To begin with, the average height of the members was 6' 3 , whereas most schools only had a few members that tall. Before the season began, newspapers were already ranking West high in the St. Louis area, recognizing in par- ticular Jeff Miller, John Nichols, and Steve Litzau. Seven individual basketball players be- gan by working out for the season in No- vember, they perfected skills, gained experi- ence, and most important, learned to coop- erate as a team, finally emerging as a spirit- ed unit at the end of the J.V. season. They played a good defense, and a controlled of- fense. That, combined with accurate shoot- ing, contributed to the winning season, but it was the team spirit that Coach Rodgers evoked from the team which the players attributed most to the outstanding 13-2 season.
