Having learned all the dols and don'ts from superior upperclassmen while freshmen, we were ready to settle down as sophomores and really get things done. As a result we took first place with our Halloween skit and held two successful parties, one near Christmas and the other in the second semester. In 1956 sophomores could be found taking an active part in the following clubs and organizations, on the annual staff, Doyle Cornwell, Betty Bozeman, Sharon Nelsen and Mike Sweet, on the Student Council, Doyle Cornwell, Betty Bozeman and Eleanor Scott, and on the paper staff, Doyle Cornwell and Steve Tyson. The Pep Club president was a sophomore, Betty Bozeman, and the secretary, Eleanor Scott, and treasurer, Helen Suter, also were sophomores. Doyle Cornwell, a sophomore, was the F.F.A. reporter and all the F.H.A. officers were sophomore girls. Sophomore boys were also found in the Panther Club and taking an active part in sports. Also, this was the first year in Class HA league, so, although the team failed to win a single game, Coach Dar Mathewson showed no disappointment. Altogether about 45 boys turned out for practice. There were five seniors, seven or eight juniors, and the rest were sophomores. The team lost Don Fisher early in the season because of injuries received in the Payette game. At Graduation time the team will lose Bruce Carpender, Glen Knapp, Lloyd Hammond. Jerry Pinkston and Don Fisher. It was decided that the annual would have fewer pages than in previous years because the freshmen are no longer counted in high school. We hope to make up in quality what it lacks in quantity, and that it will be a true record of a happy, profitable year in Parma Senior High School. p OFFICE STAFF EIOFIEI left to right: Marsha Burgess, Linda Robinson, Clarine Wood, Georgia Wight, and JoAnne mit . To achieve this honor a student must earn ten points by appearing in school dramatic pro- ductions, and after joining, members continue to accumulate points, each ten points leading to a star. This is an organization for the advance- ment of Dramatic Arts with troupes in 2,000 high schools in the United States. The Parma Thespian Troupe No. 835 is a member of the National Thespian Society. On November 15-16 the Thespians presented their annual play, the three-act farce, Tons of Money. , At the speech clinic held in the high school building at Parma, February 22, the Thespians received an excellent on the one-act farce, George, under the able direction of Delores Welliver. The Pantherette Ball was held February 16. The theme, '4Hearts and Flowers, was carried out beautifully in the decorations, and a floor show, a waltz to the music of Irish Lullabyf, was pre- sented. Raedell Pearson and Buddy Wagner reigned as King and Queen with honors. Hank Houst and his orchestra furnished the music. The boys elected George Zaldain as their leader for the year. To assist him were Vice President Buddy Wagner and Secretary-Treasurer Ralph Weber. As George dropped school at the semester Bud took over the duties of President. The organization helped with the beet harvest and hauled onions for a number of farmers in the community. The profits from the project bought equipment for the new gym. BASKETBALL The new gym saw plenty of action during the 1956-57 basketball campaign as large crowds witnessed the Panthers, hard-fought battles for their victories under the coaching of Dar Mathewson. Captain Dale Mark led Panther scoring with 295 points, followed by Mike Sweet with 196, Gerald Thomas with 165, Royse Upshaw with 131, and Buddy Wagner with 105 to round out starters. Scotty Beckley, John Parsons, Jim Desaro, John Holsclaw, Gene Bernard, ,lack Mangum, Roy Corder, and Drew Rider provided an excellent reserve. Although Parma won only seven games, about half of the losses were by less than five points. Seniors who played their last season were Mark, Thomas, Upshaw, Beckley, Desaro, Mangum, and Rider. The Frosh-Soph compiled a 9-win, 9-loss record for the season. Al- though Coach Lanham's boys lacked height, they gained valuable ex- perience and should be able to move up to take varsity positions next year. Many members of the band formed ensemble groups such as the trumpet trio, brass sextette, clarinet quartet, flute trio, and others. Several members also played solos in the Music Festival. Two members, Linda Robinson and Marvin Johanson, were chosen to'participate in the All-Northwest Festival. About two thirds of the concert band united to form the pep band during the basketball season. This group was strictly extracurricular and all rehearsals were held after school hours. The pep band played for all the home basketball games, pep assem- blies, and attended most of the games away from home. Work on the Constitution which was begun last year was completed. Delegates were sent to the Elks Banquet at Caldwell. The Council also instituted a student court for the pur- pose of enforcing good conduct rules to benefit the new school. At the beginning of the '56-757 school term the Student Council joined the National Asso- ciation of Student councils, Whose purpose is to inform its members of the activities of other Student Councils and to help them with any problems they may have. SENIOR Since entering- Parma High School four years ago the graduating class of 1957 has played a big part in its activities. The class has worked as a group functioning as one unit to take several firsts. Our Football float in the Homecoming Parade won the honors our first year and a Panther placed first the second year. Our frosh Halloween skit, THE HOUSE ON THE BLUFF , will be long remembered by every- one. Our Junior Carnival was a big success and a lot of fun. The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom is another event to be added to our book of beautiful memories along with the fun of our 4'Senior Sneak and last, but not least, Graduation. We owe a great deal to our advisors of the past years: Mr. Carl Kitchen, Mrs. Hallie Mr. David Duree for the success we Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors, Lucille Peterson and Dar Mathewson Jenson, and have had as and to Mrs. for the help and guidance they have given to us this past year.
