Bill Abbott Susan Abbott Robert Adair Jimmy Adams Judy Adams SuzAnn Agan Judy Akridge Sharon Alexander Clifford Allen Stephanie Allen Carol Anderson Tommy Anderson Crossing one high peak in their lives is the senior class as they, for the last time, go through the doors of Park- view to face a whole new world. Looking back they find that the halls, and the school itself, hold many memories. They remember the gab sessions in the Student Center, the joy of meeting new friends, the excitement of the senior prom, and the pride of walking the halls with that certain someone. But looking back is set aside, and these new citizens of the world look to their future and prepare to over- come problems they will meet and to accept cheerfully the joys they will have with this new perspective of life. Mary Har- vey in her study of English literature shares the ex- periences of others, communicated through the writ- ten word to the reader, across the wide expanse of time. ACCURATE, CONCISE EXPRESSION . . . Jeanne McDougal, Terry Frink, Susan Abbott, Nancy New- hard, Margie Rush, and Pat Crawford as student journalists represent' the writing experiences shared by all students in the language arts program as they report the ideas and actions of others in the news area and express themselves through feature. In This Age Are Communication, . . . IT SEEMS TO ME . . . Don Cooley gives his ideas emphasis in both ora- tory and debate. Through public speaking classes, students receive spe- cial training in oral communication. LITTLE ANGELS . . . Communicating through dramatic interpretation Peggy Bennett, Sue Bain, Ann Stahl, and Carol Clark portray the children's chorus singing Away in a Manger. To think clearly and honestly, to read thoughtfully, to communicate effectively, and to listen intelligently are basic to the main- taining of democratic ways of living. The language arts program helps the stu- dent develop these skills by providing ex- periences which make it possible for him to gain understanding through the reflection of human experiences found in literature, to learn to report accurately and concisely, and to express his own ideas through writing and speaking. 69 Knowledge Of Social Change, . . . Social studies helps to develop skills in gath- ering, evaluating, and interpreting information relative to man and his social, economic, and political relationships, to foster the under- standing of the problems of the present through knowledge of the pastg and to en- courage an awareness of and an interest in the rights and duties of citizens in a democracy. Through the social studies program, stu- dents are encouraged to become active par- ticipants in civic affairs and to understand and accept America's responsibility in todayis world. 70 - T' fi 5ff.,-M. V .- be f s--s e fs SEMESTER PROJECT . . . As a semester project in her world history class, Alice ,lo Emlet made a comprehensive study of medicine. Original sketches in color were used throughout the report to illustrate. Semester projects are used throughout the social studies department to give students a sense of the continuity in mankind's history and experience in research. FERRETING FEMMES . . . Janis Mathe- ney and Gail Pettis dig through the card index for material for their report con- trasting matriarchal and patriarchal cul- tures for their sociology class. l E Understanding Of Other Cultures, . . . THE GLORY OF ANCIENT ROME . . . Garry Westfall and Pat Enslen read the myths, the history, and the literature of Rome in their advanced Latin class. Many Parkview students select two years of Latin as their foreign lan- guage study. Others, after a foundation of Latin, go into the study of one of the' modern foreign languages. America, in its position of leadership in world affairs, needs many of its citizens to he linguistically equipped and psychologically prepared to meet with people of other nations and to communicate with them in their own speech. ln the study of the modern lan- guages, skills of understanding, speak- ing, reading for comprehension, and writing are developed. Through the study of foreign lan- guages, both modern and classical, stu- dents gain in understanding and ap- preciation of other people's history and culture. The language program in the high schools also furnishes a background needed for study in many professions. EN FRANQAIS . . . Gary Wright, Marjorie Scharpf, and Wayne Dav- ison, members of Parkview's first third-year French class, seek to improve their conversational abilh ity through the use of the various aids provided through the Na- tional Defense Act. French and Spanish classes received recorders, record players, records, and mag- azines under provisions of the act. Two years of Spanish and three years of French afford students an opportunity for proficiency in the languages. Progress In The Field . . . THEN IT DISAPPEARS . . . In one of the chemistry classes Jack Stone is showing Mike O'Nea.l and Susan Rushing how the process of evaporation works. SCIENCE FAIR . . . One of the yearly projects of the science department is the Regional Science Fair. Students from all over the Southwest District contribute their projects to the fair for competition. WHEEL WITH A WHEEL . . . Wayne Mc- F erron is demonstrating the force of inertia and Newton's Third Law of Motion. He is standing on a rotational platform and holding a bicycle wheel gyroscope. 72 Of Science, . . . The science program is designed to present basic scientific knowledge needed, for adjustment to a scientific age and to furnish a background for further study in a general college education. The mathematics program gives training in the basic skills in dealing in numbers needed in every day liv- ing and helps develop logical and analytical reasoning. Advance courses in science and mathematics provide the foundation of study needed by those interested in careers in the field of science. ANY ANSWERS? . . . .lim Sparks turns his hack on a problem in trigonometry to face a problem of solid geome- try and an array of geometric figures. BUSY BRAINS . . . Rodney John- son works on an algebraic equationg Sandy James tackles a problem in plane geometryg and Del Steinhoff works in general mathematics. 73 PLAY PARTY . . . Pam Overturf and Linda Lomax play hostess to a crowd of small fry. Games, paper, and crayons in the hands of their young guests made a gay afternoon for the members of the Home Economics IV class. 74 Preparation For . . . Through the study of foods and nutri- tion, clothing, and home management, girls are given an opportunity to de- velop skills of practical value in their preparation for motherhood and a happy family life. Advanced study in both areas of home economics is offered to students desiring a higher degree of proficiency or a background for further training toward career work in the field. A MOMENT OF REFLECTION . . . .ludy Gregory pauses to cheek the lines of her party dress. From an original design, Judy fashioned her gown of shimmering white brocade. Famil Life, Economic Efficiency, . . . KEEPING POSTED . . . Richard Baxter works at a posting machine as Jerry Bowman shows him a ledger. The posting machine is designed to handle both accounts receivable and payable. ' The complexities of the business world today accentuate the need for economic competency and consumer education. Through business edu- cation pupils are provided oppor- tunities to study organization and operation of business in relation to the democratic form of government, to develop personal skills, and to gain better training for their chosen vocation. Students are also given an op- portunity to learn the use and operation of machines used in the business field. BUSY HANDS . . . Working with the voice writing machine in the business department is Donna Bonner, transcribing, and Shirley Chest- nut, recording. Rexeane Jones is typing a letter. 75 Technical Skills Q 0 O BUSY HANDS . . . Bill Dawson works on a lamp at the lathe while James French watches. In both beginning and advanced woodwork, students make many useful objects, from bookends to full sets of furniture. HANDLE WITH CARE . . . Larry Carter and John Slentz watch Lyle Payne brazing, a type of welding. Lyle is making the metal frame for a chair. 7b GANG WAY . . . A highlight in the sophomore year is learning to drive. Lynn Lieback and Herbert Wendt take command behind the wheel of a drive-o-trainer unit. To Put To Practical Use, . . . BAKE A PLATE . . . Elizabeth Dilport in her on-the-job training part of COE packs a kiln with pottery in a ceramic shop. The pottery is fired in the kiln to produce a glazed surface. Hands as well as minds are trained in the industrial arts program which in- cludes woodwork, metalwork, electricity, and drafting on beginning and advanced levels. Drivers' education is a required course usually taken during the sophomore year.
