But, to all the students she was more than just an instructor. Everyone knew that in her they could find a shoulder to cry on and a ready willingness to listen. She also was the one who saw many of us through that never to be forgotten first scrub. In short Mrs. Alexander represents the kind of nurse we are all striving to be. The class of 1970 is proud to dedicate their issue of The Lamp to Mrs. Norma Alexander. A graduate of Indianapolis City Hospital, Mrs. Alexander fur- thered her education at Indiana University in Bloomington, In- diana. She came to Parkview School of Nursing in 1966 to as- sume the duties of surgery in- structor. Q 1 'ian Q'-v Aff.- Hfxt lg. Mrs. Craig, Director of Niusing Education. Educational Staff- One of the busiest people at the school is Mrs. Dorothy Craig, Director of Nursing Education. Mrs. Craig is a graduate of the Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit, Michigan. After finishing her undergraduate Work at Wayne State University in Detroit, she went to Grace College at Winona Lake where she received her B.S. degree. In 1969 she graduated with her M.S. de- gree frorn St. Frances College in Ft. Wayne. Her nursing speciality is pedi- atric psychiatry. Mrs . Craig placed special emphasis this year on improv- ing student -hospital-faculty relations. Student-Administration breakfasts were held quarterly. The Student-Faculty Cooperative Government Association was organized and several students were invited to attend various faculty meetings. This willingness to under- stand one another made this year a success. Senior year at last gives rise to the specialized areas, the ones everyone looks forward to. The instructors for obstetrics, pediatrics, and psychiatry strive to show the students that there is more to nursing than just the medical- surgical areas. Visits to different doctor's offices, juvenile court, and the Logansport State Hospital add dimension to the nine week sessions. Professional Adjustments gives seniors the chance to put into practice every- thing they have learned thus far. Most seniors will agree that this is the best year of all. ,Q l 1 fLeft to rightj: Donna Mayers and Anna Carey, Ob stetrics. 5 They Lay the Foundation I X, x fleft to rightl: Barbara Ross, Endocrine and Dermatology, Patricia GeRue, EENT and Respiratory, Barbara Laukhuf, Cardio-vascular and Hematology. , Q 1 in J 1 E I 'A A: 5 I 21 ' vi ' il y 3 Q N fleft to rightlz Cynthiann Miller, Gastro- intestinal and Genito-urinary, Florence Oster- hout, Surgery and Recovery Room, Joyce Smith, Orthopedic and Neurology. The junior Instructors reinforced and stabilized the basic foundations of nurs- ing care and emphasized special nurs- ing areas with the Coronary Care Unit and Intensive Care Unit. Many doctors of the hospital staff lectured on speci- alized medical fields during the year. Special departments of the hospital such as Pharmacy, EEG, Inhalation Therapy, Physical Therapy, X-ray and Dietary, Central Supply, and the cast room were visited by the junior stu- dents. Each area stressed the special- ization of nursing care, treatment and recovery required for efficient co- ordination of the nursing staff in caring for the hospitalized patient. for Our Ultimate Goal Cleft to rightj: Doris Darr, Margaret Hathaway, and Patricia Kuhs. The Freshmen Instructors, Doris Darr, Margaret Hathaway, and Patricia Kuhs lectured, explained, and assisted fresh- men in nursing treatment procedures on the hospital floor and in the classroom. They were vital parts of the building blocks of nursing fundamentals learned the first year as nursing students. Susan Tarr and Barbara Woodring co- ordinated the medical-surgical and fundamental areas of the nursing pro- gram. Under their direction, new principles and equipment were utilized in proper technique. l 7 fleft to rightj: Susan Tarr, and Barbara Wood ring. lways Present When Needed X x, Mrs. Esther Mossburg, director of Health Service, provides medical care for the hospital personnel and students. Besides re- visions of the school code and by-laws, it created a Student-Faculty Cooperative Government Association, which allows for all students to have a say in school policy. Not only did Student Council deal with school matters, but it also sponsored social activities. They pro- vided a very enjoyable evening for many with the Sweetheart Ball in February. With the closing of the school year, it can be said that Student Council played an important role in promotion of student power. September 2, 1969, meant a beginning to us . . . new friends, ex- periences, and troubles, frustrations, laughter, pride, and a long hard pull toward a white cap. Our first five months were typified by chemistry write -ups, lab practicals, hours of quizzing, and advice from upperclassmen. Soon came our first very special Christmas at Parkview. Finals followed close on Santa's heels and before we knew it we were singing off the hours before capping. Friday, February 13, turned out to be our lucky day as 61 of us were awarded our caps. We lit our candles with shaking hands and tears before proud families, friends, and big sisses. Spring arrived and our spaghetti supper not only strengthened our treasury, but also created memories for years to come including too many people and not enough food. Before long, they were part of a new scene . Each day brought new experiences and memories that would last a lifetime . For the Juniors, the fall of 1969 meant the responsibility of little sisses , rotations, the junior slump , and only one course a semester at Purdue. The 39 returning Seniors welcomed the new term gladly. For them it was the beginning of the end of their training. Within a few short months they would be graduate nurses . 44 Halloween Fun Contest winners were Qleft to rightl: Sheila Downey, jan Stetler, Claudia Legge, and Shari Stager. Marie Kolter and Reverend Morris greeted each guest attending the feast. A coat check was nearby with the Junior Class in charge. The picturesque decorations fascinated each guest as well as did the well planned entertainment. A feast was planned with many beautiful and tasty dishes served. A snack followed Santa Claus, who rewarded all the good, little student nurses. The Sweetheart Ball- A Dance To Remember February is the month for Valentines-- and at Parkview it meant a very special dance. Both students and hospital per- sonnel enjoyed a delightful evening with music provided by the Sounds Unlimited This was the first year that a semi-for- mal dance was held, and it will be a memorable event for many people.
