' 'P' ,.z....z State Gluntcztaniz GILBERT THORNTON KYLE PEARCE HAROLD GILBERT represented Parsons in the men's state extemporaneous contest at Mt. Pleasant. Though he failed to place this year, he is only a Freshman and should have some good years of work in the future. The general subject was, Military Training in Schools and Colleges, and the sub-topic that Gilbert drew was, Should Military Training in Schools and Colleges be Compulsory. MILDRED THORNTON turned her attention from debate, in which she repre- sented Parsons last year, and entered the women's state extemporaneous contest at Storm Lake. Miss Thornton drew, The Negro Up-to-Date. She failed to place. RENA KYLE-Though this was her first year at Parsons, she brought the college its best honors of the year in oratory. At the women's state oratorical contest at Storm Lake on February 24 and 25, she placed third, and at the provincial Pi Kappa Delta contest she placed second in competition with Iowa, Illinois and Missouri schools. In both contests she used her oration, What Doth It Proiit? a plea for respect for law. It was splendidly written, and convincingly delivered from the platform. MELVIN PEARCE was a man of high school speaking experience, who made his first intercollegiate appearance this year. He represented Parsons in the Iowa State Oratorical Contest at Mt. Pleasant on March 4, but failed to place. The sub- ject of his oration was, The Constitution. gl rnuinrial t -Mappa -I vita Speakers I VIRGIL CAUGHELL had quite a high school reputation as an orator, and made his first attempt in college circles at the provincial Pi Kappa Delta convention at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, on March 24-26. There he competed with orators from 'Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri schools. In his section of the preliminaries, he placed second out of six, but failed to place in the final contest. His oration, Gold vs. Ideals,' was well written for oratorical effect, and Caughell reached its heights admirably.
