Dexter, we dedicate the 1947 Peira, as a token of our thanlgs for her inspiration and friendship at Parsons College. No trouble is too trivial, no burden too great, to be shared with her. Individual problems and schedules are quietly smoothed out by a conference with this smiling, charming widely-traveled friend on the faculty. Associate Professor of Biblical Literature, and for- mer Dean of Women, Dr. Dexter has been granted a sabbatical leave for spring semester of 1946-1947, and is continuing her graduate study at McCormick Theological Seminary. We loolg forward with great pleasure to the days when she will again be with us on our campus, lgnowing that we can always loolg to her for help and guidance. The council is composed of officers elected directly by the student body, two representatives from each class, and one representative from every active organization on the campus. This group meets every Wednesday in the club room at the library, and acts as a medium between the students and the faculty. The Student Council plans the social activities of the campus as well as taking an active part in regulating the hours, dormitory rules, and conduct of students. Fred Dahl heads the council, Russell Shafer is Vice Presi- dent, and Patricia WickliH is the Secretary-Treasurer. Dean Gates is the faculty advisor. Sfucfenll Ehmkan squaaiaiian D Woodricli, R. Renshaw, M. Ringold, H. Campbell, E.. Harada, E. Green, B. Burns, Bell, B. Shumaker, K. Green, H. Anderson One of the most outstanding groups on the campus is the Student Christian Associa- tion. Membership in S. C. A. is open to any student of Parsons College. The main purpose of the organization is to provide a means for expression of Christian ideals, to promote good fellowship, give experience in leadership, and to provide an opportunity for spiritual growth through new experiences in worship. S. C. A. started its activities early in the season by meeting trains and buses at the beginning of the fall semester in order to acquaint new students with the college and town. Other activities it promoted were the opening mixer party, Big and Little Sister Tea, a Hallowe'en Party, several chapel and vesper programs, Religious Emphasis Week, and the W. S. S. F. Drive. Under the sponsorship of S. C. A. deputation teams composed of students conducted worship services at small ohurches in this and neighboring counties. Regular meetings were held every second and fourth Tuesday nights in Ballard Lounge. Probably the most outstanding contribution of the S. C. A. to student life is the student center, The Hut, which is operated by the S. C. A. in co-operation with the college. OFFICERS Co-Presidents ..,... ...,......,.....,.... The Port was published weekly, and the staff learned the true meaning of the word deadline as they struggled to get their articles in on time. Al Bruce as Make-up Editor, plans the paper with the aid of Dick Van Zante. The Staff has for its workroom, the back room in Ewing Hall. The reporters meet there to discuss their stories or potential leads and to get advice or help from the editorial board. The Portfolio has a wide circulation. It goes to surrounding schools and college and to alumni and friends all over the country. Jniamaiianal Ralayana Glad Rowell Hoff: Prof. Sudermann, advisorg Robert Carson, president: Jay Horning l. Wischmeier Nlerryman One of the most worthwhile and interesting organizations on the Parsons Campus is the newly-formed Economics Club. Organized in the middle of March with much enthusiasm shown by members, this group, under the leadership of President Ebert Wischmeier, occupies a prominent position in Campus life and stimulates thought and action on current economic problems. Outstanding business leaders are engaged as speakers to bring to the Club the value of their experience in everyday business and economic problems. It is the hope of Mr. Tom Shearer, acting President of the College and Director of the Small Business Bureau of Parsons College, that definite conclusions on these problems may be reached after intelligent discussion of them. The Club is a social, as well as educational, organization, and sponsors dances and parties for students and faculty of the College. Membership is open to all students interested in Economics. The Faculty sponsor is Mr. lVlartin Zober, head of the Economics Departmentg officers for I947 are as follows: President .,.,....,. ..... E bert Wischmeier Vice President ..... ........... This work is entirely voluntary on the part of the students, since no college credit is given for partici- pation in the choir. The choir has added much to many of the chapel and vesper services during the year. At Christmas time, a complete concert of carols and Christmas anthem was given. The most outstanding event of the year for the choir was the seven-day spring tour during the Easter vacation. The first concert of the tour was given in Center- ville on Saturday evening, March 29th, in the First Methodist Church. On Palm Sunday the choir sang oven Radio Station KSIB at Creston: later that afternoon at the Bedford Presbyterian Church, and that evening in the Villisca Presby- terian Church. They sang Monday morning at the Villisca High School and that evening at the Clarinda Presbytehrian Church, Tuesday morning at Clarinda High School, and that evening at the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. Wednesday the choir appeared live different timesg in the morning at the Glenwood High School and Sidney High School, a half-hour broadcast over Radio Station KFNF in Shenandoah at two o'clock, and at the Shenandoah High School immediately following, and Wednesday evening in the Shenandoah Pres- byterian Church. Thursday afternoon they sang at the Corning High School and at the Corning Federated Church in the evening. Friday after- noon at Griswold the choir presented a community union Good Friday service in the high school audi- torium. The final concert of the tour was at the Atlantic Presbyterian Church Good Friday evening. Panama Galleqe Bam! Coach Wwe we me eww 4 Me www The I946 edition of the Wildcats under the direction of Tits Young started out the season very slowly and gained momentum as they rolled along. The season's -record of winning four and losing four is very good considering the first three contests were defeats. The Kelly Greens finished third in the Iowa Conference with a won four and lost two record. The losses were to Upper Iowa and Central who tied for first. Paul Selz is assistant coach of the Wildcat squad. As a cli- max to the season three Wildcats griclders landed on the first all conference team. They were Floyd Lundquist at tackle, Bob Berg at guard, and Bill Shumaker at halfback. fqddidlanl' eaacfr. 569 All Ganfmence 7ecam paadond placed. 74466 BERG Guard Bob Berg, freshman guard from Lockridge. Bob who never played football before coming to Parsons developed into a rough, tough guard be- fore the season was over. He was a good steady player who could be counted on to get his share of the tackles. Berg stands 5 feet I0 inches and weighs l90 lbs. LUNDQUIST Tackle Floyd Lunclquist, better known as l..unk, was con- sidered by many as the out- standing tackle in the confer- ence. The Fairfield sopho- more was the mainstay in the Wildcat line rarely missing a tackle. l..unk who acted as game captain most of the time stands 5 feet Il inches and weighs 195 lbs. SHUMAKER H alfback Bill Shumaker, freshman halfback from Ottumwa. Shu led the conference in scoring, crossing the double stripe nine times during the season for a total of 54 points. Two of his score were from 85 yards out which shows his speed and tricky open held running. Moss, Sapp, Coach Young Baseball made its biggest debut at Parsons since the pre-war days when about 50 candidates answered Coach Tib Young's call to the dia- mond for the I947 season. Included in the group were I I previous letter winners, the largest amount of experience available since before the war. Synonomous with the large supply of players at hand was the lengthy twelve game schedule that faced the Kelly Greens between April I I and May 26. This full schedule meant at least 2 games a week for the club and contained 8 Iowa Conference games. Coach Young's biggest obstacle in building a winning ball club was, as can be expected, nnding an adequate pitching staff. Eight such mounds- men did appear on the scene by the opening of the season and it was hoped that the season would be one of great satisfaction. 7aacA Competetive track and field events made their first appearance at Parsons since before the war. With Coach Howard lVlcIlrath at the helm, the 40 man squad whipped themselves into condition for six impor- tant meets. The hrst two affairs were dual-meets with Penn and Iowa Wesleyan. On April 25-26 the Wildcats represented themselves in the Drake Relays by sending men to compete in the following events: 2- mile relay: I-mile relayg one-half mile relayg and the open 2-mile run. The most important event of the season was the meet held at Simpson on lV1ay l6-l 7, when thirteen conference teams were scheduled to compete for the Iowa Conference championship.
