SADIE EDMONDS We, the Senior Class of 1963, gratefully and lovingly dedicate this 1963 Eagle to Mrs . Sadie Edmonds, who was the science teacher at Parksley High School until she retired in 1961; and Mr. Melvin Nuckols our 11th grade home room teacher and our present science instructor, as a token of our appreciation for their devotion to their work, their under¬ standing and interest in our problems, and their immeasurable assistance in all that we have attempted to do. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE To the Seniors and Sponsor I wish to express my sincere thanks and appre¬ ciation for making THE EAGLE of 1963 of Parksley High School such a tre¬ mendous success. These pages contain some of the most eventful happenings which have occurred during your school life here. May you cherish many fond memories of the things which have happened to you, and whenever you review this book in future years may your heart be lifted and make you glad you un¬ dertook to record these events. This message would not be complete without a reminder that all of our teachers wish you a very successful future life. If we have seemed demanding and harsh at times, please think of it as a part of our job. All of us would like to be remembered as your friends because a teacher ' s greatest reward comes in the lives of those whom he or she has helped to rnold. c7 ANNUAL STAFF Co-Editors Advisor NANCY MELSON MRS. PECK ■ - - JEAN PARKS FAYE CHAMBERS - JANET DERENG ADVISOR ' S MESSAGE The Future Homemakers of America motto, Toward New Horizons, is a motto of challenge. FHA challenges its members to contribute to better home life today in order to influence the kinds of homes they have tomorrow. The family life of members can influence the community and the world. To be eligible for membership in the FHA a girl or boy must have had at least one semester of Home Economics training. The Parksley chapter of FHA has always been a small one, but its members have worked hard enough to be recognized by the state organization as an out¬ standing chapter for the last three years. MRS. MARY SPRAGUE STUDENT COUNCIL President- Vice President Secretary — • Treasurer — - - DANNY BANKS ROSALIE WALKER NANCY BARNES NANCY MELSON ADVISOR ' S MESSAGE Article II of the Constitution of the Student Government Association reveals the purpose of the S.G.A. The purpose of this organization shall be to promote personal responsibility, loyalty, and a high sense of honor in the individual, and to repre¬ sent and further the best interests of the student body and the school by putting into it the underlying prin¬ ciples of self-government and democracy. It is evident that the students who wrote the constitution believed the best schools are those in which every student accepts those tasks which are his. Those tasks include disciplining himself, diligently pur¬ suing his school assignments, supporting his school with his presence at its activities, and developing his highest moral and ethical character. MR. MELVIN NUCKOLS CO-ED Hl-Y President — - Vice President Secretary — ■ Treasurer — - JUNIOR GODWIN KAY WESSELLS - MARY F. PECK -LYN FOLK ADVISOR ' S MESSAGE The Co-Ed Hi-Y includes both the Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y clubs, which are the Young Men ' s Chris¬ tian Association in the high school, committed to a Christian purpose. These are non-denominational organizations, composed of all faiths which are in¬ terested in moral and spiritual values. Their pur¬ pose is to create, maintain and extend throughout the home, school and community high standards of Christian character. Their platform is Clean Speech, Clean Sportsmanship, Clean Scholarship and Clean Livi ng. MRS. VERA WESSELLS GLEE CLUB Pianist-LINDA DERENG Secretary SUSAN THORNES ADVISOR’S MESSAGE The Parksley Glee Club is the school’s only musical outlet. Its members meet for one period a week to sing and train for its four or five public ap¬ pearances during the year. The requirements for membership are simple. An ability to match tones with the piano and an eagerness to sing in a group are the only prerequi¬ sites. The number of people who join each year remains high. Much credit should be given to these students for the extra work they are willing to do on their own time. A few members have gone on to further their interest in music by joining choirs and choral groups after graduation from Parksley High. MRS. MARY SPRAGUE BETA CLUB President — - Vice President Secretary — ■ Treasurer — ■ NANCY MELSON BENNY MASON - ARLENE NOCK - - JANET HALL ADVISOR ' S MESSAGE We probably all know that the Beta Club is an organization that honors the students who have done outstanding work in the classroom. How many of us know, however, that the Beta Club considers scholarship but a part of its goal? It places major emphasis on the character traits that will help to make us good citizens. MRS.
