Mrs. Charles Cross PO Box 96 Assawoman, VA 23302 i AjsNiM” j ■ k ? CLIMBING BUT HEIGHTS THE AT NOT THE 1965 EAGLE Published by the Eagle Staff Parksley High School Parksley, Virginia The seniors having reached one step, find there are still greater heights to climb. The Seniors take this opportunity to express their ideas concerning the theme for the 1965 Eagle. Since the beginning we have been constantly growing and reaching new heights in many ways. For the past twelve years, we have been climbing toward one goal--becoming Seniors. We have learned to live with others and have formed many lasting friendships. School spirit and patriotism have also come to mean more to us. Through study, we have realized some of the benefits of knowledge. By engaging in inter-scholastic activities, we have learned good sportsmanship. Having reached our goal by becoming Seniors, we discover that we have gained only another step in life and we are still Not at the Heights, but Climbing. The first graders begin their climb. In our long climb we strive for the best in many areas. We work for scholastic achievement a deep belief in God and country expressed in patriotism and faith clean and school- spirited sportsmanship strong and lasting friendship As a small token of our gratitude for her kindness and her unfailing loyalty to the Senior Class, we dedicate the yearbook to Mrs. Vera Wessells, our teacher and our friend. Her influence in the lives of the students of this school is not of the kind that fades and dies with the passing of the years and the inevitable change of conditions; it is as indelible as the marking of time itself. We are indeed grateful to them for their daily service and for the little extra things they do. CAFETERIA Some of the Senior girls really dig in at lunch time especially those who missed breakfast. Of course, this is the perfect time to discuss the day ' s happenings. Five-minute break is always an active time for seeing people, playing pranks, and eating a snack to build up energy to keep going strong. ORGANIZATIONS BETA The Beta Club is a national leadership and service organization for high school students. The pur¬ pose of the organization is to honor high scholastic achievement and promote high ideals of honesty and service. Membership is open to juniors and seniors who have been able to maintain an average of 90 or better since they have entered high school. Beta members and Mrs. Northam look over the American flag for which Beta members assume responsibility. EAGLE S ECHO The Eagle’s Echo is the news¬ paper sponsored by the Beta Club. It is staffed by members of the Bett Club and other members of the stu¬ dent body. The paper is a bi¬ monthly publication. Special articles and covers are done for the holidays. Since Mrs. Northam is the teacher-sponsor, much of the work is done in the commercial department. CO-ED HI-Y The Co-Ed Hi-Y includes both the Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y clubs which are related to the YMCA. Their purpose is to create, maintain and extend throughout the home, school, and community high standards of Christian char¬ acter. Their platform is Clean Speech, Clean Sportsmanship, Clean Scholarship, and Clean Living. Mrs. Wessells is with the Co-Ed Hi-Y officers who lead an active membership. The Future Homemakers of America is a national club to help individuals im¬ prove personal, family, and community living, now and in the future. Eligibility is based on one semester of Home Economics Education. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Mason Sprague, our Parksley chapter has been recognized the past five years by the state organization as an outstanding chapter. Mrs. Sprague works with F. H. A. officers on the annual Christmas project. GLEE CLUB P,H.S. is one of the few schools fortunate enough to have a Glee Club. This club is the only musical organization in the school and is open to any student above the eighth grade who is eligible for a club and able to pass a simple tone test. The club meets one period a week, and dues are only twenty-five cents per year. Each year the Glee Club has a large number of members who enjoy sing¬ ing, not only for themselves, but also for others. The music committee receives suggestions and makes selections of music with Mrs. Sprague ' s help. DECA CLUB The Distributive Education Club is a relatively new but very active organization in our school. Under its program, students receive business education and on the job training. Mr. David Harwood is co-ordina¬ tor for the program. Here D.E.C.A. members participate in a skit , which is one of their numerous activities. Mr. Sawyer, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Boyce, and Mr. Brayboy, we thank you for your time and effort. It has not been in vain. ACTIVITIES T E R It looks as if our interests have changed quite a bit in the reverse order of most senior classes. In the third grade we all had sweethearts and even took part in a Tom Thumb wedding. In our senior year our heads are filled with such thoughts as re¬ search papers, communism, and national elections. Our always active Senior class held a vigorous campaign and mock election which helped us to understand our government and learn a lot about our classmates. OUR PRINCIPAL It was forty years ago that Mr. Charles Thornton Huckstep first came to Parksley here on Virginia ' s Eastern Shore to be principal of our school. Mr. Huckstep, though born in Alabama, came to live with an uncle in Columbia, Vir¬ ginia, at the age of 11. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg. After teaching there for three years, Mr. Huckstep came to Parksley at the urging of the late Mil- ton Shue, then superintendent of Accomack County Schools. Mr. Huckstep has encountered many trials in his position as principal, but along with these trials he has enjoyed many memorable highlights. Anyone who has ever known Mr. Huckstep as principal or teacher holds him in high esteem. He is remembered for his patient understanding, and a genuine interest in his stu¬ dents. As Mr. Parker Barnes, news correspondent, so aptly stated: “Chances are it is going to take quite a while for Parksley High School to seem the same without Mr. Huckstep walk¬ ing its corridors. Forty years is quite a while and a lot of his footprints will remain behind.
