He has proved in the past four years to be a friend to each student in the Selma school system. The Senior Class of Parrish High feels very fortunate in having had Mr. Guilford as our principal for three years. We feel that he has added much to our years in high school that will go with us through all of our lives. Page I3 RICHARDSON BOSWORTH HILL MORRISON HATCH H. V ice President MARTHA BRICE .... . . .Secretary-Treasurer The year 1952 brought on outstanding crop of Seniors to Parrish High, about the most well rounded class these hallowed halls have seen in a long time. Besides exceling in football, baseball, basketball and track, our class was well represented in ath- letic events with cheerleaders, band members and maiorettes. Also, this year's T atler has been one of the best, having two printed issues instead of one. One of our members, Milam Turner, made us feel mighty proud when he went to the state Ameri- can Legion Oratorical Contest. The Class went over the top in magazine sales, showing the kind of spirit they have in each proiect they undertake. Truly this is a representative class of Albert G. Parrish High. The Letter Club is an organization which gives credit to those students who have been very active in extra curricula activities. Each participant in sports, Student Council, Sel-Ala, Glee Club, Dramatic Club and the like are given points according to the amount ot work invested in the activity. When a certain number of points are acquired, a Parrish High letter is awarded. This is a unique system enjoyed by Parrish High because in most schools only athletes are given letters. Smith, Cox, Woll, ond Weir were out- stonding in the Parrish forword, with Turner, Lewis, Boird, and Chester beoring the brunt of the running ottock. Page 89 SPIVEY, JOHN VVEIR, CLYDE POWELL, CHARLES GAME WRITE-UP PARRISH 0 DEMOPOLIS 39 The Parrish offensive completely collapsed as a fine coached Demopolis team completely out- played Parrish. Bo Spear, one of the fastest stopping backs in South Alabama, was the shining star of the game as he scored 4 T D's. PARRISH 0 ANNISTON 0 Coaches Hodges and Speed took the wraps off a sophomore back, Ben Crane, he scored on a 67 yard run late in the 4th quarter, but was called back. The entire Parrish team played outstanding ball as Captain Turner was the outstanding blocker on the field. PARRISH 25 VALLEY 14 The Fighting Tigers got back into the win column by defeating a strong Valley Hi team. Flat Smith and Eddie Wall were stalwarts in the Parrish line, as both opened gaping holes in the enemy forward wall. PARRISH 13 EUFAULA 26 Parrish went down to defeat before a great Eufaula team. Baird and Crane were the outstanding players for Parrish. PARRISH 13 TUSCALOOSA 12 Coaches Hodges and Speed went back to their old stomping grounds, as both were former Crim- son Tiders, and brought back a victory over the Black Bears. It was the first Selma victory over Tus- caloosa in 6 years. PARRISH 37 CLANTON 7 Coach Hodges' offensive minded Tigers completely demolished a valiant Clanton team. The Tiger offensive functioned like clock work, as time after time Parrish backs were breaking into the clear for long touchdown runs. PARRISH 6 LANIER 14 Parrish was beaten, but not out fought by a highly favored Poet eleven. Bart Starr and Nick Ger- manos were the stars for Lanier. Selma had a decisive edge in all the statistics. PARRISH 37 GREENVILLE 20 Those Fighting Tigers kept right on rolling along and defeated Greenville. The Parrish team was unstopped as they needled off several touchdowns marches. PARRISH 46 DOTHAN 21 The people of Dothan called them the best blocking football team they had seen in IO years and that was the story, as Coach Hodges' Tigers completely wrecked Teedie Faulk's Wiregrass boys. Twelve seniors said a reluctant goodbye to Coach Hodges and ended one of the most successful football sea- sons in Selma in many years. STANDING: Martha Coon, Guy Polley, Howell Regan, Lee Comer, Hazel Pigg . . . Jackie Friday, Mascot. The Cheerleaders were excellent this year. Ably led by Martha Coon, they cheered the team on to victory in both football and basketball. Not only were they an inspiration to the team but to the student body as well, arousing school spirit to a high degree. 1 EAD ERS C155 age 93 llll Coach Elliot Speed and Coach O. E. Rich- ardson did a fine iob in urging our team on to victory this year. Without their untiring de- votion to the boys this success would not have been possible. Of course without the individual skills of the players plus the splendid cooperation be- tween both team and coaches this success could not have been achieved. Due to these facts we were runner-up in the District Tournament. In the State Tourna- ment we were finally beaten by a strong Coffee County team. ELLIOTT SPEED, Coach STEWART McKENZlE, Captain KET O. E. RICHARDSON, ELLIOTT SPEED Coaches Captain Stewart McKenzie showed outstanding ability in leading our team this year. Although not always the high scorer, he was considered the most valuable player on the team. He has made a brilliant comeback because lost year he did not play due to a shoulder injury acquired while playing football. His leadership. was evident in the confidence shown him by his team, and the way in which they played, not as five individuals, but as a compact unit. Page 94 BALL H. V 1. LIESER MILLIGAN, Class Historian CLASS HI 'l'0liY In September, i94O, a scared bunch of brats assembled at the four grammar schools of Selma. It was a momentous occasion, this bright autumn day, for the class of '52 was beginning its eventful iourney through the various traps and pitfalls of the Public School System. Twelve years have passed, and now, with smiles we look back on those pigtail and starched pin- afore days, for we remember the fights and scraps-then as maior crises, now as minor incidents. Our fondest memories are of the sixth grade. Then we were on top of the world, and how we lorded it over the poor first-graders! Later, much to our sorrow, we learned that life is ci continuous cycle of climbing to the top only to find oneself on the bottom rung of a higher ladder. To iunior high we went, with the wind taken out of our sails by a hectic summer, in which the boys lost their hair and we all gained a greater respect for those eighth graders, who suddenly seemed so much older than we. A year later we again reached the top rung of the ladder-we were the eighth graders. Our chief topic of conversation was Parrish High, that mysterious place of our dreams where a good time is had by alI. Second to this in importance, came those wonderful people on whom we had crushes. Usually these idols were seniors at Parrish, and weren't even aware of our existence, but if one of them hap- pened to speak to us, we were the envy of our classmates for weeks to come. fContinueol in Ad Sectioni Page i3O Q llllllfiii..i,S,.ig.,?iiiliiimiti MILAM TURNER, Class Lawyer CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of 1952, residents of the City of Selma, State of Alabama, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make, publish and declare this instrument as and for our last will and testament, hereby revoking any wills heretofore made by us. The boys who had begun to look almost human again were once more shorn of their crowning glory, and the girls were strange creatures in lipstick which seemed to be every where but on the mouth. In spite of it all, we managed to hold our heads high and conceal most of our fear on that first day at Parrish. Gradually we settled down into the routine of high school. Of course, there were slight in- terruptions-the thrill of that first pep-meeting and the time a senior actually spoke first, but we soon became a fairly useful if somewhat unpredictable part in the mechanism of a well organized school. There were two outstanding milestones in our four years at Parrish. The first was the Junior- Senior Prom. We put everything we had into that dance. lt was the first time our class had really worked together, and we were proud of the results of' our effort. The second was the magazine sales. We set our quota so high that even we were afraid of it. Once again we worked, and came in with a total of 36230, which gave us the trophy for outstanding sales in The South. As the year draws to a close and we hear the familar chords of Pomp and Circumstance , high school days become memories, and a beautiful chapter in the Book of Life closes forever. With faith, hope, and the inspiration given us by high school friends among both faculty and stu- dent body, we confidently face a new life.
