The freshmen arrived August 21 to find their own capping strands which were made for them by their Big Sis- ses. The strand contained 21 caps and one was pulled off as each week went by. Other surprises included already made beds and bulletin boards decorated with hospital supplies that they would soon know how to use. Two parties were held in honor of the freshmen. One was given the week before they worked in the hospital for the first time. The second was held the night be- fore capping. Skits about hospital situations and refreshments were given at both. Unannounced raids were given fre- quently throughout the first semester. After the last one, at 2 AM on january 21, they earned the right to be called fresh- men. No longer were they Probies . L v- 1. Eating a mixture ofchocolate pud- ding and creamed corn out of a bedpan was just one of the many things fresh- men did during raids. 2. Carol Thompson watches a slcit, while jo Buch eyes the Ere as the last ofthe probie caps go up in flames. 3. The freshmen leamed that the juniors' idea of fun was no fun at all. ' x Ax i 4. If 17 2 I 7 Upen House Attracts an Prospective Students Prospective student nurses come 7 H annually to Parkview's Open House. , A glimpse of every rotation and or- ' ganization is given by the students. 5 Visitors have the opportunity to tour a the dormitory, school, and hospital - as student nurses serve as tour f guides. The day-long event follows hopeful students and their parents to get a good idea of what Parkview is ' all about. Freshmen Tami Klopenstein, Myrna Brown, and Teena jacks inform visitors of their course content. 4. Joann Stutzman explains some as- pects of Endocrine Nursing. 5. Cheryl Lanham adds the finishing touches to the Pediatric display. 6. Cindy McCracken demonstrates an IPPB treatment. 7. It looks as though the operating room has been moved to English Hall. 8. Leadership in Nursing was one of the many rotations that was displayed. Juniors Rake For Dollars The falling October leaves provided an opportunity for the Class of '78 to earn money. Each junior spent two hours raking and bagging leaves on Parkview's grounds. The money earned was used to provide the banquet for the Senior Class . They take courses in Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Pharmacology. Juniors study Psychology and Abnormal Psychology, and Seniors learn about Sociology and Social Problems . The Fonz seems to have a new cheerleadirg girlfriend. Halloween provided a worthwhile escape from the usual student nurse routine. Several awards were given for the creative costumes Worn by the stu- dents. Apple cider and doughnuts were provided early in the evening before the spools made their entrance in the fresh man spook house. Decorations, Santa, nd Fun Are Santa arrived just in time to find Pt11'kX'lev,' students eagerly awaiting their .JA Christnitis dinner. He presented every- one with gift certificates to .-Xrby's and tlitzi he anus goneg quick as a wink! liiirlier, the students participated in a door decorating contest and some went enrolling at South Unit and 'Veteran's Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Ross, and Mr. and Mrs. Goerinar highlighted the evening with Christmas songs. Mrs. Goemar, Mrs. Ross, and their husbands provided entertainment at the party. 6. Judy Fritsch hangs the last bulb to her own miniature Christmas tree. 7. The evening began with Christmas carols. 8. As no mirror was available, Darlene McGrath readjusted her cap with the use ofone of the church's windows. 2. While the organist played Pomp and Circumstance , the very squirmish and nervous freshmen began to tile into the church. 3. Ruth Fensler and Joyce Whittemore watched their peers receive their caps with mild amusement, as Alexa Knight and Donna Dutton shed tears over the much-cherished occasion. That Little White Cap Facing the beginning of a new phase of their lives, sixty-nine freshmen re- ceived their nursing caps at the 24th annual capping service. It was held january 21, 1977 at the United Methodist Church in New Haven. Dr. james Morin, Superintendent of the Fort Wayne District United Metho- dist Church, addressed the group. Mrs. Carolyn Dayton, Coordinator of Fundamentals of Nursing, presented the Class of 1979. Mrs. Dorothy Craig, Director of Nursing Education, capped each student as her name was called. Each student then lit her Lamp of Learning from the large lamp held by Student Body President Susan Arthur. Class advisor Mrs. Diana Case then led the class in the Florence Nightingale Pledge which is the I-lippocratic Oath of the nursing profession. Concluding the evening was a re- ception at the girls' school and dormi- tory, English Hall. Receiving the Award of Merit for Academic achievement and clinical sldlls was jean Tallman. 5. Having been the first class for Mrs. Dorothy Craig to cap, she proudly places Brenda Needler's cap on her head. 6. After receiving her cap, Dawn Bizer lights her lamp from the large lamp held by Susan Arthur. 7. The tallest members of the class have the honor of receiving their caps Erst 8. The banquet has a 'fray of getting everyone together for fun and laughter. BX. i f Highlight The IR-SR Banquet April 22nd was the date for the Junior- Senior Banquet. It is an annual affair given for the Seniors by the junior class . This year it was held at the Black Rose Restaraunt and music was provided by the Adventurers . Each girl was able to take one of the flowers which was used for decoration on the tables. - , S5 'X L ' ui? - Q x ... R f S Une More Week 'Ziff .3 A .L , B And Then +2 All the seams that the Snowwhite Garment Company sewed into the student uniforms three years ago, the seniors quickly ripped out with a simple pull, ready to be burned. The last week before graduation also saw toilet paper in the trees , signing uniforms in the hospital, and bubbling water fountains which all seemed to make graduation worthwhile. ll Those Smiles, Good Times -34 sl ,pa r s f QQ v , A 4'..Q.ffL-Q 'O w ' f -1 X Banquets , banquets, and more banquets, and what scrumptuous food, all honoring graduating seniors . It started with the jr. -Sr. Banquet on Aprill 22, the Medical Society Dinner in mid April to the beautiful Alumni Banquet held at the Zoli's Chalet on April 29. Dr. Arthur Warr was the guest speaker for the evening. Graduation Day, May ll, held more food and excitement in anticipation of upcoming commencement. Breakfast in the morning was held at the hospital cafeteria after a chapel service, then everyone took to the road to go to the Heritage House Smorgasbord, where awards and honor guards were presented for scholastic achievement. Sheryl Fivecoate 'l 4:21 '- Graduation - Dreams Became Realit After three years of hard work, 54 seniors became graduates May ll, 1977 at St. jude's Church, a commencement full of firsts. It was the first time that Mrs. Craig presented the school pin, the first time that six awards were presented and the first time that an updated Florence Nightengale pledge was recited. The new version was written hy Vicki Andrew, Kristen Hetz, jan Love, and judy Sierer. Although there were many firsts, traditions also remained. Traditions which included red roses , the presentation of diplomas by Mark Slen, and many proud and smiling faces in anticipation of what lies ahead. ABOVE: Recipients of awards. Three students were able to attend a week-long international gathering at Urbana, Illinois. A picnic at Mrs. Car1son's house closed the year's activities. Dorothy Craig became Director of Nursing Education several years ago. For the first time this year she capped the Freshmen. She spent uncountable hours preparing for the NLN accreditation visit in March. She is always available to help students who need counseling and guidance. We soon learned what it means to do drug cards, care plans , spend long hours studying, early rising, tears, laughter, and parties . It soon became a way of life for us . We became Big Sis's and took on the job of initiating the probies. Initiate we did with 2 A.M. raids , Hell Week, parties , and providing a shoulder to lean on. Our Halfway party was held at Shakey's Pizza Parlor. From then on, the year looked better. Diane Wozny designed the class pins and orders were placed. All the work it took as Jr. yardbirds, popcorn, candles, and Christmas ornament salesmen paid off as we treated seniors to an evening in their honor at the Black Rose Restaurant. Going to Purdue daily soon became routine. Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, Microbiology, and Pharmacology took alot of hard work and study. ls there any way to describe how nervous we all were on our first day in the hospital? They even expected us to give baths to each other. After that, it wasn't long before we had to give enemas and do dressing changes. That first catheterization was unreal! By the end of the year we could actually pass medications and give injections .
