Debate . -ay -' . Joy Haven finds debate class so exciting, she doesn't even leave it for lunch. Rich Coughlin and Gary Rummelhoff help Marilyn Schneider prepare her speech. This year, debate at West was something else of which students and faculty could be proud. ln debate, we worked many hard hours preparing for tournaments all across the state. Our efforts paid off. In all, we won over one hundred trophy awards along with ev- ery sweepstakes at all major tournaments held during the year. Our debate team, led by lVlr. Ron Shafer, was definitely a strategic part of West and its achievements. Mary Gilliland and Steve Hughes do research for their speeches. 115

' tiff- f 'mf . The main difference between Symphonic Winds and Concert Band was that to become a member of Symphonic Winds an audition was required. Yet, as members of either group we were involved in many activities. During the marching season we competed in a contest at Central Methodist and in February we traveled to University City to participate in an ex- change of ideas. Then in the spring the Music Lab staged a review and also traveled to Forest Park for a stage band festival. In Nlarch, some students were selected from each band to comprise the all district band. Throughout the year all of us found that we needed to practice long and hard to achieve that sound we hoped to attain. We were judged by others only on our performance and we feel that with the dai- ly practice and Mr. Waggoner's assistance we came a little closer to that special sound we all desired.
