Top Rowe-Harold Gilbert, John Parsons, Clarence Peters Lower Row -Keith Gcltry, Alfred Petersen. Charles Bookin The men's debate squad, under the direction of Robert L. Bartlett, as coach, closed a successful season of scheduled debates with tive wins and two losses. Six of the seven debates were on the question, Resolved, that Congress should enact legislation embodying the essential principles of the McNary-Haugen Farm Relief bills. The affirmative team, made up of Harold Gilbert, a Freshman: John Par-- sons, a Sophomoreg and Clarence Peters, a Junior, won a debate with Des Moines University on the home floor, and one with Central College on the Central Hoor. In both cases the decision was given by an expert judge. This team also won a 2 to 1 vote in a three-judge decision with John Fletcher College on the latter's floor, but lost to Penn in an audience decision given by a Wesleyan audience. Parsons and Peters were both members of last year's debating squad, and Gilbert is one of the famous Fairfield High School debaters. The negative team had two debates on the Farm Relief question-one with Central on the Parsons floor, in which it won the single expert judge's decision, and one with Iowa Wesleyan on the Penn floor, in which it won the decision of the Penn audience. The third debate was an extemporaneous debate with Penn, given before the students of the Albia High School. Deciding by lot a question and a side, the teams took six hours for preparation. The audience decision was rendered in favor of the Penn debaters, who upheld the affirmative of the question of a Department of Education in the President's Cabinet. Of the members of this team, only Alfred Petersen had had previous college experience. Keith Goltry made his first attempt as a Senior, and Charles Bookin, a Freshman, had worked on the Ottumwa squad in his high school days. All the members of the men's squad represented Parsons in the debate tournament at the provincial Pi Kappa Delta convention. ,. Sixty stvtn

Neely as coach. The question was, Resolved, that Congress should enact legislation embodyimz the essential principles of the McNa.ry-Haugen Farm Relief bills. The aifirmative team lost its first debate, with Penn, on the home floor. It was an expert judge decision. Two days later, however, this team took an expert judxze's decision from Des Moines University on the Des Moines floor. and later won a 2 to 1 vote of three judges in a. debate with John Fletcher College on the home flour. Marie Post, in opening the debate for this team, vividly presented the need for farm relief. Frieda Krause followed with a clear analysis and explanation of the essential principles of the bills, and Rena Kyle closed the case by presenting' the soundness and practicability of the proposed measure. Miss Kyle's work was especially effective in both contruction and rebuttal speeches. The women's nexzative team had but two debates. It opened the season for Parsons by a win over State Teachers Collexze- a 2 to 1 vote of three judges-on the home floor. The next week it met Penn on the latter's lloor. Though the expert judge felt compelled to give his decision to the Penn team, he was lavish in his praise of the ability and appearance of the Parsons gzirls as women delmters. With her pleasing personality, Mildred Wiley won her listener's attention as soon as she took the flo r, and held it while she laid the foundation of the case. Dorothy Montgomery's work was characterized llmy n profound knowledge of her subject, and Edith Atchison closed the case and handled the last rebuttal most forcefully. The work of the entire team was characterized by brilliant thought work and effective mation under Fire.
