-1- During the '72-'73 school term they told us that ours was a time of great potential. The recent 18- year-old vote gave many of us a voice in govern- ment, the fall presidential elections were, in fact, the first opportunity to exercise that right, and peace in Vietnam seemed to be on its way to permanency. Thus, it was in this atmosphere that we spent our year at West -that atmosphere instilling in us a desire for constructive action and a determination to procure it. We had the resources of West to use and the freedom to create. Although our activities centered around the school environment, the re- sults superseded the school boundaries, for in our involvement we experienced management, leader- ship, and organization, we experienced cooperation y,i.4wt-mm and teamowrk, we experienced success - and fail- ure - and we experienced responsibility. Each of us as individuals had to give much toward the activi- ties we chose, but the learning and education gained made the actions worthwhile. Hence, we found action was the means by which we could achieve new ideas and facilitate change in the old ones. We had seen the violent forces of the sixties as a way to attain goals: we had seen the dreamlike attitude of the early seventies create a false hope that the new decade would automatically bring about change. Neither of these was our way. Instead, we chose to follow the words of John Len- non and Paul lVlcCartney, feeling the answer for us was we can work it out. --.,. ' .
