Business Manager Too young to realize that we're old . enough to know better | BR SRF hh hh, Seniors at last! And soon we shall be independent men and women. - As our minds wander over our school days, we realize that the teachers have seldom appreciated our efforts to grasp the knowledge that the Board of Education intended should be ours. With the exception of Hughie Hollar who was not fortu- nate enough to be with this dignified class in the seventh grade, we have had a hard time living down the reputation that the teachers built up for us then. Now that we have come up in the world, even to the front door of our school, the teachers no longer look at us as if that loathsome name, rats , really fitted; but they gaze upon our sober and intelligent faces and sigh as if to say, It grieves me to think that next year we shall not have the pleasure of teaching this fine group of men and women, who have really been @ credit to the school, I know they cannot be surpassed by any incoming class, ; As we go forth into the world of this Atomic Age, equipped with the knowledge that has been drilled and pounded into our heads, we wonder how the world is going to use so many Einsteins at one time. May we turn our minds to the serious purpose of building a better world. es eee yee Digee noe oh Pace tea vi of cea we tg ie pho pwr ote ef OE wie wbey Pas i ar ie Ant 5 Y 3 sine ov wee pina oh A. 2 We : pas TRene Meee i. Soon I begin to see figures moving to- wards me - and strange to relate, I see to be able to read their thoughts and, in a flash, to understand all that has happened to them during the fifteen years following their graduation from Parry MeCluer High School in 1947, ‘ 1h “Th Nh ry My “Th “Uh First, I see Jimmy Page, who enjoyed so much being judge at the trial of Curtis Floyd at graduation, that he decided to study law and make a career of it. He is now a distin- guished judge of the local Federal Distriet Court. We little thought when Bobby Riegert was president of the Senior Class that he someday would be the Junior Senator from Virginia. Of ‘course, the Parry MeCluer alumni voted for him as they did in high school. Marion Seay is now a well-known singer of the Metropolie tan Opera company in New York, She still enjoys singing for us over the radio some popular songs we all used to leve in high school days. Lewis Wagner became so interested in electricity while Studying Physies in high school that he is now chief elece trocutioner at the Federal Penitentiary at Atlanta, Georgia. On the artistic side, he is known all over the country for his much loved comic strip, Bringing up Great Grampap. He has just been made manager of Graybill’s new department store, Grades in Geometry at the Southern Seminary have surely been improving lately. Wonder if Sam Burks’ being the new geometry instructor could be having anything to do with this? Lucille Wheeler has, at last, married an old rich man, She has just donated $50,000 to the new school building. Sheldon Davidson is now a building contractor. He has just finished the second new addition to the Parry MeCluer School Py Marion Coleman is married to a Frenchman and is living in Paris. Her French has certainly served her to good advane tage. Mary Ann Eggleston, who for a good many years has been head nurse in the hospital located on Mapp’s Hill, will soon be the new Welfare Director of Buena Vista. Most of us had rather appear foolish than wise, or that seems to be how we impress others. We have our serious moments, but we don't like to be seen in one of these. When we were freshmen the upper-elassmen ealled us rats , How we longed to return the compliment . We now thoroughly enjoy calling the present freshmen rats . One of our most annoying habits - that is to grownups - is that of giggling. We giggle at almost anything, for no matter what people say we can make a joke of it. (And do we have fun!) Chewing gum is another habit we have. (And blessed are those who can get bubble gum.) Mr. Kling gave us a talk on this in assembly. He showed us just how we looked while chewing. At the time at least half of us had gum, and we were just chewing away? I'll assure you that this was one time when we felt embarrassed. We study sometimes, believe it or not, though we don't like to be caught at it. And we are proud to have a few from our class in the Beta Club. This is one goal a lot more of us hope to reaeh later on in high schoole Most of us sophomores have no regular jobs, so we can loaf while we watch the upper-classmen slaving over soda fountains and counters. How we love to make them wait on us. We have our favorite places to go, and we usually end up in Shirey and Brown. There we sit and talk over a Pepsi for some time, and the grim looks on the faces of the clerks would kill anybody but us. (We just ignore them.) At the beginning of schaol we had lots of fun at the pep meetings. For once we didn't make as much noise as we were supposed to. (Well, anything to find fault.) We have also enjoyed the school dances this year, We now think we really know how to dance, whether anycre agrees with us or not. It is a great life - this being a sophomore, end I sSup-- pose this year will linger in our memories as one ¢f ths best years of our lives. I'm sure we'll never forget the wonderful times we've had as silly sophomores”. thy, “Why “Uh, “Ws “ns a UU, Uh i RTT RAR TR | ih. “Mh oe UG Uh i Me Ws Ws Ya ss Wn Min Uh Wh Uh, Uh rete, Ss . tas ried ober pare We: CR ee inte oe ese aieeis are 4 eh eet Passe $F tee acts 2% 8 Oe eh a eee oe bs bs be poet custo Spee ie eet) pS és a ae Te Cees oe Re Syd Be 2 3 3 ; ; aoe rages ; a Soap ee LO LOE . hte lig c ee se Oy 8 TD tare te Soe Pe OY riven ee a6 °z 7 3 = ey ea ame fe pe y ¥ : Sat fader Fe Ae ee RESO oy Hare gia at ne Pintkes tahescts ‘ Sap he Qi oh pe : witore ; “ oj oh HL eS Fo a Rea pee eae tac ; dem a re : ; eB ewEST A, 4 , e aAR SS hoo henge ier . ‘ 3 gk 22 z hein 4 Eater bie anes Oy SKE SS bee Sol : : ; Died ge er 5 ee ; rat btcaiet ae Sanh De = ; Mepis ? . “gh 3 e Lene at Y: SHS Ee 3 ; rae Ys By tede as Nae Fe ; ancl mean ghet es orsnwemeeen tts Se loo ast: 54: : beara sree d 7 Z vee F r ae ioohb sion) weer Se =ee : tT f aad Ag hs . c : set Lee 5 c+ Renee ee Qa yy Pins tO A Ae heya te tet se on 44 ‘ be Sager dqn h OFG : OOo Dade aero | ® £ 2 tar 4 a ei : : ; : : . es Fetes . 3 4 : abs ¢ : Fee ext ahh siya? When that day arrived, hot and typical of September, I was stopped by the head of the household to take off a first lay- er of the new Forever Amber lipstick and change the red bobby socks to white and the green frilled taffeta skirt to a summer print. Feeling my importance, I went to the front door. There I did not find the expected sign with Welcome to '46 Freshmen , but I did find closed doors, so I had to go to the back. Upon reaching my homeroom, I faced a cool, matter-of-fact teacher, who, I am sure, could not tell whether I was cross- eyed or the blue-eyed freshman siren I had dreamed about be- ing. To add to my deep disappointment, the blond idol of all freshman girls in his plaid shirt did not seek me out the first week and demand my attendance at all high school dances. (I guess nature never intended my size 9 loafers for a dance floor, When I visualize myself jitterbugging with my idol, I see instead a sort of plaideskirted octopus with extra- long legs dangling.) “ My pre-freshman ideas of a wonderful high school career were further dented the first few months when we discovered that part of our initiation would be singing. TI gue? ona pair of artificial eyelashes and practiced a Jove song for days. A poor freshman's hopes were crushed when not 4 sin- gle upper classman swooned. I also sutfered Crops in ny eyes every hour to stop the batting I had hoped would capture a few dozen hearts. My first serious impressions (after my romantic ideas were dimmed) concerned the needs of our school, We need a gymna--. sium, a modern Home Ec. Department, (I still have a few more romantic dreams) and better equipment for sports for all grades. I especially want a gymnasium, for ten dollars looks like a thousand dollars to a freshman to pay for one night's dancing, especially if that freshman isn't a female Astaire , We also need a larger library with more books, which will be available to us at all times. Despite the disadvantages our school has, we have many ad-= vantages, and I am convinced that we freshmen aren't making the most of the opportunities our school is offering us. 4 Ue a Ua, Wo, Ys hs — A Deflated Freshman.
