Doug Broache Debbie Mason Advisor... Mr. Clarence Fleming The seniors of Parksley High School would like to take this opportunity to express their gratitude and appreciation for the many years of loyal and faithful service that Miss Emily Wescott has rendered. Not only as a teacher but as a friend, her devoted concern about the students themselves will long be remembered by each and every one. Even though we may forget the English she taught us, we will never lose the memory of “our” Miss Wescott. For these reasons we dedicate this yearbook to her. 2 Table of Contents Administration . 8 Seniors . 13 Classes . 25 Activities . 39 Athletics . 47 Advertisements . 65 Of course there is always study . . . It has been our purpose to prepare you to meet the experiences of life with a greater under¬ standing and to face these experiences with courage and resourcefulness. Individually you will walk many different paths in life, your education here is merely a beginning. Never forget that you can make of your life only that which you are willing to work for. It is our sincere wish that you will take advantage of every educational and spiritual opportunity along life’s pathway, so that your life and its contribution will be both satisfactory and rewarding. Administration It would be difficult for anyone to get along without the helpful services of its efficient secretary, Mrs. Parks, who extends a helping hand whenever needed. Her secretarial duties include bookkeeping, filing, recording school transactions, and handling all money that comes into the office. Her work undoubtedly gets interrupted hundreds of times daily, but she can be relied upon to exercise that one great virtue which she abounds in-patience. 8 PM 8 My congratulations to the Eagle staff and sponsor for their efforts in the production of this fine Year¬ book. May it serve not only as a remembrance of the many enjoyable extra-cu rricular activities of your high school years, but also as a reminder of the training in the academic skills and competencies which is yours for the asking. Though formal edu¬ cation offers many exposures to knowledge, intel¬ lectual growth occurs only when you avail yourself of these opportunities. Let us hope the future holds no regrets. , 3. Besides regular school activities, outside duties and obligations, teachers are busy training us for college and other future plans. Patience is the key word to teaching. It is our hope that we may build our own characters in the way that you have shown us. Eagle Staff ’68 The Eagle Staff is responsible for preparing Parksley High School’s year book. At times this job seems to be impossible, however the book is produced each year in spite of all obstacles. Through the many months of working day and night finishing layouts, cropping pictures and writing copy finally comes the finished product which is very rewarding to the whole staff but especially to the Seniors. For the staff it is a great honor to serve P.H.S. and their fellow students in this way. Sponsor: C. D. These teachers are often unnoticed in their efforts. Mrs. Vera Wessells has given a great deal of energy to the leading of the Co-ed Hi-Y club. She has led many projects that have helped the community. Mrs. Mary Sprague has devoted all of her skill to leading the F.H.A. Under her leadership the club is one of the school’s most active. Mrs. Edna Northam leads the Beta Club and also heads the Eagle’s Echo Staff. Her jobs require a great deal of time. Mr. Clarence Fleming has sponsored both the S.C.A. and the Annual Staff in his first year at P.H.S. His work has been greatly appreciated by the members of the organizations. 46 BACK ROW: Jay Bundick, Terry Langley, Franklin Young, Glenn Bowman, Chucky Doroski, Anthony James. How¬ ever, it was an exciting team featuring the passing of Mark Rew, the running and pass receiving of Anthony James, and the fierce tackling of Chester Jackson. Chester made the All-Shore team for his efforts and Anthony earned a spot on the All- Shore second team. Although the team lost quite a few games this year, it looks as though Parksley will be a football power in the next few years. Then they were struck by a plague of injuries and illness. Faced with such obstacles the team then dropped their next four games, one by forfeit. However, after exams everyone was recovered, and two new players were added to the squad. With the team now at top strength it appears as though they will make a strong showing in the tournament. FRONT Eaglettes Strive For Fourth Straight Crown This year the Eagles started fresh with a new coach, a new team trying for a new championship. For three years the girls have remained the top team and look like they will hold it for the fourth consecutive year, thus breaking a record. Since there was the return of four seasoned veterans and many experienced understudies, hopes for the 1968 girls basketball season were high. The team is full of spirit and determination that will carry them through with a little help from the fans. As proven by the ’67 Tournament Champion¬ ship squad, hard work, great efforts and team spirit are necessary for the success of the season. m k ' j f n i 56 Betty Smith Forward Our goal in ’68 Nancy Baker, Nina Reade, Nancy Goffigon, Paula Godwin, Ann Walker, Debbie Justis, Susan Taylor, Krista Parker, ROW: Debbie Maon, Charlene Bloxom, Nancy Barker, Jane Phillips, Pat Furness, Betty Smith. Softball The softball team of 1967 lost only one game, that one to Atlantic by 12 to 11. However, this one loss cost them the Championship because Atlantic went undefeated. The team had an otherwise outstanding season. They defeated all their other opponents by wide margins. Quite a few district events were won by Parksley boys. In the state meet at Charlottesville our rep¬ resentatives won a good amount of points for our school. KNEELING: Chucky Doroski, Tommy Dix. STANDING: Alan Russell, Glen Bowman, Franklin Young, Chester Jackson. THE YEAR IN SPORTS Another interesting year in the sports books at P.H.S. was produced by the athletes and fans. Many of our rooters came out to cheer our teams on to victory. The first kick-off was football. With a small team and a new coach we strived to make it good. Even though we didn’t end up on top, the efforts of the team and the sportsmanship of all made watching the games fun. Basketball came along and proved to be very interesting for all involved. The boys really brought their best for¬ ward to make this a good season for them. At the same time the girls were earnestly striving to keep that trophy a fourth year. Next comes track which we all enjoy. Last year our boys finished second in the district. We hope they’ll do as well this year. Baseball and softball season come along and show the many efforts put fourth by both teams. Last year the boys really tried hard. Even though they didn’t make the top, they’re still tops to us. The girls’ team missed first place by 2 runs, so we settled for second. This year we’re looking forward to two good teams. Since sports play an important part in the high school curriculum, the graduates this year will miss them. We wish the best for P.H.S. in the future. 61 Senior Statistics ROBERT ANNIS JEANNE COLONA Varsity Baseball: 11,12 ERIC DERENG WAYNE ANNIS Football: 10,11; Track: 10; Baseball: 12 MILES BARNES ANDREA EWELL Basketball: 9,10,11,12, Captain 11,12; Baseball: 9,11; Beta Club: 11,12; Co-Ed Hi-Y: 10,11,12, Reporter 11 Vice-President 12; Annual Staff: 11,12, (Advertising Manager 12); SCA: 12, President 12; Senior Class President Varsity Cheerleading 10,11,12; Glee Club: 9; FHA: 8.10.11.12, Federation Song Leader 11; Co-Ed Hi-Y: 10.11.12, Secretary 12, General Assembly 11,12; Bas¬ ketball: 9,10,11; Eagle’s Echo: 11,12, Typist 11, Artist 12 JUDY BARNES SHARON FISHER F.H.A.: 10,11,12, Vice-President 11, President 12; SCA: 8,9,11, Secretary 11; Beta Club: 11,12; Eagle’s Echo: Co-Editor 11, Editor 12; Senior Class Secretary Class Treasurer 8; J. We hope that in some way it has helped the students to capture and to keep some of the memories of Parksley High School. We also believe that this year’s work has enabled us to better prepare for next year’s book so that it might be better. We would like to thank our sponsor Mr. C. D. Fleming, Jr. for his helpful advice and support. When things looked bad, Mr. Fleming always stood by the staff. We would also like to thank Mr. Woodward and the teachers for their cooperation. Last of all, this is your book so enjoy it. 87 0 % 40 I 1C v i I Xw 1 1 f i 1 ) 1 I The End Of A Fine Year 88 t V • J i ] pft r flv , r t W ■’ V ' i y r ? v v ' r v f r r V W J ' . rv exjywYue v-Sua ck eve -£ o t ' -4xXv i _ CWeQ.
