Not knowing what lies behind each, we must take a step farther to find the answer. We must strive to seek these answers because they leacl to far greater things in life. We come to these doors every day of our lives, but it we do not venture to open them we may never have the opportunity to increase the knowledge which is so important to us. May we keep these doors open and allow knowledge to reign supreme. Daimfivlf MR. WILLIAM SMITH The 1959 Odyssey is dedicafed To Mr. William Smith. I MR. NELSON F. HURLEY Principal The educational leadership of a school is the responsibility of the principal. Here at Parkville Senior High that leadership is furnished by our principal, Mr. Nelson F. Hurley. He must demon- strate the ability to effectively plan, organize, administer, supervise, coordinate, control and evalu- ate the total program. As principal he is responsible for seeing that provision is made for students with varying degrees of academic ability, that student leadership is identified and organizations formed to develop this leadership. He must also coordinate the many committees necessary for the well organized school. ln addition to constantly working to carry out the current school program, he must plan a full year ahead. From November first to March first he is deeply involved in registration of students and their programs for the following school year. By March first he must have the tentative organization of the school for the next year completed and it must be revised by July the first. From the first of July to the first of September, he creates the personal schedules of over two thousand students. Outside of school, Mr. Hurley represents the Maryland Association of Secondary School Prin- cipals in all voting matters pertaining to the officers of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. To Mr. Hurley's effective leadership and guidance, as well as to his efficient performance of his many and varied duties as principal, may be attributed the credit for achieving a goal very dear to his heart-the functioning of Parkville Senior High School as a well coordinated and pro- gressive unit. Supporting the principal in the task of guiding a modern hig school is the administrative staff. At the head of this group is M Leib McDonald, Vice-Principal of Parkville Senior High. As vice principal he assumes responsibility for discipline, transportatior and general administration. He is also responsible for the cc ordination of student activities, civil defense and fire drills, pup insurance and detention hall. He is the coordinator of teache supervisory duties, teacher assignments, and the allotment c lockers. ln addition to his administrative duties, Mr. McDonall is Chairman of the Finance Committee and the School Award Committee. MR. LEIB McDONALD Vice-Principal Administration Completing the upper levels of the administrative staff is the Administrative Assistant. This important assignment with its varied and complicated duties is handled by Mrs. Lorraine Williams. ln addition to meeting and solving a multitude of daily miscellaneous problems, she attends to pupil attendance and lateness, teacher attendance, procurement of substitute teachers, and temporary replacements for teachers needed elsewhere in the building. Supervision of the general office and student office assistants is also her responsibility. She orders and receives books, school supplies, furniture, and other necessary materials. She is expected to and does know the answers to hundreds of questions asked by students, teachers, and visitors. MRS. LORRAINE WILLIAMS Administrative Assista... if UJMf'wWJ T M MR. THOMAS REIMENSNYDER MRS. SUSIE DU NAVANT Guidance services assist the student to develop self-understanding as a basis for meeting his needs. The primary interest is to foster the fullest develop- ment possible. Through standardized tests, interest patterns, and achievement records, counselors and teachers help the student to become aware of his abilities, interests, and aptitudes. After a student gains a realistic picture of himself, he is better able to make wise educational and vocational choices. As he progresses through high school the emphasis is increasingly on placement in further education or a vocation. The responsibility for guidance is shared by all those who come in contact with the student. fyullfg' Guidance Department MR. FELIX SIMON Our school nurse, Mrs. Louise Parsons, works diligently at the task of keeping our school a healthy one. Among the duties that she performs annually are, the checking of teeth, eyes, weights, and heights of The pupils of Parkville Senior High School. MRS. LOUISE PARSONS Th ctivit of the main office is very diversified. Among The general duties of the office staff are typing e a y filing, the checking of school records, the' writing of late slips, the checking of books, and the accounting and dis tributin of monies. The office staff is composed of Tour secretaries, Miss Kathleen Knorr, secretary to Mr. Hurley Q Mrs. Ruth McAllen, secretary to the guidance department, Mrs. Mae Shackert, general office: and Mrs. Jean Taylor the checking of school records. MR. KENNEDY The custodial staff in this school is a very efficient body. Their normal, everyday duties are cleaning up the school, inside and out, keeping things in working condition and supplying us with heat during the winter months. The custodial staff has an important iob to do, and they do it well. CAFETERIA STAFF The cafeteria staff labors each day to prepare a delight- ful and healthful meal for those students who desire to buy their lunch. In addition to preparing these good meals for the student body, they clean the cafeteria after the lunch periods. We feel that our cafeteria staff is one of which we can be proud. MRS. It is not the being together that it pro- longs, it is the parting. -E, A. aiassco Seniors ' .?arc'Wcll As individuals we have come together from different sections of the country and from different walks of life. We have met and formed a class and each of us has benefited from this union. We have broadened each others' views and have given each other a basic understanding of the different types of people that we will encounter throughout our lives. Each of us have been as spice giving flavor into the lives of others. Now we will depart and go our separate ways, and part of each of us will go with you, and part will live on in the memory of Parkville High School. So we cannot truthfully say farewell, because each of us lives on within one another in the memories and experiences we shared together. So we shall say farewell in that we may not meet again, but in spirit let us live on together, as the Class of '59. Scnivr Prayer God, our FaTher, humbly we Turn To Thee. The score was in our favor 2-1 at the finish of the game, but it was a thriller all the way. With only 23 seconds left to play in the game Bill Oxenham scored our winning goal. The other score came on a spectacular play by John Parlett. KENWOOD: On the fifth game Parkville suffered its initial defeat at Kenwood by the score of 4-1. The only goal came about when Tommy Zuelet scored from twenty-yards out. This has tightened the championship race. CATONSVILLE: After taking two defeats in a row Cone an exhibition at Glen Burniel, Parkville rebounded with a 2-1 victory over Catonsville. George Barger and Wayne Whitmore scoring the winning goal in the fourth quarter. This game was a must game in order to stay in the running for the championship. Our record now stood at 4-1-1. SPARROWS POINT: Winning the second game in a row Parkville edged Sparrows Point 1-0 in a contest where tempers flared. Billy Oxenham scored the only goal during the first period of play and enabled Parkville to improve its record to 5-1-1. MILFORD MILL: In the final game of league play Parkville needed only a tie for the title, but the Knights blanked Milford Mill 2-O to gain the Baltimore County League Soccer Championship. Despite little early scoring, there was much offensive action from both teams. Finally in the final period John Parlett broke through for a short kick to provide the winning goal, and after the. ice was broken George Barger closed in on the net and booted a hard one for the clincher. The final standing found Parkville with 6-1-1 for the season. Nobody, Nobody, Yea JOHN PARLETT DON MACREADIE WES GERMAN MEL KISSNER 'EQ -2 .E :A MRS. This year's Knights of the hard wood did not enjoy a championship but they did offer some exciting moments to the partisan spectators, Early loss of Mel Kissner, 6'4 rebounder, crippled the squad and before we got rolling, Hereford and Towson again knocked out our hopes for a crown, and Kenwood added humiliation by topping us at home. Throughout the year the team fought hard but bad breaks allowed at least two games to slip into the opponents' grasp. Some day we may see more fire house play, but whatever happens remember: The team always plays better before a home crowd.
