F 1 Princzpalas Message May the memories that you recall as you read these pages in the years ahead be pleasant ones. I congratulate the staff and sponsor of the Tornado for publishing another fine yearbook. I encourage you to look above and beyond present-day problems and have faith in the future. Each generation accomplishes more than the preceding generation, else there would be no progress. Opportunities for service are greater than ever before. Use these opportunities and your talents to advance yourselves and our civilization, remem- bering that no man lives alone. We need one another not only to live, but to help live. My personal memories of our first year together will always be among my fond- est. Your attitude and conduct have been of the highest, and your friendship will always be a prized possession. Out of the mist I can see faint forms approaching. Well, if it isn't C. W. Waid and Hawk Thompson driving down Michigan Boulevard in their Coupe De Ville and looking as if they are trying to turn Chicago back to the days of Al Capone. There is Gene Simpson, Birmingham's biggest banker, and two of his largest depositors, Gene Harbin and Milton Thompson, who are playing ball with the Globe Trotters. The scene now changes to Hollywood and I see Marian Dunn, who is starring in Director Ronald Moore 's latest production. Berta Ruth Waid is now a literary critic for the NEW YORK TIMES. Virginia Murphree Sides is now operating a kindergarten at Pleasantfield. Judy Cannon and Frances Minor are the operators of a dancing school in Oakman. Kenneth Jinright is now president ofJinright's Auto Parts, Inc. Two of his ten sec- retaries are Linda Turner and Doris Freeman. Gail Naramore and Marie Caldwell have gone to Alaska to look over the eligible Alaskan men. f Pat Sanford is married to the Chief of Police at Brookside. Anne Lois Glaze is stewardess of Pilot Paul Kitchens' space ship. Linda Shaw and Norma Robbins are teaching school in Japan. The right men have not come along for Mary Dean Jones and Anne Stone, so they are still searching. Roger Stone is now playing professional football with the Baltimore Colts, the team Garland Thompson is coaching. 1 Anne Parker Minor, with the help of her six little Minors, is now operating a bowl- ing alley in Oakman. Jeanne Gill and Carolyn Sides, poor girls, have never made it out of Pleasantfield. Roy Hice and Glenn Wade stayed in Parrish with Anne and Stella. Roy now owns the golf course and Glenn owns Studdard Brothers. Mary Sue Odom and Gladys Ruth Bevill left two years ago on a six weeks tour of Europe, but have never returned. Today, Charlie and Simmes applied for passports to go to Europe to see whether anything has happened to their wives. Histor The six years that seemed to be an eternity have passed, and as we look back upon our high school ca- reers, we realize that the time passed too quickly for the full realization of many of our dreams. Only a short time ago, we were the shy, fright- ened Junior I's. At that time the coveted honor of becoming Seniors seemed far in the future, but we were willing to forge ahead under the guidance of Mrs. Edith Deason and Miss Ruth Richards. With their help we soon became adjusted to high school life. For J y ig f Kr -r A the Homecoming parade, we elected Gladys Brasfield .G . 22. as aff and Glenn Wade maid and escort, and we made a Safety float. In our second year of high school, we were under the direction of Miss Pearl Key and Mrs. Leon Short. Doris Dunn and Garland Thompson were our maid and escort. In the Sweetheart contest, Gladys Brasfield, Sandra Rowland, and Martha Allred were the runners-up. We became freshmen the next year under the leadership of Mrs. Jennie Nelson. Stella Studdard and Glenn Wade were maid and escort and our float won third place. Gladys Brasfield and Sandra Rowland were elected F. H. A. favorites. Our Sophomore year we were ably guided by Mrs. Willodean Baird. In that year Doris Dunn won third place in the Beauty Contest. Virginia Murphree and Ralph Buzbee were our maid and escort in the Homecoming parade, and our float won third place. Finally we were Juniors. Just one more year to go before becoming Seniors. During our Junior year, we gave the Junior-Senior Banquet, won second place with our float, Frances Minor and Larry Thompson were maid and escort. Sandra Rowland won second place in the Beauty Contest, Marian Dunn, third, Gladys Brasfield, fourth. Mrs. Willo- dean Baird was our sponsor. On August 29, 1960, we became SENIORS! l I We soon became aware of the fact that our Senior year was destined to become our busiest year in high school. There were numerous things to be done, and Mrs. Lafayette Michael, with infinite patience, guided us through our many activities. Our major project was the publication of the annual. lt took many hours of work to raise enough money for the yearbook. The whole class was on the annual staff and everybody sold magazines, candy, cards, and Goodaire to raise the cash. We also sponsored the annual Beauty Contest. Many honors were won by members of the class. Marian Dunn was chosen Good Citi- zenship Girl, Gladys Brasfield won second place in the Beauty Contest. Kenneth Jinright was chosen Mr. Parrish Hi. Roy Hice, Milton Thompson, Glenn Wade, and Garland Thompson were runners-up. Glenn Wade and Roger Stone were chosen for the All Con- ference team and the All County team. Glenn also received honorable mention for All State. Garland Thompson received honorable mention for All County. Five Senior Girls were elected cheerleaders. They were Anne Graham, Marian Dunn, Gladys Brasfield, Mary Sue Brown, and Berta Ruth Waid. In the Homecoming parade, Martha Allred was Miss Homecoming and Paul Kitchens was her escort. Our float, Addison's Swan Song, was a prize winner. In addition to the many activities mentioned, we studied some. We had to in order to pass the many tests the teachers hurled at us. lt has been a wonderful year and we shall treasure many memories of our good times together. Why, Roger Stone, Anne Stone, or Norman Waid could win over me any day, but since I was chosen I would like to make a few complaints. Mary Sue, I will be glad when you get Charlie. l'm tired of hearing you talk about him. Gladys, I wish you would make up your mind whether it is C. W. or Simmes. Anne Graham, what is the matter? You're pretty good at getting boyfriends, but you can't seem to keep them. Marian, you don't have to wear something new every day just because you were elected best dressed girl. Linda Shaw, there are never enough copies of TORNADO TALK to go around. Can't you count? Roy, if laziness admits one to heaven, you are well on your way up there. Mary Dean, when you leave, will you please take your loud mouth with you? Marie, the election is over and you were elected prettiest girl. You can stop primping now. Virginia, can't you keep your mind off Brack long enough to pay attention in class? Kenneth, you are always talking about people that are short, but, if you don't know it, you're not exactly a giant yourself. Carolyn, who is your Romeo? Bring him out in public and let us see him. Judy, I surely wish Bill would come home, then maybe I woul'dn't have to wear ear plugs. Stella and Glenn, I know the Bug has bitten you but that is no reason to cut yourself off from the world. Hugh L., you are always talking, but do you know what you are talking about? Paul, since you are our star salesman, why don't you try your sales ability on some girl? Linda Turner, you don't have to study all the time to prove that you are the most studious Gene Simpson, if you don't get busy you are going to be here again next year. Patricia, now that you're going steady maybe you will be quiet for a while. Ronald, you are always late for school. ls it because you are so slow? Gail, never let it be said that your home and school duties interfere with your romantic life. Jeanne, why are you always blushing? Haven't you grown up yet? Milton, you were elected musician, but I've not heard you play a note. Doris, 'tis a cruel world you are going into. You had better learn to speak for your rights. Gene Harbin, why are you so quiet in class? Are you that quiet around your girlfriend? Annie Lois, you are always reading, but does it help you any? Garland, you seem to like the Martin High girls. What's wrong with Parrish girls? Frances, I have heard that the quietest are the meanest. Now I know it. Norma, if we have any money left in the treasury, I want us to buy you a comb and a mirror since you have worn out the ones you have. See, I haven't grumbled a bit. I have just expressed my opinion. -Qfiadivfazxafaaialc When we were just tiny tots, We started with a little plot. To finish high school was the plang Then to help the world expand. Twelve long years we have worked, And never our duties shirked. At last we have reached our goalg Now we feel brave and bold. And render to the world our dueg A greater story of progress tellg So to Parrish High we bid farewell. W , Ss? if Q. ,R Football Review The 1960 Tornado team was led by Captain Roger Stone and Co-Captains Garland Thompson and Glenn Wade. The fine coaching job was done by Coach Leon Short and Coach Wallace Hallmark. September 10: Parrish Tornadoes opened a successful season by surprising the Cordova Blue Devils with a '7-6 Victory. Early in the first period a Cordova back raced 65 yards for paydirt. The underrated Tornadoes fought back in the second quarter with quarterback Glenn Wade sneaking over from the one yard line. Halfback Garland Thompson made the game-winning point with only seconds remaining in the half. The second half was a see-saw defensive battle with the line led by Roy Hice and Roger Stone. This was the first vic- tory over Cordova in 13 years. September 19: Curry defeated Parrish 19-7. fWe're still trying to forget that onely September 24: Parrish came back strong for their second win of the season by defeating Meek 25-0. The first score was made by scatback Glenn Robertson. Glenn Wade, James Wade, and end Roy Hice completed the scoring. The entire line was outstanding led by Donald Moore and DeWayne Uptain. September 30: Parrish, led by fine line play and the brilliant running of half- back Garland Thompson, captured their third win of the season by defeating Lynn 26-20. October 7: Parrish journeyed to Gorgas to play the Warriors of Martin. The game was a hard fought defensive game with many sparkling plays and ex- citing moments. The game ended as it began, in a 0-O tie. October 14: The Tornadoes next went to Oakman to help the Wildcats cele- brate their Homecoming. There were some very GRAVE moments with Parrish halfback Garland Thompson again showing brilliant running in scoring three touchdowns. Wade added the extra points. The line was led by Roger Stone and Roger Kilpatrick. Score: Parrish 20, Oakman 19. October 20: Parrish suffered their second loss of the season at the hands of the Dora Bulldogs, 25-0. October 281 Parrish journeyed next to Akron for a 31-6 victory. Junior half- back Glenn Robertson scored one touchdown and Seniors Garland Thompson and Glenn Wade added two each. The extra point was added by Roger Stone. Eugene Lawes led the line and made many sparkling plays. November 4: Palmetto was the scene of Parrish's sixth victory, with fullback Earnest Ivey and quarterback Glenn Wade scoring the points. Donald Moore, Roger Kilpatrick, and Milton Thompson led the line with many great plays. November ll: Addison handed Parrish her third defeat of the season with a 13-'7 victory. The game ended with Parrish on the one foot line. Thus, a successful 6-3-1 season was completed. HMLJJZ-ww Wqwlawv GLADYS BRASFIELD MARY SUE BROWN .Ji W '- A 4' V, Q fd ff ' uri .
