OF 50 And step by step since time began I see the steady gain of man; Back in the year of 1946, we the Seniors of today started our long journey on the winding road to a higher education. Our class was the largest class in the school with one hundred and twenty-eight students. We were just plain ordinary Freshmen looking for the day when we would be out of school and into the things we wished to follow. Thirty nine per-cent of the students who started out with us did not make the winding road to a high school educa- tion. From that sixty one per cent that did climb that road to higher education many of them may prove to become our best citizens. We were a quiet class, but had plenty of vigor which made us climb upward. The Red Rose was selected as our class flower and our colors were red and white. Success Awaits at Labor’s Gate was our motto. Of the one hundred twenty-eight members'thirty boys belonged to the Future Farmers of America. Ten girls belonged to the Glee Club and an average of five members made the honor roll for that year. We were represented by Bill Patch, Raymond Wilson, and Jack Parsons on the football team. When time for basketball came, Bill Patch, Bob White, and Don Good reported and made the reserve team. Officers elected for that year was President; Bill Patch; Vice President, Don Good; Secretary, Shirley Ann Barton; Treasurer, Samuel Lipscomb; Reporter, Polly Propst; and Cheerleader, Majorie Mickey Swearingen, our Sponsor was Mr. Fred Butcher. When Track started we found that Bill Patch, Don Good, and Raymond Wilson were on the team. Although we lost the class Track to the Sophomores, it was by a very close score, which made us feel good as we almost had a taste of victory Near the end of school we had a picnic at Horseshoe, which everyone liked very much. m When we returned in our Sophomore year only ninety nine members returned. New officers were installed in the first week of school and were: President, Don Good; Vice President, Bill Patch; Secretary, Polly Propst; Treasurer, Harold Bible; Reporter, Mary Jo Langland; and Cheerleader, Majorie Mickey” Swearingen. Our Sponsors were Mrs. John Kee and Mr. Fred Butcher. Mrs. Kee became a Faculty mem- ber in our Sophomore year and was elected as our other sponsor. Thirteen girls belonged to the Glee Club. The Drama Club carried Mary Jo Langland, Susie Vachon, Majorie Swearingen, Doris Roberts, Anna Jean Woodham, and Retha Kinble. Gladys Robinson, Susie Vachon, Doris Roberts, Georgie Watring, Mary Alice Miller, Anna Jean Woodham, and Majorie Swearingen were members of the TRI-HI-Y. The HI-Y iniated Raymond W'ilson, Bob White, Jack Parsons, Jim Felton, and Joe Moore into their organization. Eighteen boys belonged to the Future Farmers of America. Frank Smith and Leon Kelly won the Pure Bred Hampshire Pigs which were off- ered by local business men. In the Sophomore year more interest was shown in sports and more victories were won. Raymond Wilson, Bob White, Jim Felton, Jackie Mullennax, Bill Patch, Vernon Parsons, and Don Roberts played football. The Basketball team carried Don Good, Bill Patch, Jim Felton, Bob White, Theron Stemple, and John Shannon. Don Roberts, Kenny Barr, Raymond Wilson, Don Good, and Bill Patch went out for Track and four of them won their letters. The Sophomore boys won the class Basket- ball tournament and placed Don Good and Bill Patch on the all tournament team. Our girls team was beaten, but placed Velma Shahan on the all tournament team. Softball time rolled around and the Sophomore boys walked away with the championship while the girls won the girls title. We had a picnic at the end of school at Horseshoe. Soon our Junior year rolled around and we found that we had more responsibilitea and troubles. The officers that were elected were: President Don Good; Vice President, Don Roberts; Secretary, Shirley Ann Barton; Treasurer, Joe Moore; Reporter, Anna Jean Woodham; Song Leader, Mary Alice Miller; and Cheerleader, Majorie Mickey Swearingen. Mrs. Kee and Mr. Butcher were our Sponsors. Shortely after school started we opened the pop stand, of which the proceeds were used to put on the Junior Senior Banquet. This made several members of the class a lot of work, but we finally made it. When the first football game came along we found that the Junior Class was represented by Raymond Wilson, Bob White, James Felton, Don Good, Jack Mullennex, Bill Patch, Johnny Hovatter, Joe Moore, Theron Stemple, Kenny Barr, and manager, Vernon Parsons. We found that only eighty-five of the members of the class returned for their Junior year, but this eighty-five made up for the lost ones. Those who belonged to the Drama Club were: Lorene Philips Joe Moore, Carol Parsons, Joan Summerville, Bob White, and Harold Bible. The Glee Club was represented by eighteen members. The TRI-HI-Y members were: Majorie Swearingen, Gladys Robinson, Shirley Ann Barton, Alice Fanknouser, Mary Alice Miller, Georgia Watring, Retha Kimble, Anna Jean Wood- ham, and Doris Roberts. Twelve Junior belonged to the HI-Y, they were: Jack Mullennex, Don Roberts, Lane Spessert, Don Good, Bob White, James Felton, Kenny Jones, David Cosner Joe Moore, Berlin Sponaugle, Ron Good, and Frand Smith. Four Students were elected into the National Honor Society from the Junior Class, they were: Anna Jean Woodham, Don Roberts, Mary Alice Miller, and Don Good. Those belonging to the All Letter Club were: Bob White, Kenny Barr, James Felton, Jack Mullennex, and Bill Patch. Eighteen boys belonged to the Future Farmers of America. In December Basketball started and the varsity squad carried Don Good, Bob White, James Felton, and Bill Patch. The reserves car- ried Theron Stemple, Jack Mullennex, Ron Good, and Vernon Parsons. The class sold Christmas cards to make more money for the banquet. One day we received our class rings and were very well pleased with them. Soon Spring rolled around and it was time for Track and softball. Those out for track were: Kenny Barr, Tru- man Philips, Don Good, Theron Stemple, Bill Patch, and Kenny Jones. For the second year in a row the class boys and girls won the softball tournaments. The track class meet was held on April 26 and the Juniors won it with ease over the Seniors. On May 26, 1949 Anna Jean Woodham and Don Good were awarded the River City Club Courtesy Awards. Summer quickly passed and we became Seniors before we hardly realized it. Seventy-eight students returned to finish their last year at Parsons High. The officers that were elected were: President, Don Good; Vice President, Bob White; Secretary, Shirley Ann Barton; Treasurer, Ray- mond Wilson; Reporter, Berlin Sponaugle; Historian, Doris Roberts Smith; and Cheerleader, Majorie Swearingen. The Seniors were wdll represented in football as there were nine of the first eleven Seniors. They were: Bob White, Johnny Hovatter, Jim Felton, Raymond Wilson, Jack Mullennex, Don Good, Bill Patch, Don Roberts, and Kenny Barr. Berlin Sponaugle, Joe Moore, Alan Fansler, Theron Stemple, Dennis Bonner, Leon Kelly, and Vernon Parsons, also played foot- ball. On November 11th the Seniors were invited to attend Senior Day at Davis Elkins College. Approximately sixty of the class attended this College. Several members of the class took part in the WDNE Quiz program, they were: Joe Moore, Anna Jean Woodham, Mary Virginia Lewis, Don Good, Bob White, Mary Loughry, Donna Wingfield and Lane Spessert. Mary Virginia Lewis won the right to take part in the finals of the Quiz Program. The winner will receive a four year scholarship at D E. In November Mr. Von Haven came and took our pictures. We ordered our calling cards and received them in a few days. The class decided to order red T shirts and white hats for senior week. We ordered our announcements from Jostens, which we received in March. Mary Virginia Lewis was elected D A R Pilgrim and won over the rest of the schools in West Virginia. She was the first one from Parsons High to win it. The National Honor Society Tests were given to the three highest in the class and were Anna Jean Woodham, Mary Virginia Lewis, and Don Good. The class agreed to buy silverware for their present to the school. Eighteen dozen knives forks and spoons were ordered to be used for banquets in the future. Anna Jean Woodham was selected to take the Secretarial test at the Mountain State College on May 13, 1950. Seventeen boys belonged to the Future Farmers of America. Item: Our dignity to the Juniors. May they uphold it forever as we have. Last comes the onething hard for us to part with. So our succes:'0 3 we must leave our places in the hearts and thoughts of our teachers. Besides these enforced gifts we leave not of necessity, but of our own free will-our blessing, tender memories of our for- giveness for anything that we may not have exactly appreciated in the demonstration of the past, and a pledge of friendship forever. All the rest and residence of our property(after paying our debt and funeral expenses,we give to our beloved principal for his u to be disposed of as he may sec fit. In witness whereby we, the class of 1950, the testators, have to this our will set our hands and seal this April day, one thousand nine hundred and fifty. THE CLASS OF 1950 PRESENTS THEIR PROFHECY Listen, 0 ye men and women, youths and maidens, and little children! Listen, all ye people of Parsons, to the words of wldsom from the lips of your prophet, who now speaketh unto you what hath been revealed unto her, even as it hath been decreed by the power that be. For it has come to pass that the veil of the future hath been rent in twain even as it was so rent in the days of the wise prophets of old, and the Spirit of Prophecy hath decended from the spheres to envelop my soul with her myjestic power. Aye, I say unto you, men and women, youths and maiden, and little children of Parsons. It hath been given unto me as the chosen one of this great and good people, the Class of 1950, t dream strange dreams, and to see strange visions of the glories of the years yet to be. Now it so happened when it was decreed that the future of the Class of 1950 was to be given unto the hands of this, your prophet, to do with even as she listed, that she cried out in a loud voice of lamentation, saying, Who am I that the future of this great and glorious class should depend on me? What am I that the fate of these most fair and beautiful of damsels, and these most sturdy, noble, and manly of youths, should rest upon the decision of one so humble of intellect, and so infirm of purpose? But behold! Even as the cry of weakness did ascent from the long- suffering soul of your prophets, a voice from the heavens spake unto her, even in the words of old, saying, Hear now my words, If there be a propheW among you, I will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream, and straightway, from the clouds of the centuries gone, and from rhe shadows already cast before by the coming events of the proverb, there appeared unto her the fair and lovely Spirit of the Prophecy, the angel ef Things to Come, and le . she did with myestio touch roll back the curtain of the dim beyond the long vista of things yet to be, that I might behold all things that are, nttansformed into all things that are and they shall yet be- come even as it was so granted to the wise men of the past. And lo! as she drew back the curtain she pointed with a long, transparent finger down the avenues of a strange land, and opened her lips and spake unto me, saying: Look! Listen! Propheoy unto the young men and voung women of Parsons High School even these things which you herein behold. So, even as St. John, the divine, said unto the world, so 1, your prophet of the class of 1950, do say unto the people of this audience, in this twentieth cantury, Blessed be she that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein; for the time is at hand! for as I looked into the land of the future l could disoern moving Ofliong the dim shadows of the peoples yet to be, the familiar shapes of those fair and radiant beings who were once my classmates, now changed and transformed into citizens of the world outsides, even as they had long hopeu so to be. And it came to pass that the veil before mine eyes grew yet more and more thin through the intensity of my vision, and behold I could see them, even as if the intervening years were not at all. I could see our beloved President. Yes, even as today, I could see him in all his dignity and majestic living and his words were riched by that day and generation even as today of the class of 1950 have heeded and attended into them; for his ambition has led him ever upward and onward until he was even the Govenor of our very own and native sta to. mB And again, and as I again I could see maong the society circles of that far-off distant time, and among those who were most fair to look upon, among even those most bright and dazzling to the sight and to the mind, three, whom, even as I gazed, 1 recognized as those rival beauties who strove for the beauty Prize in old 1950. And it came to pass that 1 also looked into professional circles, and in a large office among many men of many minds sat a prosperous lawyer, the boy who in our High School days had not yet learned to lie Nay, not even on the right side would Harry say a word that could be uniruly interpreted. Thus are the mighty brought to lower planes 1 1 also happened to find myself on the Inside of a larger cathedral where a stately priest in his robes of dignity poured forth words of insp- ired instruction. Verily, it was Richard himself, who had thus entered into the word of the church And it came to pass, while l pondered these things in my heart, the door of a home swung open before my vision, and l found therein a house- hold made happy by a wife and mother who had found her greatest ambition in the highest of all wordely vacations--the maker and keeper of the home. Verily was my soul rejoiced there as I gazed my last upon many and followed my spirit of prophecy further and its quest of the Things to be. And it came to pass even as 1 watched the home lights die anon, that sweet strain of music held my soul intranced be the beauty and perfection of their harmonies and as I looked about to know whence they came, behold I did find, even as the queen of the world I dd find the same one who held so often played the marches for us in High School. And 1 felt myself failing into live and keeping step with her mortial airs. And behold, a change came over the spirit of my dream,! felt within my heart a strange, burning desire to see my old chums, Alice, and Mickey, tell the spirit of Prophecy, responding to my unspoken word, conducted me to a bachelor girl apartment in a large foreign city where the two sat by a fireplace talking of the past. Alice, now a famous violine8t, was calling forth sweet strains from her instrument, while Mickey danced a gig In delightful time to the music, her figure swaying from side to side, at the appeal of the fantastic air. Verily, was my heart stirred within me as I saw the vacant chair and noted their frequent anxious gladness toward the doorway for the coming of their propheoltles to complete the charmed circle. And verily, As I beheld the scene and marveled there at, thinking, only, even so shall it strain came to pass with each and all of us, to the strains of music died away, the veil was drawn over mine eyes, shutton out from vision the Things that are, sure that or, coming events cast their shadows before, only, goodness, and truth and prosperity shall follow all the days that are to follow to the fair and talented members of the olass of 1950.
