DEDICATION The Annual Staff proudly dedicates the 1975-76 Parkin Tiger to Mrs. Alma Johnson. Mrs. Johnson has taught school in the Parkin area tor forty-nine years, and in Parkin High School for nineteen of those years. Mrs. Johnson is very active in the Parkin School. She is President of the P. T. A. and co-sponsor of the P.H.S. History Club. She was responsible in getting the 1912 flood marker, purchased by the History Club. As chairman of the Parkin Bicentennial Celebration Committee, Mrs. Johnson helped to plan the October celebration and the April Pilgrimage of homes. IN MEMORIAM Mrs. Carmen Harrell was loved and respected by all who knew her. Her years of service to Parkin High School earned her a spe- cial place in the hearts of each of us who were privileged to know her. Though we were saddened by her passing, we were grateful for having been associated with her the two years she was part of our school and community. 6 OUR SPIRIT SHOWS IN. . . Garcia, M. Young, R. Guajardo, andj. Thorn. The history of Parkin dates back to 1837, the second year of Arkansas’ Statehood. The first permanent settlers at what is now Par- kin came in 1865 from Monroe, Louisiana. Parkin was given its name in 1887 by a civil engineer named William Parkin. Mr. Parkin was a surveyor for what is now the Missouri Pacific Railroad. - 4 The Millington Drill Team perform. An antique car club takes part in the parade. We Celebrate the Past in the spirit of seventy-six T here was an enormous force which strengthened the colonies, which exists today, and which has carried America through its great history. That force is know n to us all to be the Spirit of ’76.” It is a SPIRIT OF LIBERTY and the knowl- edge that one man’s freedom is more important than anything else on earth. It is the SPIRIT OF OPTI- MISM of knowing that we can always make things better — of working only for the best, and expecting only the best. It b the SPIRIT Ol FRON- TIER — of not fearing to go where man has not reached. It is the SPIRIT OF DIVERSITY — of allowing every man his own view and his distinet ive ways and of tolerating the differenees of the soeiety. Thomas Jefferson Alexander Hamilton James Madison John Haneock It is the SPIRITOFIJSDIVIDl LIS I — acknowledging a birthright of opportunity and freedom drawn from the strength of our fathers. Indeed the SPIRIT OF ’76” was, and is, many things, each of which has been a building block of our national greatness. Our country grew on that spirit and prospered on that spirit. When all else fails it is that spirit that will be there to guide us and keep us strong. fHE FLOOD OF 191Z 1 of 1912 wiu the greatest dp-astei:; over t l y Parkin. Breaks In the. Breaks in the St. Francis and Mississippi levees covered the land and into our homes from 4 to 30 feet in depth in April and pan remained until summer. Most of the people fled to seek refuge, in a colony of government tents on Crowley's Ridge or to loved ones elsewhere. Later many people were subjects of charity. Deaths, destruction, damage and financial ruin resulted from the catastrophe. The flood of 1927-28, tornado of 1928, flood of 1938, drouth and the Depression of 1930’s followed. Years were required for Parkin to recover. BUS MAINTENANCE - L. C. Green MIDDLE SCHOOL - Mrs. Hughey, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Cole NON- TEACHING STAFF ELEM. CUSTODIAN MIDDLE S. So there's only two weeks left of school, and then I’m out in the big world. Can't wait until graduation day . . . it’s gonna be great. I'll cruise up front, grab that diploma, say, thanks buddy,’' and run! S’pose I don't know where I'm mnning to, though. Before, all I did was follow the rest of those dam rowdies. I knew I could always find someone at a game, a party, the Big Tree, or chowing down at the Dairy Queen after school. But now it's gonna be different. We’re all going to take off and try to make it on our own. Listen to this joke - letting graduation get to him after twelve years of being a hard guy. Oh, geez . . . Yea, it's time to make the scene in class . . . guess I might even miss that when it's over. Check ya later, buddy! Yeah, see ya, bye. SR. OFFICERS: Pres., Carolyn Harris; V.
