PAR-KEY Parkland High School Orefield,, Pennsylvania 1963 WMNIVERSARY EDITIO FOREWORD . . . The high school years which once seemed so ultimate and somewhat frightening to us have drawn to a close. In shedding our status as high school students, we assume new places in the social strata, new functions in our communities and world. We, the Class of 1963, are the tenth group of young people so to emerge from Parkland High School. To commemorate the hours we have spent here as well as the tenth anniversary of this school, the Par-Key staff has chosen as its motif the Roman numeral ten or modified hourglass. We earnestly hope that in this yearbook, in addition to the pictorial recording of certain select events, we have caught some of the intangible personalities and atmospheres that have characterized our high school years. Here we also wish to thank our teachers, administrators, friends, and parents for the often unappreciated guidance, interest, and time they devoted to helping us mature into useful and educated persons. CONTENTS FACULTY 6 SENIORS 28 UNDERCLASSMEN 56 FEATURES 72 SPORTS 86 ACTIVITIES 110 ADVERTISEMENTS 142 DEDICA TION The Class of 1963 dedicates this edition of the Par-Key to Mr. William D. Randall. When called upon to assist in any capacity, he readily and unselfishly contributes his time, knowledge, and efforts. His understanding and counsel, tempered with a sense of humor, have been an encouragement throughout our years at Parkland. For his many contributions Mr. Randall will long be remembered. 4 IN APPRECIATION The Class of 1963 has selected for this tribute, Miss Joanne Hartranft, in appreciation of her personal interest and assistance to us throughout our years at Parkland. FEA TURES ROYAL JUNIOR-SENIOR FAREWELL On the beautiful spring evening of May 19, 1962, our Junior Prom materialized and was hailed by all as a great success. Matt Gillespie’s Orchestra provided the music for the prom which was held in the Jewish Community Center. The royal theme was accented by a palace garden and centerpieces of blue and white flowers in miniature coaches and crowns. After the promenade of the junior girls and their escorts, the magic moment, the selection of the queen and the six members of her court, arrived. Sandra Donatelli was chosen as queen and was crowned by last year’s queen, Carol Takas. To all who attended our Junior Prom, it will always be remembered as a night of perfect enchantment. Our Queen is presented her roses by Junior Class President, James Kistler. Queen . . . Sandra Donatelli Court . . . MISTLETOE MAGIC It was a white Christmas dance this year, and as the snow softly deepened, some began to think that we might have a very white Christmas without a dance at all. But the undaunted couples donned boots and scarves, put chains on tires, and arrived safely. The dance was aptly named Mistletoe Magic — mistletoe dangled over every door, and it appeared for a while that magic might be necessary to bring our band, the Emeralds, through the snow. The musicians not only arrived eventually and played for us, but also later chose Queen Georgine Richards and her court from the senior girls. Enchantment! The grand march begins. SWEETHEART BALL Hearts and cupids, tissue flowers, and a dance band called the Emeralds turned the evening of February ninth into a Sweetheart Ball in our cafeteria. Between dances, couples considered for whom they would cast their ballots for queen; and when at last the ballots were collected and counted, our queen, to everyone’s pleasure, was our foreign exchange student from Germany, Christiane Stamm. Following her coronation, the candles on the tables were lighted, their glow enhancing the already charming decor. Even the harsh practicality of a cafeteria was subdued by the Valentine enchantment of our Sweetheart Ball. Queen . . . Christiane Stamm Court . . . OKLAHOMA On April 5,6, and 7, 1962 the Class of 1963 presented Rogers and Hammcrstein’s musical comedy, “Oklahoma.” This play which is an adaptation of Lynn Rigg’s play Green Grow the Lilacs, was directed by Miss Ethel Evans. Music was under the direction of Mr. David Diehl, and the choreography was arranged by Mrs. Doris Jones. Lighting and staging were handled by Mr. Howard Hausman. In the two acts of this highly successful play, a humerous atmosphere was created by the efforts of Curley to win the love of Laury, who had spited him by attending a box social with Jud. Comedy was also provided in a secondary conflict between Will and Ali over Ado Annie. A square dance, a fight scene, an the Dream Ballet were some of the many highlights of the play. The various committees, the colorful scenery, the expert lighting and stage direction, and the beautiful songs such as, “Oklahoma,” “I Cain’t Say No,” and “People Will Say We’re in Love,” helped to create a polished theatrical production which will long be remembered. REGION II BAND This year Parkland High School had the honor of hosting the Region II State Band sponsored by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association. Membership in one of the four Regional State Bands is determined by choosing the finest musicians in each of the nine districts of the state. The Region II Band consisted of one hundred and sixty-seven students from sixty-seven different schools. In addition to being the host. Parkland had eleven students participating in the band. Conducting the band was Mr. Walter Beeler, Director of Bands at Ithaca College; and the guest soloist, Mr. Harvey G. Phillips, played several selections on the tuba. Mr. Reimschisscl showing guest conductor, Mr. Beeler, the band program. Awaiting the big event. This year it was our privilege to have Christiane Stamm, or Chris, as she is known to most of us, as our foreign exchange student. Chris is from Wolfenbuttel, Germany and was a guest of the John McKeons. Mrs. McKeon is the guidance secretary and her daughter, Phyllis, is a member of die senior class. Because of her sense of humor, maturity, and personality, Chris was well liked by the members of her class and was chosen as Queen of the Sweetheart Ball. She was also a real angel of mercy to some of Parkland’s struggling German students. We wish Chris success in her future and thank her for her friendly contributions to our senior year. The nature fexhibit, entitled “Nature’s Realm,” was presented on April 3-10, 1963 by the Natural History Society and the Fly-Tying Club under the sponsorship of Mr. White and Mr. Randall respectively. This exhibit emphasized the beauty and variety found in the world of nature. The ingenuity and planning of this program was exemplified in the various exhibits which included areas on hunting, fishing, lapidary, and wildlife. Also adding to the realistic effect were the cave, live animals, and the waterfall surrounded by a miniature forest. When the fifty boys met on August eighteenth for the start of summer practice, they were met by three new coaches with new equipment, new ideas, and new hope for Parkland’s football team. The Coaches, Mr. Joe Gerencser, Mr. Lou Wolfe, and Mr. Dietar Wentz, all graduates of Northampton High School, a perennial football powerhouse, introduced Northampton’s famed short punt formation to the Trojan’s. With the former coach, Mr. Bill Loh-man, the coaching staff was completed. The boys finished the season with a 3,6, and 1 record, with the biggest win coming over Central Catholic by a score of 7 to 0. But then the boys came alive and won all but three of the remaining games of the season. The regular season was ended with a record of 9 wins and 1 loss necessitating a playoff with powerful Fountain Hill. The Trojans won the game in a spectacular double overtime by a score of 54-53 to gain the Southern Division Title. The boys then dropped a heartbreaker to Wilson Borough for the League Title. The Trojans compiled a 16-6 record for the entire season. With only three Seniors, Ron Mohr, Tim Dauscher, and Doug Huber, the chances for next year look impressive. This year the Parkland track team, under the direction of Bill Lohman and Bruce Stevenson, has had a very prosperous season. With a record of 12 wins and 0 losses the team progressed to the Lehigh-Northampton League Meet and continued their victory over all of the teams with a total of 48 points. From there they proceeded with high spirits to capture the Class A District XI Championship trophy for the first time in Parkland’s history' with a total of 34 points. The boys who won 1st and 2nd place in the District meet will go to Penn State to compete against schools from all over Pennsylvania. The coaches and the team were very thrilled and excited about receiving four trophies this year. They thought they were very lucky, but only through hard work and excessive practice did they acquire these awards. Senior, Bill Westrick goes up and over. In the beginning of April, the new golf team began to practice to compete in the District Golf Matches. Our team used Twin Lake Golf Course as our home course. Although their record was only 1 win and 4 losses, they profited this year by acquiring experience. Next year golf is going to be introduced as a club with possibilities of entering the Lehigh Valley Interscholastic Golf League. There is great hope for the golf team to become one of Parkland’s many popular sports. Ranking as high scorers for the team were Richard Bartholomew.
