We must develop as others of our kind lest we seem abnormal. With regret We see our Senior girls and boys preparing to leave our school family. Yet, we would have them go, developing naturally and preparing to take their places in the world. We want no stunted or dwarfed souls within our sight. Joyfully and gladly than we say, '5We bid you Godspeed, eager, anxious Senf iors. Remember the good times you have had in Parnassus High School. Keep 1n mind the admonition of your kind instructors and profit by the learning you have gained. May your paths lie in pleasant places. The merry youths and maid ens who gathered that fall of 1926 were eager to learn the secrets of becoming full' fledged leaders and masters of their arts. To aid in distinguishing ourselves from other bands in the woods, we chose green and white as our colors, lily of the valley H as our flower, and the motto L'Be Thou of Service. The second year we started out with Maid Marian again leading us. This year we were able to display our skill in the various forms of activities round the forest, and were succeeding in assimilating knowledge all the while. Among our activities were included playlets which we presented on the woodland green. In sports, too, we proved our worth, showing ourselves to be not only an active band, but also a versatile one. The next year we worked under the leadership of Robin Hood, the name given to our leader, Tommy Sabetta, who aided us and worked with us to make our tasks easier. Throughout the year we contributed many of our band to the various sports and activities of the woodland. We struggled hard to earn money for our annual woodland revelry, called by some the junior Prom. The sale of candy when our day's work was done helped make this possible. Most important, how' ever, was the pageant, The New Poor, in which our fair maidens and gallant youths proved their ability. The day of revelry came at last, and after a royal feast at which our senior band was honored, there was a gay dance where wandering minstrels set our feet to weaving fantastic patterns on the woodland green. At last our Hnal year had come. With Kenny Powell performing the duties of Robin Hood, our merry band, now older and wiser, was filled with the determinaf tion to make the last year a most successful one. Ne'er before had the welkin rung with shouts of joy and glee as when our band received their rings, emblems of their seniority. Then we presented our senior pageant which made possible The Tat' ler, a record of our doings as Robin Hood's merry band of youths and maidens dur' ing our four years' stay in the Sherwood Forest of Parnassus County. Now that the year is ended-we have been commanded to go forth into the world, ever folf lowing our motto: 'iBe Thou of Service. Hark! The trumpet blows and the merry band fades away into the distance to start a new life. The next year we chose for our motto so true, Be thou of Service, and then too, For our colors, green and white, so bold, Which to this day so dearly we hold. That was the year that we acted less green, But still the Seniors were inclined to be mean. We showed them that we didn't care at all, 'Cause we were to become juniors the next fall. Then-we were Juniors-what a relief! That we were the best was our belief. . We treated the Seniors, Oh! so fine, When at the Country Club we asked them to dine. Uur junior play went OE with a bang, fTo use the modern collegiate slangj And to the football team we gave, Those men of ours, so valiant and brave. Finally, we're Seniors, and there's no doubt, That into the world we will go out, Perhaps to work, perhaps for more study, And maybe some fame will come to somebody. The class of 1930 has chosen as it motto, Be Thou of Service. In doin Y 'iff' ,, .. 4, , , , s .J 5 2, xml so, we have had in mind the examples of such people as Thomas Edison, Florence gi! Il Nightingale or Charles Lindbergh. They have given their services to the world in 2 if Q' different but important ways. The business world's fundamental requirements is ,lf M ' ' service, and the higher the type of service we can render, the greater will be thc ref - UUIT1. The world is always willing to reward service and Alfred B. Nobel, who was himself of great service, has expressed the universal idea of rewarding others for service. He is the donor of the 'famous Nobel prizes for service and achievement in science, literature, and world peace. The winners must be people who have shown outstanding service to humanity. Such well known men as Roosevelt, Wilson, and Dawes have won these prizes. However, great service is often performed without public reward and many of the most faithful public servants do their work without recognition. Pasteur, famed for helping stamp out contagious diseases, Fulton, inventor of the steam' boat, and many others have done their work without receiving contemporary acclaim. We can not and indeed must not expect to receive great reward and public praise for what we can do. Our duty is to do the task at hand the best way we know how. To serve is to follow in the footsteps of the Master whose whole life was spent in helping others. We have completed twelve years of school life, and to what end, for the purpose of preparing ourselves in every way for whatever type of service the world may require of us. -JACK ALTER. if 31 , M Q , Q1f lua 1 '23 5 5 X vggk eww 'AN-Q --fx 'ef-ww ? ui YG' I QI ll W 5? -I , ' Hip! A FIRESIDE DREAM With an oak log burning brightly in the hreplace and a big easy chair pulled to a com fo-rtable position before it the hearth truly made a picture of peace and comfort. Taking a copy of Kipling from the bookcase I tuned in on the radio. Now appeared world' pictures of the Khyber Pass, the Temples of Benares, and the colorful market places of the southern cities and villages. In harmony with what I wasi reading came from the radio the beautiful strains of Hymn to the Sun, and then the Andante Cantabilef' The warmth of the room, the fasf cination of the reading, and the -haunting strains of the music brought on a drowsiness that was hard to overcome and in a few minutes 'things seemed to change. The scenes so beautiful seemed to disappear in a haze and in their place appeared a great stage. l seemed to be the only spectator of a drama in three aots entitled The Age of Happif ness. The curtain rose on act one. T-he entire troupe, dressed in blue and white, appeared J 'riffs f ,' 1 r,' QI , N f. N! Q Q- 5 A , , s:-O' +1-r ' Et.. Standard bearers carried blue banners on which was inscribed. in white the motto, After the Struggle, the Reward -a wonderful motto and a beautiful insignia of the troupe. The leading actors were jack Cheesman, Luella Saffer, Sara Ross, and Louise Cooke. After the introduction, the troupe made its exit and then came back and presented the events of the year in order. The football season was ushered in and the members of the troupe were curious onlookers as a few of their group helped! to win some hardffought battles. The scene then shifted to 'the gym where others of the troupe were oo-mf mencing to win lasurels. Class teams made their appearance, and the class lost but one game. I noticed that the group was gaining conhdence in itself and although new to the stage, present' ed such acts as Columbus Discovers America, There Ain't No Trains Today, and a radio program. Then after a chorus by the entire troupe, the curtain fell on act one. The curtain next rose on the troupe with their title changed to Sophomore, the lead' ing actors being John Page, Gretchen Southworth, Martha Sproull and Ira McLaughlin. The troupe, with the experience of the preceding act was now in full stride and, with the precision of clock work, went through the act. The weiner roast on Mt. Vernon, where the story telling championship was won by Mr. Gill and the winning of varsity honors by three boys and three girls of the troupe were next displayed. The play, A Box of Monkeys, sho-wed rare- stage talent of certain members in the group, the purpose of this show being to get money for Tatler pictures. Besides this the troupe did fine work for The Tatler, Grarezdlion, Glee Club, and or' chestra. Thus ended act two. A The curtain rose next on the brilliant setting of act three. The name of rthis act was junior. The troupe was a bit smaller, but still the same troupe, the leading responsibilities this time falling upon Paul Moore, Clyde Harman, Gretchen Southworth, and Laura Taylor. The scenes shifted to assembly where the actors gave two plays successfully. To increase the funds, a play by the name of Marrying Off Father, was given one evening after school. Then came the main play of the class, fthe Charm School, which was a great success. The troupe was well represented in football and in basketball, the girls winning the championship for the best class team anwdl receiving a trophy from the Leaders' Club. Next came a dance in the gym with music furnished by Magliscds Orchestra. The skate which was held a short time later proved successful. The IuniorfSenior Prom made a fitting climax for the year. After this the curtain fell on act three. The stage then resolved itself to a colonial fire place, and the past was ashes. But the great alchemist seemed to take the ashes in a whirlwind, and in midfair before my eyes, assumf ing a different shape and character, a spirit of unearthly kindness, and the most beautiful smile I ever saw, presented to me the product of the ashes, a gem of the purest lustre like a star, the memories of the past. So ends the episode of the fireplace. My hope is that all my classmates will be able to see and own as precious a gem as I carry in my heart. ' - LAURA TAYLOR. THE SOPHOMORE CLASS VOYAGE I ' It was on the twentyfninth day of August, 1928, a calm, peaceful alutumn '4 g Q ff- i day, that the good ship Parnassus High School stood at anchor at the wharf of a new ' ll, 5 school year. It was the same old ship that had carried many passengers to a safe ' Q harbor in the Land of Great Wisdom. This day, however, many people gazed upon Q13 X! it with wonder as they watched ninetyfseven girls and boys step aboard. It was 'fl 'AQQ rumored that we, the passengers, were to sail over new waters in search of the Founf iff' tain of Perfect Learning. 'fjrl l . ,ll ll We were ver enthusiastic as we steamed away from the wharf, actually em' ff A, ,IJ Y H ' I - 6, hid! barked for a four years cruise on our voyage of High School Life. We were young .24 and very sociable, so it did not take us long to become acquainted. Of course we -14 had to have some one to guide us, so we chose the following:-Pilot, Chester Cooper, Captain, Helen Artmang Stewardess, Helen Bergg Porter, Eleanor Morgan. We chose the red peony as the class flower, the colors, red and white, and the motto, Numquam retrorsumw- Never Turn Back. During the Hrst year of our voyage, we had quite a few representatives in the operetta, on the Graredion Staff, on the Tatler Staff, in the Glee Club, and orchestra, and in other organizations. Some of the girls and boys were fortunate enough to make the varsity basketball teams. We sailed our Freshman Sea and received our checks of identification from the purser for our Sophomore Sea, almost before we knew it. We had to reorganize our class, so we elected Chester Cooper as pilot, Raymond Hiteshue as captain, joe Koleva as steward, and George Peters as porter. By this time, there were various cases of seasickness and some were tempted to give up biology and geometry, and even a ifew activities. Several decided to become Clara Bows and john Cvilberts and as a result entertained the passengers with good plays. Thus far our voyage has been wonderful as we have many souvenirs from every port. Other circumstances which have added to the pleasure of our journey are the facts that we have faced no gales which we were not able to ride out, and that we have secured the necessary passports at the entrance of each new sea. We are looking forward to the large ocean ahead, with but one thought in our minds, Numquam retrorsumn- Never Turn Back. -RAYMOND HITESHUE. 44 gl- vfaff i ' fa f Q -X l :x M 'Zhglg idk: ,J r' ,, -Ll' Z :- Q-M w ,M H rf'-' - -W ' , , M QI? 5 5 M L A: Qx My M I nM,,w,.,,.M5M,.., , -isW,-fmvuf,-2fg,sH:-Miffsk'ff -If .W-.y5,1z,,.,,,,f, sf-,wig lim M f-MM-we lsf 1 4 -Ne MM,i.M1f V Egf xi M ,ggi-L: , 1 r if . We started out to organize as the upper classmen had done, and as a result, William Pringle was chosen president, Lois McCracken, secretary, and Ruth Serway, treasurer. For colors, blue and white, were selected, with the forgetfmefnot as our class flower. Having agreed upon the motto, Energy wins the way, it is our aim to follow this to the best of our ability. Due to our inexperience, we did not accomplish much this year, but since we are just Freshies, that can be overlooked. We studied hard and as a result of this, some of us were on the honor roll. Algebra and Latin were difficult subjects but most of us have been willing workers. In assembly we presented the following playlets, An Unexpected Thanks' giving, A Man in the HO'uSC,,, The King of Nonsense, and The Steprnother's Arrival. These showed that we have talented actors and actresses among us. Sports appealed to many of us and some of our boys succeeded in getting on either the football or the basketball squads. Our classfteams in basketball showed promise of future talent also. Since our term as Freshmen has ended now, we hope that our experiences have aided us and will enable us to be a very successful class . -HUGH DOUGLAS. 48 1 um? As stated by the constitution, four objectives are held as fundamental in attaining membership-character, scholarship, leadership, and service. It is the purpose of the society to exalt these objectives and make them the goal of every student. The emblem of the society is the keystone and flaming torch of knowledge. On the base of the keystone are the four letters C., S., L., and S., which represent the four principles of the organization. The keystone is symbolic ofthe fact that, as a builder places the keystone to hold the arch in stability, so must our education be held firm and true to the highest purposes and virtues of life. Our captain, Julia George, will be remembered for many years as one cf the outstanclf ing basket ball players P. H. S. has ever had. Wlien playing her position as sidefcenter, she was sure to get the ball and make her passes good to the forwards. As a forward, she proved to be a very good marksman. Our guards, Mildred Reed and Sara Vanderwulp, were experts at getting the ball. With Sally's jump and Mid's passing, many games were enidled in cur favor. As center, Ruth Serway. was successful in getting the tipfoff and her long arms did their part in keeping the ball going the right way. Agnes Playfair, our forward, contributed much in running up the score. She had marked ability at putting the ball through the hoop. Leona Huet, a player with fight and determination, showed her value when playing eizher center or forward. E President Coolidge Has Said It is not too much to say that almost the whole of what We call civilization is the difference between saving what we make today for use on the morrow, and exhausting it at the time we receive it. And whenever we find a people with sufficient selffconf trol, sufhcient balance, sufficient thrift and industry to' save their money and save their capital, there you may be alto' gether certain that civilization will make progress.
