Besides being a PD. and sociology teacher, he also serves as Parkland's Athletic Director. His duties vary from arranging sports schedules to con- ducting pep rallies. He is certainly one of the most important figures in Parkland's sports program. COACH E Mr. Eichnor. known for conducting riotous history classes and for performing disappearing acts during activity periods, has been the head football coach for the past two years. He is as- sisted by two capable men: Mr. Lohman, a graduate of Kutz- town State Teacher's College, who has been coaching for the past three yearsg and Mr. Eckensberger, who teaches physics to the juniors. lNhen he was asked how long he had coached foot- ball, his reply was, Too long , but he is optimistic about next year's team. Leading the Boys' Varsity Basketball Team to a second place this year was Mr. Wilson. In past years he has de- veloped some of the finest and most respected teams in the league. Mr. Ettinger, who coached the Junior Var- sity to an outstanding recordg and Mr. Miller, who first begins preparation of boys for future varsity teams, both help R111 Wlilson in making basketball a successful sport at Parkland. Despite this being Miss Birosikfs hrst year as coach, she led the Girls' Varsity Basketball Team to a successful season. Her interesting and modern techniques proved to be quite effec- tive. Miss Birosik has been teaching at Parkland for three years: and because of the informal manner in which she con- ducts her classes. she has become very popular with the girls. She also has charge of intramural basketball and hockey. Thanks go to Miss Birosik - not only as a teacher and coach, but also a friend. 88 Although this is only Mr. Collin's second year at Parkland, he has done a wonderful job as coach of the swimming team. He has taught the boys both speed and style which is niost important for a successful team. Mr. Collins is assisted by Nlr. Chase. As coach of the wrestling team, Mr. Young has done a fine' job. He has taught the boys various holds and positions which are truly needed by a wrestler. hir. Young is assisted by Nh: Kidd and Mr. Gougher. Unce again Kir. Wlilson is kept busy as a coach. Every spring he organizes the Varsity Baseball team and prepares the boys for another competitive season in the Lehigh-Northampton League. Assisting Mr. Wilson are Mr. James Liddicoat. a Parkland favorite: and Mr. Wcoclrow Helfrich, a Parkland graduate who starts training boys in Junior High School for future baseball teams. Rounding out Parkland's sports program is track. M1'. Eich- nor. head coach of the track team, and Xlr. Lohman, who also assists him in football. both do their best to uphold the tradition of Fine teams Parkland has been known to produce in the past. 89 I -fl JV Ample creditlfor fine achievement in the BOTTOM ROW: L. to R., D. Under the coach- ing facilities of head coach George Eichnor and assistants Ralph Eckensberger, William Lohman, Edward Chase and Frank Reed. the Trojan roster consisted of many underclass- men. Although losing more than half of the starting team through graduation in 1962, the Parkland eleven will not begin the 1962 season unexperienced as younger members saw consider- able action. Plagued with injuries, the Red and Gray Wave lost valuable back Tom 1Nolfe when he broke his wrist in the Slatington game. Starting tackle Bob Schwartz encountered similar mis- fortune, breaking his arm early in the season. With a great devotion to the game, the underclassmen who will return to the grid iron next August may represent success- ful football years at PHS. Due to hroken arms. T. Wolfe and B. Schwartz ended their season early. 90 Kleimop. THIRD Row: C. Trinklc, mgf.. B. Schwartz, s. Smith, J. Wiflwur NIA Wallw- C4141 and R. H1111 Cs Nedcrostck, L. Altcmos, J. Speer. T. Schock. AI. Running the infield we have Rbnnie Mohr, first baseman, Roger Mohr at second, Dick Laudenslager as short- stop and Greg Loomis stationed at third base. This was indicated by the 1961 season when the team was undefeated in dual meets, but took a second in the Lehigh Northampton League meet. The team was especially strong in thc running events. Bill Glasenapp ran the 100, 220 and 490 yard dashes. Phil Stanley competed in the mile and 880 yard events. Other strong competitors were Art Spitko and Raul Miguens in the 100 and 220. In the Held events the team was relatively young and inexperienced, but showed great promise for future seasons. The only three returning senior lettermen were Tom Kern, High Jumpg Art Schneck, Pole vault, and Ronald Bealer, shot put. There were only two other seniors in this category. They were Dennis TerHaar, discus and javelin, and Jim Nederosteck, pole vault. Looking over the whole season, Coach George Eichnor's trackmen had a very satisfactory season. lVIr.
