Scary. national honor ociel To be eligible for membership in the National Honor Society, a student must excel in scholarship, leadership, character, and service while at Por- rish High. Five percent ot each class are tapped in their Junior year and ten percent in their Senior year. This year the honor society, under the sponsorship ot Mrs. J. C Stocks, has carried out several service proie-cts, book sales, filled Christmas boxes, encouraged higher grades by pinning ribbons on students making lst and 2nd honor roll each six weeks, presented the most outstanding Sophomore trophy, gave assignments -to absentees, and acted as guides on Career Day. In the State Convention held at Mobile, Alabama, the honor society was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the State. The National Honor Society has made an excellent record tor our school this year. The Concert Band was by no means over-shadowed by the Marching Band how- ever. This year Parrish played hosts to the visiting bands ot the Sixth district Band Clinic held February 3rd and 4th. Then Parrish had the District Contest on March l7 where they received permission to enter the State Contest at the University of Alabama on April 7. The Concert Band also held two concerts on April 27th and May 26th, respectively, and played for numerous assemblies both at the High School and other schools. Some at these were. tilling well-fare food boxes for Christmas, making Christmas stockings, kit bags, and bridge score pads for the Veterans Hos- pital, making valentinef favors for the Selma hospitals, and collecting comic books and pocket books for the Craig Field Hospital. The Junior Red Cross had this year an enrollment of almost TOO per cent of our student body here at Parrish. No special recognition was given to the many students who contributed their time and talent to other activities. lt was with these students in mind that the present system was devised. Under this plan athletes still may earn a letter, however, in addition all other students making worthwhile contrif butions to the lite ot the school are eligible for a schcol letter. Any student is eligible tor a letter il he earns the required number ol points lOO in a single year, an accumulation ot l25 in two consecutive years, or l5O in three consecutive years. A student in order to receive points must have passed three academic subiects during the semester in which points were earned. In addition a vote is taken ot the laculty members to determine a person's citizen- ship. It the person's citizenship is considered lair or excellent he then receives a standard school letter with an emblem representing the activity in which earned. The letters are awarded in assembly at school at the end ot each semester, Then near the close ot the school year a banquet is given tor those having earned the school letter. Service stripes are added tor persons who earn a letter for a second or more time. ll you wish to obtain a new letter, the old one must be turned in. There are no regulations as to when a person may or may not wear the school letter.
