BARRON member of the Parkesburg Board of Education, beloved and respected member of our community, a man who was always a shining example of all that is good. CLASS HISTORY We, the Senior Class of 1956, wish to bring to you the story of our high school success. These memories will be held in the minds of our class members for years to come. When we were freshmen, trying to read our schedules was like trying to read Greek, but after several instructions from Mr. Minch we were soon able to translate it. Later we were assigned lockers which weren't the ones we wanted, but what could we do when we had last choice. Initiation day proved to be a lot of fun, especially for the upperclassmen. Duckling down to some of the hard- est subjects, such as algebra and science, was another difficult problem we had to overcome. At our first class meeting we elected these officers: president, Robert McComsey; vice-pres- ident, Judy Mclntire; secretary, Alice Joy Fisher; and treasurer, Joan McCarter. John Fore- man and Bob McComsey were chosen for the J. V. basketball squad. In September 1953, we once again returned to PHS, this time as sophomores. Our number was now decreased to 25. We felt as though we were more important now, but we were re- garded as last year's freshman. The class officers were: president, Robert McComsey; vice-president, Mary Jane Varnes; secretary, Judith Mclntire; and treasurer, Joan Millard. The following boys made the J. V. basketball squad: James Mann, and Bill Tennant. Sandra Skiles was chosen as cheerleader. The days before final exams found everyone studying, since we wanted to enter high school the next time as juniors. In September 1954, we came back to PHS for our third year of high school progress. Our number had decreased to twenty-two. We held our heads high that year, for we were now upper- classman and were regarded as such. Our class officers were: Judy Mclntire, president; Sandra Skiles, vice-president; Jean Wright, secretary; and Alice Joy Fisher, treasurer. Robert Nutter and Robert McComsey made the Varsity Basketball squad. James Mann and Bill Tennant were selected for the J. V. team. Cheerleaders were Jean Wright and Sandra Skiles. Planning bakes and dances to raise money for our Junior Prom proved to be more work than fun, but we enjoyed every minute of it. One special feature we had at our Prom was the crowning of a Queen to preside over the activities of the evening. Our theme was Moonlight and Roses and how hard we worked to make our one big event of the year a success. Final exams rolled around again and our only thought was to return again for our time (we hoped) as all-important seniors. September 1955, was an important time for twenty seniors. All through high school we waited to initiate the freshman, and now we had our chance. Chosen as class officers were: Robert McComsey, president; Judith Mclntire, vice-president; Joan Millard, secretary; and Alice Joy Fisher, treasurer. Members of the varsity basketball squad were; Bob McComsey, Jim Mann and Bill Tennant. Jean Wright and Sandra Skiles were cheerleaders. The Junior Prom was a success for the juniors and we were their honored guests. It seemed as though every time we turned around final exams were staring us in the face, and here they were again. Baccalaureate and Class Night soon followed. Then came graduation which we will always remember. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our names and fixed our seals, this thirty-lirst day of May, nineteen hundred and fifty-six. The Class of 1956 CLASS PROPHECY by Peggy Melrath The year is 1966. I am now head nurse at Tokyo Hospital in Japan. The other day when I was walking down the street in Tokyo I noticed a man in front of me, who was dressed in the uniform of an admiral of the United States Navy. I thought there was something familiar about him. Suddenly he turned around, and who was it but Bob McComsey. I shouted to him. He was as surprised to see me as I was to see him. We started talking and I found that he was in Japan for a secret conference. We talked for a while and then he saia that he had to leave. On my way back to the hospital I wondered what had happened to the other people who had graduated with me. I passed a news stand and heard a newsboy shouting that the Brooklyn Dodgers had again won the World Series. This was the fifth straight time since Jimmy Mann took over their manage- ment. I went over to the stand and bought the paper. It was the Parkesburg Post, which now had a world circulation of 100, 000, 000. This was understandable since Mary Jane Varnes was its editor. When I got home, I looked at the paper. One headline said, Local Boy Elected Head of G. E. Corporation. Reading on I found that the local boy was Lyle Gillespie, who always had been interested in electricity. Next, I looked at the society page. Here I read that Thaddeus Atkin, who was now the Spanish translator for the United Nations, was in Parkesburg for the class reunion. Alice Joy Fisher, the Steak Shop heiress, was also in town. She was now living in Florida. And Sandy Skiles, who now had a horse farm in Kentucky, was also visiting. In the literary column I saw that Jim Newswanger, the great author, had just written Shake- speare's Biography. I remember that he had always seemed interested in Shakespeare. We had another author in our class, Bob Cazillo, who had written How Many People Can You Fit into a Car Safely ? I continued reading until I saw that Joan Millard was giving this year's senior class their vocational aptitude tests. When we went to get ours, I had noticed that she seemed very inter- ested. Jack Wingert was a test driver for General Motors. He was always a good, safe driver. Jean Wright had just been voted The Prettiest Teacher in O. H. S. She taught history, because she had been such a good history pupil. I noticed an advertisement for Hanna's Garage. Of course it was Bob's. JoAnn Mummert had written to me the other day that she was Bob's secretary-bookeeper and his main source of entertainment. It seems he still came up to her house every night to watch television. Speaking of televisional saw Bill Tennant's and Virginia Gilmore's debate team on television the other night. They are now very famous and they have yet to lose a debate. With powers of argumentation like that, how could they lose ? Incidentally, their sponsor was Johnstone's Com- pany, Gerry Shultz vice-president. She had come a long way. Getting back to the newspaper, I noticed an interview by Doris Graham, who was now Mary Jane's right hand man. The person she interviewed had also been one of my classmates--Judy Mclntire, the world famed chiropractor. She says her reason for success is that she always keeps her hands warm. Well, I guess that takes care of everyone. Now I want to watch Bill and Ginny on television.
