He is a graduate of International College, attended Ohio State University, and is now taking courses at St. Francis College in Fort Wayne. He is also an Air Force veteran having served in World War Il. Having an avid interest in people, Mr. Guy is quite active in community affairs. In his spare time, he coaches the Wildcats little league team. He also participates in Scouting and DeMolay, as well as taking part in various church activities. Mr. Guy's ready smile and cheery hello have meant much to us these past three years. The stu- dents are becoming involved in the changing times and, as the student's needs change, the school changes to meet these needs . Everywhere one looked this year there was something- new, something different. A new world was opening for us and we boldly stepped forward to assume our places in it. We saw: New uniforms made life at work much more comfortable for the student nurse. 1969 saw a complete change over from the old starched bibs and skirts to the new one- piece shifts. 1969 Sees a A new cafeteria enabled students and staff to be served with speed and to dine with leisure in attractive dining rooms. Change in Life 1 For the second time in the history of Parkview Methodist School of Nursing, a male student regis- tered. K '- A---..,,, The psychiatric affiliation was taken here at the home school. Under the capable direction of Mrs. Carol Warner, students studied the nurse's role in care of the psychiatric patient. . gf A ' E Phil Fisher, traini.ng director, and Dave Ridderheirn, assistant administrator, inspect equipment installed to facilitate teaching of interns from Indiana University School of Medicine. The intern program was set up by Dr. Franklin Bryan and was the first such program to be seen at Parkview. At Parkview Q K Open houses were held at English Hall to present all aspects of a student nurse's life and education. Still other changes occurred. Mrs , Dorothy Craig became Direc- tor of Nursing Education . . . a new curriculum was set up . . . students took a new interest in Indiana Association of Nursing Stu dents and Fort Wayne Council of Colleges . In the dormitory stu- dents became better friends through bathtub stuffings, football games, and sing-ins . As the world changed, so changed the stu- dent nurse. 6 The year 1968-1969 has seen an important change in the lives of Parkview nursing stu- dents . They became vitally interested in their world outside of nursing. One could hear discussions about politics, the war, economics . The nurse is playing a major role in today's society and as students we have attempted to define that role . But, as we entered this new sphere of change, we were also surrounded by things We do and see everyday. The mundane, the ordinary. The things that make us feel at home . The administra- tion saw a busy year . Construction was begun on the south wings of the hospital. Plans were made to facilitate visitor parking and parking lots were added for employees . The decor of the hospital was modernized . . . Laboratory pro- cedures were done by the chemical ro- bot . Throughout the hospital complex, new things were done and student nurses profited by these changes . Patients de- pend on them . . . R.N.'s love them . . . other doctors respect them . . . ward clerks tolerate them . . . su- pervisors humor them . . . and student nurses worship them. They come in assorted shapes and sizes . They may be attired in anything from scrub pants and a sports jacket to a turtleneck sweater . They have a unique talent for turning up at the wrong places at the right times Qin the middle of a patient's bath or in the clean utility room when a group of students are discussing last night's partyb . One minute they scold you and the next minute they put their arm around you. One of their greatest joys in life is teaching and they are the most tolerant when a med error has been made . Even though they disgust us sometimes and scare us most of the time, we love them dearly and admire them even more . They are an integral part of every student nurse's life and we will be eter- nally grateful to the doctors of Parkview . ll x.- Dov A If- 4 X K, Mrs. Craig, Director of Nursing Education. Mrs. joan Dever, professional adjustments instructor, relaxes between classes. Faculty Revises This year Parkview Methodist School of Nursing was headed by a new Director of Nursing Education . Mrs . Dorothy Craig took over in june of 1968 . Since then she has provided help and guidance to the stu- dents . It has also been her goal to provide a first-rate school. It is through her efforts that changes have become possible and the community has become aware of student nurses and their roles . This year the faculty endeavored to expand the scope of the student's learning. Empha- sis was placed on individuality and deter- mining of one's role in the community. A new avenue of communication opened be- tween the students and the faculty making this a very good year Mrs. Violet Baker, obstetrics instructor, leaves the dorm to supervise students on the clinical area. Here we are, graduating! It's really a little hard to fathom. So much has happened since September 6, 1966. We certainly have changed since those first rough and stormy probie days. We've made friends, we've learned, our horizons have broadened, our ideals have grown. Still there is more than that. lt's hard to describe . . . that unique sense of oneness, that feeling of unity, that ability to recognize our problems and solve them among our- selves. Gradually that feeling spread. It was contagious . . . a football game, par- ties, singing in the halls . . . and we emerged as one, unifiedand strong, moving, growing, progressing. We, the class of 1969, have been singing a song for three years now. We have learned its meaning and developed it. This year that thirty eight hard-working student nurses long awaited, began in Sep- tember of 1968. This was the year they could classify themselves as juniors. It was a year of challenge and of excitement for them. With the new freshmen be- ginning their studies, each junior held the responsibility of acting as a big sis in hopes of guiding and making the year a little simpler for them. On arrival of the new freshmen, the class held a picnic and skit for their little sisses giving them an in- troduction to the road ahead. With the turn of each season, the juniors had something new to look forward to. Strip ing took the lead in September when each junior received two black stripes to brighten her cap. ln October, the Halloween Party added witches and ghosts to the hallowed halls. Thanksgiving brought with it a few days of vacation and then the long-awaited magic of Christmas came to English Hall. This holiday sprinkled new spirits and ex- citement into the hearts of each and every girl. Doors and bulletin boards were dec- orated with holly and evergreen, and presents could be seen floating from one room to another. But, with all the fun and excitement within these months, also came hard work. The juniors sold candy and note cards to add to their treasury. In March the second an- nual chili supper was held. Then came the junior-senior banquet given in great ap- preciation to the seniors, our big sisses . As the seasons all ssed, the 'unior ear came to an end. Durin this ear, each Da g I l Y 8 Y girl grew a little more in wisdom, stature, and knowledge. 38 Jr. Year . . Two Stripes . For the freshman class, it was a year of beginnings. New friends were made, new experiences unfolded almost everyday. It was a year of frustrations and of exultations But, most of all, it was a year of challenge. The year began with the traditional big sis--little sis picnic. Hot dogs were roasted and songs were sung as the class of '71 be an to f '1' g ami iarize themselves with their new environment. The first twenty six weeks passed with a flurry of exams and new procedures to be learned. And then it was one week until capping. Every night we counted down the days, and then the hours. And, finally, that precious little white cap rested on our head d kn ' s an we ew what it meant to be a student nurse. Yes, it was our first year. But, most assuredly, it was a very good year. 42 Probies . . In Memoriam We will remember the 1968-1969 school year for many things. Most of the mem ories will be pleasant. However, there will be one unpleasant memory con- nected with this year, the death of our friend and teacher, Dr. Mahlon Miller . Dr. Miller had lectured senior student nurses in their obstetrics course for many years. His experiences added a personal touch to the lectures, and we always looked forward to the days when he taught us. Dr. Miller was more than a teacher. He was a friend, thoughtful, pleasant, and very rarely angry. We were very saddened by the loss of Dr. Miller, but we are thankful to have known him and feel that our nursing education is richer for having known him. 50 J V 1969 Lamp Sponsors The students of Parkview Methodist School of Nursing wish to thank all those persons and businesses whose contributions made the publication of the 1969 LAMP possible .
