nile AMON ne G yf Today is June 2, 1975. As I sit here in this - the new Parry McCluer High School, Iam watching my seventeen year old son graduate, The new high school is one of the largest inthe United States: it coverstwentycity blocks. The newhigh schoolis located just south of Enderly Heights, where the old Mountain View Drive-In used to be. Buena Vista has grown into a thriving city with a popu- lation of 51,000, and is one of the world's leading manu- facturing centers. As I sit here in this huge auditorium my mind wanders back to the year 1957, when I graduated. Our class consisted of only four members, one of the smallest that Parry McCluer has ever «snown. There was Mac Felts - Mac was always talking of foot - ball, even in government class. When Miss Glass asked him how many Senators there were in the Senate, he said ''50 yards,' ' Well, Mac went to a small college in Virginia, and now is head football coach at Southern Seminary right here in Buena Vista, Then there was Ronald Shrader - he was always passing out chewing gum inclass so you could get 6 demerits. When finally you would get your mind on the books, someone would punch youin the back. Then you would know Ronnie was handing you a piece of gum. Maybe that was what gave Ronnie his start, for now he owns the largest chewing gum factory inthe world, And there was James Bono - James was forever doing something in the chemistry labo- ratory. Oneday there was an explosion in the lab. After the smoke cleared away there lay James onthe floor witha bottle of Sulfur in his hand. Now he is one of the leading scientists of the earth, not to mention the other planets. Just a few weeks ago in one of the leading newspapers I read that Dr. James Bono had discovered a new vitamin pill for in-grown toe-nails, As for me, I remember cutting up frogs in the Biology lab. That was when I decided I wanted tobe a surgical nurse. I am now working at the largest hospital and nursing school in Virginia, the Buena Vista Hospital, along with taking care of my family. Suddenly my husband gave me a nudge, andI came b ack from my thoughts and dreams of my high school days. Look- ing up at my son, I wondered if he had had as good a time in high school as Ihad. Of course he rides to school in a 1975 Space Cadet car, while we just had a measley old 1937 hot rod.
