He was also Christmas attendent escort in the Christmas Parade in 1956. Ronald isavery likeable guy, and is always willing to help you. Both students and teachers alike are fond of him. He is better known around Parry McCluer as ''Red' . ¥ NOW AND JAMES BONO ' Now and Then MAC FELTS Now and Then RONALD SHRADER Now and Then JO ANN PAYNE Now and Then nile AMON ne G yf Today is June 2, 1975. As I sit here in this - the new Parry McCluer High School, Iam watching my seventeen year old son graduate, The new high school is one of the largest inthe United States: it coverstwentycity blocks. The newhigh schoolis located just south of Enderly Heights, where the old Mountain View Drive-In used to be. Buena Vista has grown into a thriving city with a popu- lation of 51,000, and is one of the world's leading manu- facturing centers. As I sit here in this huge auditorium my mind wanders back to the year 1957, when I graduated. Our class consisted of only four members, one of the smallest that Parry McCluer has ever «snown. There was Mac Felts - Mac was always talking of foot - ball, even in government class. When Miss Glass asked him how many Senators there were in the Senate, he said ''50 yards,' ' Well, Mac went to a small college in Virginia, and now is head football coach at Southern Seminary right here in Buena Vista, Then there was Ronald Shrader - he was always passing out chewing gum inclass so you could get 6 demerits. When finally you would get your mind on the books, someone would punch youin the back. Then you would know Ronnie was handing you a piece of gum. Maybe that was what gave Ronnie his start, for now he owns the largest chewing gum factory inthe world, And there was James Bono - James was forever doing something in the chemistry labo- ratory. Oneday there was an explosion in the lab. After the smoke cleared away there lay James onthe floor witha bottle of Sulfur in his hand. Now he is one of the leading scientists of the earth, not to mention the other planets. Just a few weeks ago in one of the leading newspapers I read that Dr. James Bono had discovered a new vitamin pill for in-grown toe-nails, As for me, I remember cutting up frogs in the Biology lab. That was when I decided I wanted tobe a surgical nurse. I am now working at the largest hospital and nursing school in Virginia, the Buena Vista Hospital, along with taking care of my family. Suddenly my husband gave me a nudge, andI came b ack from my thoughts and dreams of my high school days. Look- ing up at my son, I wondered if he had had as good a time in high school as Ihad. Of course he rides to school in a 1975 Space Cadet car, while we just had a measley old 1937 hot rod. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, James Bono, Jo Ann Payne, Mac Felts, and Ronald Shrader, class of June 1957, being of sound mind and good health declare in writing its last Will and Testament. To future students, our names elegantly carved on the desks. Tothe FRESHMAN, four whole years to go. To the SOPHOMORES, the scotch tape that held our books together. To the JUNIORS, the wonderful thought of being Seniors. To the CHEERLEADERS, more powerful lungs. To the BAND, new music. To the SENIORS, Finals with questions and answers. To the CAFETERIA, foot-long hot dogs. To the SENIOR TREASURY, our emptied pockets. STILL OF SOUND MIND, WE LEAVE: To the ENGLISH DEPARTMENT, all our worn-out run-on sentences, To the ART DEPARTMENT, modern interpretations. To the TYPING AND MATH DEPARTMENTS lots and lots of erasers, And to the PARRIMAC, good pictures every time. But most of all to Parry McCluer High School all our dreams and the memories of happy and education-filled days within its walls. The Blues behind the fine leadership of Co- Captains Bobby Williams and Ronnie Wheeler played brilliant ball to be as young and inex- perienced as the club was, The squad opened with a seven-seventie with Staunton. From there the Blues coasted to wins over Wilson Memorial, V.S.D., Buchanan, and Central. In the V. S, D. game fullback Vernon Staton scored four touchdowns and an extra point for his high game total of the year. In the Buchanan game Senior quarterback Mac Felts threw three touch- Coach and Co-Captains down passes. He had 11 for the year. Bobby Williams, Mr. Kurtz, Ronnie Wheeler The Blues surprised everyone by tying Waynesboro 6-6, then gaining an easy victory over Clifton Forge. The Blues bowed before the power - ful Rockets of Natural Bridge and Lexington's Scarlet Hurricanes, The season was still a big success and the Blues should be even better as they lose only one member from the past year's squad, Get out and back your team because it has the makings of District 5 Champions. Most Valuable Player - Vernon Staton - Team's leading scorer with (86) points. Best Sportsmanship Bobby Williams Football Squad on their trip to Washington, Only Senior - Mac Felts - Lead- ing Passer in District with 11 touchdown passes for the year. They participate in the District festival and all-state band, A fine showing is always made by the 'biggest little band' in Virginia. In the fall they went to Charlottesville to participate in the U. Va's first ''Band Day. Bands from over the state were invited to play at the game which saw U, Va. play V. M. 1. in football. Possibly the greatest thrill wasa three day adventure to Bristol, Virginia - Tennessee to participate in the Southwest Bank Festival. The band was housed in private homes and enjoyed the comforts of home. They had the priviledge of seeing some of the finest marching bands in the United States, Some forty thousand people saw the 'big little' band from Buena Vista During the two hour parade which preceded the field shows. Ihave never seen so many of the gang here at one time, It looks like every one wants to help, but there isn't enough work to go around, Ha! Poor Miss Shaner is just about to go crazy. Every one is going around like a chicken with their head cut off. Pete and Bobby look so industrious, but I think they are just playing the role. Ronald is now going around taking orders for drinks, such as: cokes and pepsi's. Wayne is going from person toperson trying to find something to do, and Jean and Irene are trying to type a little bit. Well, Florence just came and parked herself down beside Carolyn and I. Nancy, Betty Jo, and Martha : Ann, and Marilyn are over at the next table just having a fit over Miss Shaner, Sponsor something, don't tell anyone, but I think it is over a page in the yearbook, Isn't that funny ? Mac and Miss Shaner are up at the desk doing the dummy. . . 2 «...inother words the book, Wayne Garrett and Billy are budding artists at work doing the art for the book, Ruth, Clyde, Maxine, and Sandra are having a fit cutting up snapshots over there. JoAnn and James are just refereeing! Pat, Mary Ann and Barbara are having a fine time playing records. Will we ever get the book together ? Well, I guess it is time to sign off now, so here I go. Susan Loughhead P.S. We allappreciate the work Mr. Turner did on the photographs for us.
