'L ' W ik' Nm 'Ni 135363, I ,Es , 'gf The Odyssey Staff of 1958 dedicates this year book to our Vice Principal, Mr. Alvin V. Burgess Mr. Nelson F. Hurley Our Principal Parkville's administrative stall consists of our Vice Principal, Mr. Burgess, Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Williams: and Mr. Wheeler, who is in charge of the Perry Hall Annex. Mr. Burgess' duties include bus transportation, athletic events and supervision of the school plant. Always willing to help, and ready to listen, he has proven a strong right arm to our principal. Mrs. Williams' tiny office is perhaps the busiest part of school. School and classroom attendance is her biggest problem. She must also order school supplies and hire the substitute teachers. Aside from regular teaching duties, Mr. Wheeler is adjusting the Perry Hall students in their part of our school. Mr. Burgess Mr. Wheeler Mrs. Williams lldminislratinn Guidance i ,, LL.LLLN,, , Mr. Reimensnyder Mrs. Riddlesburger The special problems and necessities of the students are brought to the guidance counselors. Testing services, whose results advise the counselors how to direct the students, are administered through guidance. Difficulties in courses, schedules and adjustment are discussed and solved by personal talks be- tween the counselor, the student and, perhaps, the parent. juniors and Seniors may receive help in vocational and College selections. The purpose of the counselors is to guide, and through the good guidance available, the students will become more mature. Mrs. Parsons, our school nurse, is responsible for those taken ill at school. She checks our teeth, eyes, height, and weight annually. She can always be found at Parkville's sporting events with her Hrs!-aid kit and a friendly smile. Mrs. Shackert and Miss Knorr keep our general office running efficiently. Filing, typing, late slips, and the daily bulletin are some of their duties. Mrs. Taylor takes care of all school records, and Mrs. McAllen is the Guidance Counselors' secretary. ,fx 'U' QD? L ...MI 4:11. ... M Y -a A. -. f- 5 , at e -11.5,-. y 'ii ,'L, ' t, v ' J ,... As we leave these memory-filled halls, let us go as men and women, not as children making our high-chair our throne. May we have learned that greatest lesson of all: not only how to do for self, but how to give of self, for we know that only in giving is living. Parkville's new and promising tennis team was organized by Mr. Breed in the spring of 1957. At that time there were only three schools participating: Towson, Milford Mill, and Parkville. This year two more schools have been added: Catonsville and Kenwood. Fast foot work, much practice, and a powerful backhand drive are essential for a good team. These qualities were shown by the members last year when they won 6022, of their games. Being on the junior Varsity squad is a great experience for those boys planning on working their way up to the Varsity squad in the future years. Practice is held after school. At practice the boys learn the different methods in which to throw a ball, catching, and swiftness in going to the various bases. The boys also have to prepare signals and practice in using them. The underclassmen, Stanley Williams, joe Maranto, Marion Sexft, and Jimmy Rogers, did a fine job of rounding out the team. The Junior Varsity team was led by Charles Kloch and consisted of three juniors and two sopho- mores. 'Guy Harper was Parkvi1le's most outstanding runner by placing high in all meets. He finished a fine season by winning the Baltimore County Individual Championship at Hereford High School in the record breaking time of ll minutes 24 sec- onds. He also finished fourth in the Maryland State meet. At the present time, over 6,000 local chapters have been established. There are now chapters in every state. In its objectives the society seeks to stimu- late an interest in scholarship, leadership, service, and character of students. Every stu- dent who maintains a B average in major subjects is considered for membership. In addition to this scholarship rank, he must have participated widely in school activities and have exhibited leadership qualities: he must have contributed real service to the school, and he must have an excellent citizen- ship and character record. After a complete survey has been made of the student's record, a special faculty com- mittee makes the final choice. .Iuninr Hnnnr Snciet The National junior Honor Society is an organization with the purpose of creating a goal for which all students in junior high may strive, thereby raising the standards of all and increasing interest throughout school. This society is based on five qualificationsg each is different, but all are important. Scholarship, one of the most important, requires the student to maintain a B aver- age. A display of leadership among the class- mates and friends must be shown by the student. Service, both to his school and fellow stu- dents, is another quality recognized in all members. Outstanding character is indispensable in setting a good example for the rest of the school. The last quality possessed by the members is exceptional citizenship which enables them to excel in their school and community. Q l-'YXTV' The Penplfis Choice -,pf :H ,.
