Along with the Student Council we constructed a marker in front of the school. Besides this, we also gave out ribbons to honor roll students, carried out a very success- ful book sale, had college students talk to the English classes, and hung posters to en- courage honesty. Officers for the 1960 National Honor Society were as follows: President, Royce Rosen- bergg Vice-President, jimmy Bedgoodg Secretary, Mary Kay Lamarg Treasurer, Florence Ehlertg Chaplain, Sandra Fittsg Parliamentarian, Elnor Yeagerg and Reporterg jean Rainer. Uze Sel-,4!r1 my The Sel-Ala Staff has worked very hard to make the 1960 Sel-Ala the very best ever. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped us. Miss Martha Wilkinson and Miss Jerry Shreve served as our Sponsors this year and did an ex- cellent job, Also, we would like to thank Mr. Walker, the faculty, and you the students of Parrish High. Without your help we never could have done it. We hope that you enjoy looking at your Sel-Ala, and that it holds many good mem- ories lor you to look back on. iFATEDi Eneida Sanderson, Agnes Talbert, Janet Dickerson, Martha Porterfield, Sandra Fitts X . , I . Parrish High School is greatly indebted to the Student Council of 1960 for making this school year a one to remember for the many activities and accomplishments. The Student Council not only sponsors such service activities as used book sale, and Student Directory, but they also sponsored such social activities as Home coming Week and Dance. TWIRP Week and Dance, and BOP Week and Dance. The BOP Dance should especially be remembered for the fine music from the Monarchs from Nashville, Tennessee. The Student Council had many other projects but the two most important were to help the National Honor Society erect a marker in front of the school, and to secure a Foreign Exchange Student for next year at Parrish. They were successful in both projects. The school now has a beautiful marker near Broad Street for people to see and recognize our school. Next year, for the second time, we will have a foreign exchange student. This time the student will be a boy, Jorg Hanish, from Ger- many. The Student body greatly appreciates the services performed by this council. MT W-7-7 CLASS SONG WRITER: ROYCE ROSENBERG 511155 Song As we follow our stars through the years ahead And thumb through the pages of time, We'll recall with a smile All the years worthwhile That have made our lives rich and sublime. We'x'e walked through your halls, Learned to give, not to take, With dear friends and teachers nigh. You've given us of your beauty and truth, And we love you, Parrish High! We'll cherish Parrish High! Parrish High, you have taught: Keep your heads up high, And ne'er be afraid of the dark. Keep your knowledge and friends. Happiness never ends If the things I have taught you you mark. Thus come, classmates, pray To our Father above, Father, grant that we may be refulgent lights of goodness and truth For our high school and for Thee, For Parrish and for Theef' 1'- X 'Yu Z' CLASS HISTORIAN: lflorence Ehlert In September, 1957, we gallantly entered Parrish High, bringing many changes with us. We were the first class to bring the junior high along. Yes, as we had suspected the whole summer, our little brothers and sisters shared a little of our excitement, since the senior and junior divisions were combined. We like to think Mr. Walker had enjoyed us so much in junior high that he CLHHC, too. as the new senior high principal. Also, Mr. Pickard came to Selma to head our city school system. Something new showed up in sportsfuniforms of the new blue and white colors were used, and we fought each game with a Ram mascot. We all pouted, the way sophomores can. when we learned of the revised grading system. Instead of 91- 100 being an A, 95-100 was the standard, and 70, not 60, was the new passing mark. However, we were quick to realize that this upgrading gave us higher goals and a more realistic value to our grades. As juniors, we were the first to enjoy a foreign stu- dent at Parrish High. Ulla Bengtsson of Sweden came and spent a year studying at our school. Her trip laid the foundation for a permanent exchange student pro- gram in Selma. With money we earned from two successful barbe- Klass ffisivry cues, we gave the junior-Senior Prom. Our theme, Out Of This World, was effectively carried out by cover- ing the ceiling and walls of the gym in blue-starred paper and by decorating with satellites, rockets, space- men, and clouds. We were lucky juniors in that we were first to use the new gymnasium. The old gym was converted into part of the girls' physical education department, leaving the modern addition to the boys and Coach Speed. Time passed. We are seniors. Our class members are in charge of the Student Council, the Honor So- ciety, the Tatler, and the Sel-Ala. Some have excelled in athletics, some have led cheers, many others have brought honors to our science department, debate team. D.O. and D.E. clubs, Band and Glee Club. For years, different groups have considered erecting a name marker in front of Parrish. We are proud to be among those who made successful plans. Construction of the marker was completed May 26. Like every preceding class since 1936, we topped the highest magazine goal ever set. Our sales totaled 311,490 For all these and many other goals reached, honors won, and tasks done, we know we are indebted to a large group to whom we now express our sincere grati- tude. Our parents and school faculty have guided, guarded, and girded us through the years with their endless hours of planning and toiling. Their influence will remain with us. It seems strange to think of an event that happened in the first grade and say, Oh, that was twelve years ago. We have come a long way in those twelve years, but graduation is not astopping point, rather, a stepping stone. Soon we close a chapter of our lives and begin a new one. We look back on many happy years of growth and, with our trust in God, we look hopefully to the future.
